Not coming up with names with agree on, and Persephone is a hard name to top!

So far we've got Serafina (altho not liking the nn of Sera/Sarah) and Anastasia.

Any other suggestions welcome

Seraphina was my first thought. Allegra, Evangeline, Cressida?

treaclesoda · 12/08/2013 07:17

I think I might be a peasant, but can someone explain how to pronounce Persephone?

And in the spirit of this discussion, may I just point out that I went to a very posh grammar school? Wink

As it happens, I love classical type names, I'm just not sure of the pronunciation of this one.

katydid02 · 12/08/2013 07:21

Florence.

Thea is a nice name. I went to school with a girl called Thea. The greek version is Theia.
Someone said Hera. Thats a nice one as well. I think the whole "Heaven and Hell" thing would be great.

NationMcKinley · 12/08/2013 07:31

Aurora? I love the name Persephone BTW - do I need to add schools etc? Grin

Thumbwitch · 12/08/2013 07:34

Just vaguely remembered that someone scoffed at the names Mercedes and Porsche as well - Mercedes were named after Mr Benz's daughter, Mercedes (it was a name before it was a car) and the Porsche was named after Mr Porsche, but is also a girls' name (sadly meaning pig, so not an ideal appellation!)

If you're going to scoff and sneer at people's name choices, it's probably a good idea to see where they come from first.

Thumbwitch · 12/08/2013 07:36

And that'll teach me to rely on memory - NOT Mr. Benz's daughter. Mr Emil Jellinek's daughter Mercedes. Sound principle, just inaccurate memory.Blush

treaclesoda · 12/08/2013 07:38

Thank you!

When I first read the thread I thought it was prounounced 'perse-phone' Blush and it wasn't until another poster mentioned pronunciation that I realised I'd got it all wrong. Correct pronunciation makes all the difference, its rather nice when said correctly. Strong but feminine.

My own favourite classical name is Xanthe, I went to school with a girl of this name and thought it was so coolto have a name starting with X. I still do, if I'm honest.

katydid02 · 12/08/2013 07:40

Xanthe is nice.
I have to ask, who knows whyI suggested Florence? :)

Skoggy · 12/08/2013 07:56

Is it to do with Florence meaning to flower and Persephone being the Goddess of Spring?

Oriunda · 12/08/2013 08:01

I have always loved Persephone (favourite Greek myth) and a DD would have had that name. Aurora is also great. Aurelia is also nice. Any of the other Greek goddess names would be fab though. Hebe and Cassandra in particular are lovely.

To be fair, none of us have any idea of the OP's background - for all you know, Hayley, she could be a Duchess or she could work down a coal mine. She could be Zara Phillips, or she could be Jordan. She likes the name Persephone - maybe likes its rhythm, cultural associations, nicknames, who bloody knows? And more to the point, who really cares? The thread is not called PLEASE JUDGE ME AND MY CHOICES.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but on a thread that's not asking for your opinion, why bother giving it? Everybody's names choices say something about them, and it is no less rude to judge people for "being posh" than it is for being (perceived as) lower-class, a la Katie Hopkins, for example.

OP, I think Serafina goes well with Persephone and agree it shortens nicely to Fi or Fina. Also what about like Jocelyn, Annabel, Corina, Anwen? Love Cordelia too but Cordy not a great nn, IMO.

Mendi · 12/08/2013 09:52

I wouldn't go with Demeter. She was Persephone's mother, so would be a bit odd to have sisters one with the name of the "mother" of the other.

How about keeping it on an Underworld theme and going with Eurydice?

aufaniae · 12/08/2013 10:23

To go onto someone's name thread and insult their existing child's name is pretty fucking low.

Hayley do you spend time in RL insulting children's names, or only when you can hide behind a screen?

FWIW we considered Persephone for DD and only didn't go for it as we know an adult Persephone quite well and it would have been a bit weird! Lovely name :)

Nyla · 12/08/2013 10:35

How about Isis? I know its not on the Greek theme but love that name. Sissy is a cute nn.

katydid02 · 12/08/2013 13:07

Florence Nightingale's sister was called Persephone. I know I'm sad very well educated Grin

katydid02 · 12/08/2013 13:10

If you want another Greek name, how about Melissa?

Persephone being the goddess of spring and Melissa meaning bee seems to make the two names work together.

night1971 · 12/08/2013 13:23

Florence Nightingale's sister was Parthenope. Similar to Persephone & easily mixed up.

night1971 · 12/08/2013 13:28

Persephone and Aminta
Persephone and Athena
Persephone and Artemis

Guess I have a thing for the letter A!
