Hi
I like the name Tabitha Jasmine but prefer the spelling Tabitha Jasmyn. Am I crazy? Honest opinions please....

Well why ask opinion if you know you'll ignore received answer?
I never queried my Dc names on mn as I don't care what people opinion is
If you ask fir honest opinion up you'll get it.so suck it up without too much protest

GertrudeMorel · 20/07/2013 23:08

Stupid made up spellings are déclassé in the extreme.

Not poncey to make up the spelling, just really naff.

JumpingJackSprat · 20/07/2013 23:11

I prefer jasmine but its your baby and only a middle name. I come across lots of creative spellings in my job such as Jazmyn... they seem to cope fine with adult life. i thought the thick/dyslexic comments was awful whichever lovely person came up with that.

birdofthenorth · 20/07/2013 23:12

Jasmine is lovely. I agree that Jasmyn is naff. Not poncey, the opposite in fact.

Love love love Tabitha though and it goes really well with Jasmine.

valiumredhead · 20/07/2013 23:17

Poncy.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/07/2013 23:21

Jasmyn just doesn't look as pretty as Jasmine. Somehow Jasmyn looks more masculine.

Confused. Not sure why. But it does.

wigglesrock · 20/07/2013 23:21

If it's a middle name, I wouldn't sweat the spelling too much. It's a recognised spelling even if MN don't recognise it Smile

lucybrad · 20/07/2013 23:23

'What do you want honest opinion or argument with posters'

Gosh that's a bit aggressive scottishmummy,

'Well why ask opinion if you know you'll ignore received answer?' - err when did I say that??

'If you ask fir honest opinion up you'll get it.so suck it up without too much protest' - and I was protesting when?? I was asking an honest question about 'Jayne' (much prettier than Jane imo)

I think you may be one of the reasons people stay off mumsnet Hmm

  • btw I don't like different spellings, but have seen examples of real life people with Jasmine spelt that way. My other children have names spelt in the usual way.

Presumably you want to garner opinion as opposed to ask in real life?
Now you have issue with replies and are quibbling detail. Why did you ask then?
I can't see why you Asked without ability to suck up answers

Ziggyzoom · 20/07/2013 23:27

Go 4 it. Itz lurvly Hun.

lucybrad · 20/07/2013 23:33

I have not had an issue with replies - I want honest opinion. Some people may know people with this spelling. I do have an issue with your aggressive responses scottishmummy. The majority of posters think its a silly idea - so I appreciate that.

I would go for Jasmine.

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 20/07/2013 23:36

I haven't met a Jasmyn and even if it is a recognised variant, it's not a common one so it will just mean your DD spelling out her middle name every time she has a conversation that requires it. Why do you like this spelling? Because it's different?

scottishmummy · 20/07/2013 23:38

cutting &pasting, petty.complaining about so called aggressive posts, whiny
I cannot see why you've gotten in such an indignant haze
You asked for honest opinions, you got them

lucybrad · 20/07/2013 23:42

Capital letters, spelling and punctuation. Maybe you had better spend more time on that, than having a go at people asking honest questions on mumsnet.

OP posts:
filee777 · 20/07/2013 23:45

Not as bad as Jazmin, which makes me think of Jizzum

But not as nice as Jasmine, which is just such a lovely name/spelling

scottishmummy · 20/07/2013 23:46

Is that your best riposte?you understand enough to be in an indignant froth
Given youre considering saddling kid with misspelt name I suggest you attend to your spelling
Just think a life of no,no it's j-a-s-m--y-n.now that's a spelling problem

PilgrimSoul · 20/07/2013 23:47

Poncy or acceptable to whom? You asked the MN jury, and they have have judged it unacceptable, or certainly unnecessary (I would add my voice to that).

You have made up your mind though, that it is acceptable to YOU. So I don't know why you asked on here.

scottishmummy · 20/07/2013 23:48

Indeed

YDdraigGoch · 20/07/2013 23:50

IMO, not poncy but chavvy.

wigglesrock · 20/07/2013 23:58

Really how many times do you spell your second name out? Mine is only used on 3 things I can think of and they were all written documentation in which I filled the details in.

I can think of a handful at most occasions where my childrens middle names have been asked for and again I've filled the form in, so obviously there's not been much spelling confusion.

scottishmummy · 21/07/2013 00:03

Frequency Depends if its an active middle name,or redundant not generally used
Nonetheless if the spelling is unusual it will. Still be queried

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 21/07/2013 00:08

wigglesrock I see your point, but then it's a pity that on all the (few) occasions when a person has to mention it, they'll have to correct the spelling of it. Doesn't reinforce a positive feeling about it for that person, surely!

ByTheWishingWell · 21/07/2013 00:11

I definitely prefer Jasmine- I hadn't realised Jasmyn was a recognised alternative spelling, and think it looks a bit unnecessary.

However, I agree with wiggles- I can't think of many occasions where you need to spell out your middle name. I fill mine in on forms occasionally and that's about it. So if you've got your heart set on Jasmyn, go for it, I really can't see it causing your DD any problems.

wigglesrock · 21/07/2013 00:15

Not if they're writing it down - filling a passport application in, applying for a driving license, opening a bank account - you type/write the details in, so if you don't make a mistake you'll be alright.

If you're going to use the middle name in every day then yes it would be an issue, but then in my mind that wouldn't be a middle name - it would be a hyphenated name and its much too late/early to open that can of worms.

I have a 2.5 year old - her middle name is Claire not Clare. She has a bank account, a passport, a Dr and has applied for a pre pre school - her name hasn't been spelled wrong or queried once.
