Hi
I like the name Tabitha Jasmine but prefer the spelling Tabitha Jasmyn. Am I crazy? Honest opinions please....

Bun baker - Francis is 'ow you spell it for 'im
Frances is 'ow you spell it for 'er

That's how I remember

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 21/07/2013 08:36

I like Jasmyn, it's pretty. I love the name Jasmine, but I think Jasmyn is a prettier variant for sure. If it's her middle name, she won't need to spell it out much because, tbh, it won't be used much, and often you just need an initial or something. More and more names are spelt differently and Jasmine has many common variants- Jasmin for example, and I think Jasmyn is definitely a good one.

I prefer Jayne too- this is an accepted, widely recognised spelling variant of Jane and I think it looks prettier too.

fluffyraggies · 21/07/2013 09:15

OP, If i saw Jasmyn written down i would wonder if the pronounciation would be Jas meen. I'm wise enough now to know that if i'm thinking that then i won't be the only one.

My middle name is Jayne, and i often have to spell out the name as most people automatically do not include the 'y'. Therefore IMO you and subsequently the child itself will have to correct people/documents often.

None of the above matter if your heart is set on it - but if you're not sure i would go for the traditional spelling.

I love Tabitha though. (Have a thread at the mo myself with that name being discused. The Darcy one)

hermioneweasley · 21/07/2013 09:20

Tabitha is a cat's name.

Jasmyn will make people assume you are thick or illiterate.

A MN honest opinion!

Biscuitsneeded · 21/07/2013 13:03

Agree it is more chavvy than poncy.

JulesJules · 21/07/2013 13:18

Not poncey, just unnecessary and wrong.

Jasmine is a beautiful name.

StrawColoured · 21/07/2013 13:26

Agree with Hermione that Tabitha is a cat's name. Go the whole hog and call her Tabitha Whiskers. Or if you're into alternative spellings, Tabitha Whiskas.

scottishmummy · 21/07/2013 13:31

Tabitha whiskas,lol that's a priddy name

ArbitraryUsername · 21/07/2013 13:33

Jasmyn is only a recognised spelling on the Internet these days because so many people think they're all unique substituting ys for is. That and substituting ks for cs.

5madthings · 21/07/2013 13:47

Its a spelling I recognize but most spell it jasmine.

I guess its about like robin/Robyn I would use the y spelling of Robyn as I prefer it, ditto Dylan rather than Dillon.

My dd has a yn spelling instead of in or en but its a recognized spelling (same as a place name).

How long does a spelling have to be used to become a recognised spelling? Certainly if you Google jasmyn you get various baby name references so it seems to be a recognized spelling.

TallulahBetty · 21/07/2013 16:02

I hate alternative spellings. Jasmine is lovely as it is. I do not like Tabitha at all.

HappyMummyOfOne · 21/07/2013 16:08

I dont think its poncy to spell a name incorrectly, quite the opposite in fact. Teachers, professionals etc will all form opinions of you based on the spelling just as certain names conjour up a stereotype.

squoosh · 21/07/2013 16:29

Tabitha is a lovely name, who gives a fuck if someone's Granny once had a cat of the same name. Go to the park and every other fat Labrador is called Lucy/Molly/Alfie/Max.

Jasmyn does look silly though. Alternative spellings perplex me, the name sounds the same all you'd be doing is giving her a headache of 'no actually it's spelt.........'.

Tabitha Jane/Jayne flows better. Although to be honest middle names area bit of an irrelelvance and not worth stressing over.

RoadToTuapeka · 21/07/2013 20:38

Lovely name but rendered horrid by the spelling. Go with the correct spelling if you like the name, why spell a name oddly just for the sake of it?

JumpingJackSprat · 21/07/2013 20:46

I honestly woulnt pay too much attention op. if half of mumsnet had their way then all the kids would have dull overused names like charlotte. I have a name with two or three possible variations so i always have to spell it. guess what, it hasnt done any lasting harm. i think a few of the more aggressive posters must just be having a bad day.

scottishmummy · 21/07/2013 20:50

Well given she asked honest opinion please, and queried poncy or not
I'd say op had a fair idea response this would generate
On a mn thread people will tell you what they'd not say in real life.thats the ouch factor

lljkk · 21/07/2013 20:54

Honestly, who can remember the last time they ever spelled their middle name out for someone else? I bet never.

Just go with whatever spelling YOU like. Tonnes of folk won't like it, so what, who cares? Who cares. I don't know why Jasmine is thought of as the one and only valid spelling. Jasmin/Jasmyn/Jasmine is probably most common girl's name around here, and it's spelled every where you can think of. There is no set spelling in my mind, like Isobel-Isabelle-Isabel etc.

VisualiseAHorse · 21/07/2013 21:46

Jasmine.

Don't mess with spellings.

Maud2011 · 22/07/2013 14:39

More naff than poncy imo.

Jasmine is lovely.

Choccyhobnob · 22/07/2013 15:58

bunbaker "If it's Francis with an i then it's a guy, if it's with an e then it's a she!"

Back to OP. Not keen on Jasmyn but wouldn't have been quite so harsh as some others. Actually quite like Jasmin...... strike me down!

Choccyhobnob · 22/07/2013 15:59

Actually scrap that, now I've written it I prefer good old Jasmine (and my sister's favourite Disney princess when we were little hehe)

HorryIsUpduffed · 22/07/2013 16:23

Jasmine is a flower. Poppy, Holly, Lily, Rose, etc.

I don't really see any difference in prettiness except that spelling it like the flower evokes the flower, which is pretty. Spelling it another way is just about what the letters look like and the sounds sound like, surely?

maxslittlebrother · 22/07/2013 16:39

Jasmine - beautiful name as is.

The original Freakonomics book had some interesting stuff on the effect of a name. I also just found this (but haven't listened yet) www.freakonomics.com/2013/04/08/how-much-does-your-name-matter-a-new-freakonomics-radio-podcast/

JumpingJackSprat · 22/07/2013 18:14

Since when does the fact that this is an internet forum give people carte blanche to act like absolute dicks to someone who asked a reasonable question in a polite way?

lucybrad · 22/07/2013 19:51

Thanks for all replies - most appreciated. I have just checked and Tabitha is NOT in the top 40 girls Cats names. Phew!!
