Not coming up with names with agree on, and Persephone is a hard name to top!

So far we've got Serafina (altho not liking the nn of Sera/Sarah) and Anastasia.

Any other suggestions welcome

Zamfira?

LauraChant · 11/08/2013 22:58

Hayley you are entitled to your opinion. I just think a thread where someone has said what their daughter is called and asked what names go with that is perhaps not the place to express the opinion that that name, and similar ones, are pretentious and that people
choose them thinking they are posh, but they are not.

Just seems a tad rude.

Please stick to classical names! I have a friend who has two classically named children, and then a random not classically named one in the middle. Drives me spare!

Iphigenia? Although that does give you Iffy as a NN ;)

JugglingFromHereToThere · 11/08/2013 23:05

How about xanthe - meaning bright, yellow.

zippey · 11/08/2013 23:07

Most of these names are awful and a bit chavy. Like calling your child Porche or Mercedes or something.

I don't get the whole peasants thing but I'm with Hayley.

MikeOxard · 11/08/2013 23:09

Henrietta

Well that's simply charming. Mercedes is a lovely name, and if I could make everyone say it with a Spanish accent, I would definitely use it.

And surely chavvy takes a double v.

formicadinosaur · 11/08/2013 23:26

Theodora

ohforfoxsake · 11/08/2013 23:32

Otterley. (Or Otterly - not sure of the spelling).

Persephone and Otterley.

I think that works rather well.

Since when on a baby name thread did we have to start explaining where we went to school.

FYI - I went to my local comp. Not sure what this means for my earlier suggestions, but can only imagine it must mean I am a chav making chavvvy suggestions????? Grin

Secretswitch · 12/08/2013 03:23

Phoebe and Asteria. Both Goddesses. I knew a really lovely Penelope years ago.
Let us know what name you choose for your sweet baby :)

How about -
Charis (one of the graces)
Echo (maybe a long shot...)
Daphne
Theodosia (A Christian name of Greek origin, meaning God's gift)
Pernilla (Swedish but a lovely name with similar soft sound to Persephone imo)

Mendi · 12/08/2013 06:09

Are we all assuming there has to be an Ancient Greek theme then?

If so, can I suggest the lovely Helen? Going "stealth" on the "theme".

I did Ancient Greek at school/uni. Love love love lots of the Danes but have never forgotten the ghastly middle-class moment 10 years ago when I heard a mother shrieking across a packed park "Priam! PRIAM! Will you PLEASE stop doing that to Lysander??"

Little Priam was busy poking his brother Lysander in the eye. For some reason this very ordinary childhood behaviour was rendered ridiculous by the names. But I am sure they will make excellent politicians one day.

I meant love lots of the names of course. Not Danes. Though, some of them are quite nice too. Could go with a Scandi theme on the name for a change? Freya, for example?

NapaCab · 12/08/2013 06:24

Demeter would be the obvious choice.

If you're just going for a Greek theme in general however, my favorite name would be Hypatia, the name of a famous Greek (female) mathematician and Neoplatonist philosopher who lived in Alexandria.

If I had a daughter next time around I would love to go for Hypatia but I don't have the balls to name my child something that pretentious Grin. You sound like you already have the necessary cojones, OP, since you went with Persephone first time around so I invite you to use Hypatia!

(You're welcome)

SmallOrangeGiraffe · 12/08/2013 06:27

Wow!

Thank you for your useful suggestions everybody.

And to everyone else, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!

How utterly rude! And hurtful! I thought this was a nice friendly forum, please can you go and hijack someone else's thread if you have nothing better to do than slag off my daughters name! Yes, everyone is entitled to opinions, but at least have the willpower/common curtesy to keep them to yourself.

Again, thank you to everyone for your positive suggestions.

I think it should be a rule.

On requesting or suggesting a baby name you MUST declare the name of your parents schools, past and current partner's schools, your own and your siblings school(s). And, of course) the name of each if your existing children and any intended names.

Just so there can be no misunderstanding.

Thumbwitch · 12/08/2013 06:32

Love how the classical Greek names appear now to be "pretentious" Hmm

I like Ariadne. It's sadly under-used.

I wouldn't use Penelope though, as Penny can be a nn for both Penelope and Persephone.

Somethingyesterday · 12/08/2013 06:39

Partners' schools (but of course they might all have been to the same one....)

brightonbythesea · 12/08/2013 06:55

I met a beautiful lovely little girl called Cressida the other day. I think it goes nicely with persephone. laughing at the idoiotic subthread on here, what a waste of time. hope you find a name soon Smile
