Jura?

Just wondering what people think of Jura as a name for either boy or girl? Love the Scottish islands but Isla(y) is already popular and I'm not keen on Iona or Skye. I think of it as a boys name but DSis reckons ending in "a" makes it feminine...

Lovely island but ugly name

picnicbasketcase · 01/09/2012 12:48

Like Jura number one? Not sure about that, but I guess if it's a local name that people are familiar with it wouldn't sound odd.

coffeeinbed · 01/09/2012 12:55

No.
That's a coffee machine make.

coffeeinbed · 01/09/2012 12:56

There is a Russian name Yuri, which gets shortened to Yura.

Rollersara · 01/09/2012 12:56

Don't get Jura number one reference?

I think it's quite a pretty name!

Never heard of the coffee machine! That's my something learnt for the day :)

Durex

coffeeinbed · 01/09/2012 13:02

Also a mountain range in Europe.

Caerlaverock · 01/09/2012 13:05

How about ulva?

ExitStencilist · 01/09/2012 13:07

As in the whiskey? Confused

DowntonOut · 01/09/2012 13:07

Jura has always been a girl's name to me. I like it as such.

DowntonOut · 01/09/2012 13:11

Ahem, Whisky (with an e is Irish). Sorry, pedantic Scot here. Wink

The whiskies are just named after the place where they are made. It's still a beautiful island, and a great thing to name a child after. I'd avoid using Rum or Eigg though Grin

Rollersara · 01/09/2012 13:28

I did wonder about the Durex connection Narked!

I don't think the whisky is an issue, Islay is famous for whisky too!

Oh Jura is such a lovely place. Not 100% sure on its being name for a child. But it's not Eigg!! Grin

What about Iona or Skye?

jaffacakehips · 01/09/2012 13:35

Must learn to read OP's properly! BlushBlush

ExitStencilist · 01/09/2012 13:38

I am Irish, so its whiskey to me (Uisce beatha)

HotHotNot · 01/09/2012 13:51

Sula. Is an actual name as well. Maybe Ailsa? Boys- Harris, Arran, Lewis. Jura no. Juror/ juracell/ jurex or just Ju.

Rollersara · 01/09/2012 13:52

Yep, also avoiding Muck and Mull. Did wonder about Tiree...

Schmasch · 01/09/2012 13:53

It sounds daft to me. Anyone would think of the island or there'd be a lifetime of "Eh? Juror?". How about Scilly? Grin

DowntonOut · 01/09/2012 13:58

But if it comes from Jura, it's Scotch whisky Grin

Just a thought, OP, there are the Paps of Jura to consider... Wink

ENormaSnob · 01/09/2012 14:03

I've just been to the Jura region of France.

It was very nice.

LemonBreeland · 01/09/2012 14:23

I know a little boy called Jura. And before I knew him DH mentioned it as a possibility for one of ours.

I like it.

Puremince · 01/09/2012 14:45

I like it. There are plenty of Ionas, Skyes, and Islas out there, so why not a Jura? But I think it would work better as a middle name.

greenandcabbagelooking · 01/09/2012 15:06

Reminds me too much of dura - a membrane surrounding the brain.

Rollersara · 01/09/2012 16:34

We have an Arran in the family already, not keen on Lewis or Harris.

Oo, not heard of Sula, I like that! Thanks for all the comments everyone, much food for thought :)
