I know someone whose daughter and son are called Paris and Troy. Really! Aside from being utter rubbish, I mean, if we are going with mythology Paris is a boy not a girl, and Troy is a place not a person! Its Paris and Hector surely? Or Troy and Mesopotamia?

So can you top that? Go on, I could do with a laugh.

Prostitutes? Ew. I have a little niece called Scarlett.

That's certainly not what I think when I hear the name.

Little girls called Parris and Mercedes. Adorable girls, but I did wince inwardly.

I really like Kanye, don't see the problem it is not an unusual name that only 1 famous person in the world has.

I know a little Anakin too.

I have to say though, although you wince initially, whatever the name is it stops being daft once you get to know the child. Parris was such a sweet kid, I started to like it after a while.

Paris or Parris however you want to spell it is a very old classic name btw.

The only names on this thread that are awful is Chlamydia and the like. I don't really believe that someones actually called that though, sure it's a urban legend.

I used to know twins called Galen and Zalen.

I don't think that Scarlett, Lola and Jade mean 'prostitutes', actually.

Scarlett = 'scarlet, red'

Lola = 'strong woman' or 'sorrows'

Jade = 'a jewel'

Seems that some have both their judgey aaaaaand insulting pants on tonight ...

A bad-tempered or disreputable woman.

not being 'judgey' or insulting, just stating an opinion based on solid etymology.

PickledFanjoCat · 20/11/2012 19:45

I would never see a kid called jade and make that connection when there are other nicer ones though.

These are kids like! It's not nice.

Report
Frawli · 20/11/2012 19:45

Molotov, In older times, Jade was certainly a derogatory term for a woman, used something along the lines of 'slapper' today.

just looked it up 'A woman regarded as disreputable or shrewish'

However, it doesn't conjure up that thought for me, but I can understand where people are coming from when it does.

Report
MolotovCocktail · 20/11/2012 19:46

Yes, but those are the connotations for a scarlet woman. Not the name Scarlett ... sorry, I just don't understand your point well, I do, but its heavy-handed

InNeedOfBrandy · 20/11/2012 19:46

I would much prefer to name my dc Scarlett or Lolita then sarah for instance or olive or henrietta.
