Amelia - how popular?

How many do you know? We've chosen this for dd2, love it, then discovered it's ranked no1 in the baby names list! We know one, she's 11.

Dd1 (3yo) has no Amelias at her nursery, ballet, gymnastics etc. I'm a primary school teacher and there are a few Amelies but I've not taught an Amelia.

How many do you know? Is it really that popular that they'll be loads in her class?!

In real life and through Facebook old contacts at least 10 under 18m as well as 2 Amelie, 1Amalie and all the may maya Mia names which are very common too. I wouldn't it is the new lily.

BunnyLebowski · 23/12/2013 17:35

Very very popular.

And very insipid.

Tea1Sugar · 23/12/2013 17:39

Insipid?! At what point of my OP did I ask for your opinion on the name?

I know 3 under 3, and also a few Emilias. But if you love the name, go for it.

GirlWithTheDirtyShirt · 23/12/2013 17:48

Just a couple of Emilia's round us. Know of no Amelia's under 8.

Bumblequeen · 23/12/2013 17:50

I know of one Amelia and one Emilia - both toddlers.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 23/12/2013 17:51

One FB friend's DD and one DD of a workmate. Both are about 8. Only one in DD's nursery of about 100 kids.

autumnmeg · 23/12/2013 17:54

There is one in my antenatal group age 2. Go with what you love!

Cheeriosfortotoro · 23/12/2013 17:54

I know 3 under five. But I love the name. If you love it use it!

FortyMerryFuckers · 23/12/2013 17:57

I love the name this is what DS was going to called if he was a girl but 8 years on I wouldn't use it as it's much too popular for me I know a few Amelia's babies & small toddlers.

hawkmcqueen · 23/12/2013 19:24

I realise it's number 1 but only know one in rl, she is 18 months.

MrsUnderwood · 23/12/2013 19:27

I know one Amelia who is 2, and an Amelie who is around 7 years old. It's a nice name!

lljkk · 23/12/2013 19:54

I find there are so many girl names that people like that you don't get heavy concentrations of them (not like recurring Jack-Thomas-William-Daniels-etc.). So I genuinely think an Amelia born today could be the only one in her class all the way to age 16.
But only one in the year group? Probably not. And many others to encounter along the way. Bit like Sarah, Julie, Emma born 30-45 yrs ago.
I know at least 4 Amelias & variants under 12.

And I don't like it either but you've banned us from saying that

YoSaffBridge · 23/12/2013 19:57

I know 3 Amelia's under two and one who's about 6, and also two Amelie's. It seems to be very popular around here. It is a nice name, though almost all of them that I know have become "Mia" because that's the way most toddlers can pronounce the name!

I agree that even popular girls names aren't as common as popular boys names, but then sometimes it's more obvious with a girl's name as boys names have been quite standard for a long time, while I've noticed that Amelia, Florence, Isabella etc have rocketed in popularity in the past few years. So they're more dateable than boys names, but that's probably always been true.

tulipsgirl77 · 23/12/2013 19:58

We have an Amelia. Now 19 months. No other Amelia's at nursery or any of the play groups she goes to. We were very confused when it was named as the most popular name. We named her because we absolutely loved the name (and my husband is a huge D Who fan - Amelia Pond) with what you like and forget other people's opinions!

soapnuts · 23/12/2013 20:00

Between Amelia, Amelie and a couple of odd spellings I know 12(!?!?) - all under the age of 5. Beautiful name but completely overused I'm afraid. I wouldn't use it

200Cigarettes · 23/12/2013 20:41

It does seem to be a very popular name I know of many, but if you love it, i wouldn't be you concerned about its popularity.

PolkaDotParty · 23/12/2013 21:01

Very popular. I know 1 7 yr old, 2 4 yr olds and about 3 under 1. Also know several Amelie's, I would be put off by its popularity.

tiamariaxxx · 23/12/2013 21:19

I have a friend whos dd is Amelia, also my OH has 2 little Amelias in his family. Ds1 who is 5 has 2 in his class and ds2 in nursry has an Amelia but think theres a couple who goto afternoon nursery

FrankelInFoal · 23/12/2013 21:21

There are 4 young girls (under 10) living in our 8 house cul-de-sac - 2 of them are called Amelia!

CarryOnDancing · 23/12/2013 21:26

I know 3 Amelia's, 1 Emelia and 2 Amelie's, all under 4.

Dollybird86 · 23/12/2013 21:30

I felt like this I love the name so much so I still named my dd it shes 7weeks I figure it will be like lauren when I was at school there was at least 3 of them but I can cope with that! If you love it use it!

Skogkat · 23/12/2013 22:24

I know 2- one is two months, one is three.

HaroldTheGoat · 23/12/2013 22:27

I think it's a really nice name, however it's all over here.

Really popular.

Haylebop12 · 23/12/2013 22:33

Mine is almost 5, only one in her year group.

I know about 3 aged 5 and under.
