I've posted before about girls names to go with our unhelpful surname Aldock (see -
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/a1912210-Unhelpful-surname-Chloe-or-Freya-or)
but now I need boys name suggestions please!

Again, we've had to rule quite a few we like out, eg. Jacob (Jaco Baldcock) and Aidan (which I just think doesn't sound right - and as I've said in my previous thread, I don't really like alliteration).

We like Isaac but it just wouldn't work - I's a coldcock or I suck old cock??????!!!

Though we think Zac is a possiblility - Does Zac Aldcock sound ok?

Please can you give us some suggestions (boys or girls) - it's driving me a little crazy!!!!! Thank you!

Hang on - why no F names? Freddy Aldcock is excellent!

Rooners · 25/01/2014 20:14

Emily is good for a girl. Emily Aldcock. It's lovely.

woodrunner · 25/01/2014 20:22

I'd go for a sensible classic name to counteract the humour.
James Aldcock
Henry Aldcock

I wouldn't go for Zac - it's like sack or suck neither of which you want to burden him with (lovely though the name is.)

If you want something a bit more flamboyant - how about Raphael or Florian, Elijah or Gabriel.

sleepingbeautiful · 25/01/2014 20:23

Sebastian
Nathaniel
Theodore
Thaddeus (Tad or Ted)
Xavier
Leonardo

CormoranStrike · 25/01/2014 20:39

Don't use Joby - sounds just like the word jobbie, ie a poo! Joby Alcock would be horrendous for a kid.

sleepingbeautiful · 25/01/2014 21:11

Jonathan

FootieOnTheTelly · 25/01/2014 21:30

It really isn't that bad Smile. I wouldn't have even noticed it as being potentially silly.

I once knew someone called Lawrence Daft. I thought the Lawrence really cancelled out the Daft IYSWIM

I would go with a normal boys name with a strong beginning and end. The longer the better.

Johnathon
Sebastian
Cameron
Duncan
Philip
Christian
Patrick
Daniel
Nathanial

(Sorry for random names...just trying to give an idea of the sound) Confused

Btw I don't see any reason to use a NN if you don't want to.

FootieOnTheTelly · 25/01/2014 21:38

Ohh! Your surname is Aldcock not Aldock which is what you typed in the first line of your OP ....mmm that does have a bit more 'silly' potential then Confused
It's still an ok name though.

Have you considered dropping the C or would it cause too much family upset or confusion?

ToffeeJungle · 26/01/2014 16:31

Yes sorry, it is Aldcock (know I made a typo in the OP) and no we won't be changing names / spelling / pronunciation!

Am not totally averse to F names but on a similar vein to a G name becoming Goldcock, F would mean Foldcock (ouch!).

I love Nathaniel, Theodore and Christian but can't use them.

OP posts:
Rosieliveson · 26/01/2014 23:14

Why can't you use those names?
I used to think it was odd to have more than one person of the same babe in a family but on totting up, I have an uncle and brother called Andy, 2 Uncles called Dave, 2 cousins and an uncle called Steve and two neices called Emily.

I guess it doesn't really matter. Besides, we aren't all together that much really Grin

ToffeeJungle · 27/01/2014 12:03

Those names have already been taken by family / friends. Though I do see what you're saying - there are 3 David's and 2 Steve's in our family!
It would be nice to have something different though.

What do people think to Leon Aldcock?

Def Jared out of your suggestions, how about Monty?

TorcBasilandLime · 27/01/2014 12:17

mount old cock. no to monty as well.

MY GOd op that is a terrible sur name to work with!

Would your h not allow the next generation to have your sur name? Is he desperate to carry it forward!

I know of a family of Hoares and they changed it.

ToffeeJungle · 27/01/2014 12:28

Ha, so no to Monty! (not keen on that anyway).
Though do still coming back to Jared...

I know, it is sooooo difficult! We will not be changing surnames though - we're married and I took it on and it is our family name and it's for keeps! Smile

Best avoid Dickon, I'd say.

ToffeeJungle · 27/01/2014 14:27

Dickon???? Is that even a real name???!!

Though yes we are obviously avoiding anything along the lines of Richard, William, Roger...

OP posts:
TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 27/01/2014 17:56

Yes it is. Can also be spelt Diccon. The only one I have come across is in the Monica Edwards books.

Locketjuice · 27/01/2014 18:02

Elijah Alcock sounds like u like your old cock.. But everyone keeps suggesting it Confused

Locketjuice · 27/01/2014 18:13

Finlay aldcock?
Freddie aldcock?
Franky aldcock?

Charlie/Charles aldcock?

Locketjuice · 27/01/2014 18:15

Theo? Theodore? Henry?

Yika · 27/01/2014 18:54

Jared is great.

Rory?
Jesse?
Bruce?
Nicholas?

I'm howling at Dickon Aldcock.

Twooter · 27/01/2014 20:39

Not Finlay please - thin old cock

ToffeeJungle · 28/01/2014 13:22

Rory - not keen
Bruce - BAldcock
Jesse - too feminine
Nicholas - quite like it

And agree,.no to Finlay!

Joseph, Leon and Shaun are current potentials - can anyone see any issues with these???

legoplayingmumsunite · 28/01/2014 13:29

I've said it before and I'll say it again. With a silly surname you need a classic mans name like John, Robert, William, James, etc. Although I do quite like Bartholomew Aldcock if it wasn't for the B initial. So maybe you have to either go mega boring or mega out there. How about the MN favourite Ptolemy Aldcock?

ToffeeJungle · 28/01/2014 13:38

Yeah Im not sure Willy Aldcock would cut it! Wink

Whereas Ptolemy....
