Jura?

Just wondering what people think of Jura as a name for either boy or girl? Love the Scottish islands but Isla(y) is already popular and I'm not keen on Iona or Skye. I think of it as a boys name but DSis reckons ending in "a" makes it feminine...

Whisky "region"? Love the idea of Islay being a region Wink They are neighbouring islands. Jura whisky is made on Jura. I'd see the concern if the OP wanted to call her kid , or even Bells.

GlaikitFizzog · 02/09/2012 09:41

Famous grouse, now there is an underused name!

I agree with downtonout scots roll our rs, where engelanders throw them away.

I wouldn't say the Jura was a brand name either. Jura whisky is from Jura.

DowntonOut · 02/09/2012 09:43

Laphroig disappeared from my last post. But I'm liking the sound of Famous Grouse. Would that be first and middle names, or hyphenated? Maybe Bruichladdich, nn laddie?

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 02/09/2012 09:44

When you talk about whiskies they are generally classed by region as Islay, Highlands, Speyside, Lowland, Campbeltown & the Islands.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 02/09/2012 09:46

GlaikitFizzog, maybe not a 'brand' as such but certainly something you'd see on a special offer label on a Tesco's aisle.

DowntonOut · 02/09/2012 09:49

Yes, Islay has eight distilleries and Jura only one. but from my experience, people in Scotland, would think of the island before the whisky. Loads of children take islands' names.

peanutMD · 02/09/2012 09:52

I live in the Highlands alongside Speyside whisky trail... I had no idea Jura was a place Blush

Although I am severely geographically unaware/challenged :o

We got home late last night from Tiree so I've looked out at Jura a few times over the last week. Beautiful islands.

Not sure about it as a name. It's pretty but I don't think I'd want the whisky connnection.

pixiestix · 02/09/2012 11:27

I had no idea about the whiskey or the coffee. My first thought was Jury service.... BUT I like it very much. It has a lovely sound to it. I would think of it as a feminine name because of the "a" ending but can see how it would be unisex.

Oban is great too.

Rollersara · 02/09/2012 12:27

Tiree the island is beautiful, we were there camping a few years ago, love it!

Hmm, don't think I'd get Famous Grouse past DP :)

I actually know an adult Talisker - I think it's quite cool! And a Kiloran, as well as several Islas. Jura I'd definitely think island, not whisky, and don't see why it wouldn't work as a name.

EllenParsons · 02/09/2012 23:59

I didn't get the whiskey thing, but Jura is a German word for Law, as in the subject, so that's what I think of and it doesn't seem like a name to me!

ThreeWheelsGood · 04/09/2012 20:54

Jura is the German word for law, which is why I clicked on this post thinking surely someone is not considering naming their child this! It's pronounced yura in German.

Disappearing · 04/09/2012 23:35

Harris would be a great boys island name.

greencolorpack · 04/09/2012 23:46

The Paps of Jura are a topographical feature that people in Argyll know about, two titty shaped mountains. Don't move Jura to a school in or around Argyll lest the sniggering starts. Might be okay in other parts of Britain.

StormGlass · 05/09/2012 07:37

Good point about the Paps of Jura, greencolorpack

When we were on holiday on Islay / Jura, every time we saw them, my immature DH would nudge me, say something along the lines of "Look! Titties!" and start sniggering Hmm I got sick of this very very quickly.

greencolorpack · 05/09/2012 07:39

I hear you Stormglass. Same experience with dh and friend on holiday. :).

Rollersara · 05/09/2012 08:02

See, it's taken me all this time until greencolorpack's post to realise what "paps" actually means Blush.

Note to self: do not mention to DP before next year's holiday to Islay.

Did you think I was just being a bit obscure about the Paps up thread? Grin

Rollersara · 05/09/2012 09:24

Yep, didn't get the connection! Blush Blush Blush

I though 'as in the island?'. Close to Jury.

Rollersara · 05/09/2012 09:25

For some reason I also had it in my head that there were 3 paps...

SleepyFergus · 05/09/2012 09:31

Jura is a brand named whisky - I used to work for the company that makes it. But it's prob overshadowed by the fact that it is from Jura. I like it, it's a bit different, although more suited to a dog or cat name of I'm being honest.

StormGlass · 05/09/2012 10:28

Yes, there are 3 paps on Jura. It's not an anatomically correct island Grin

chickenspots · 05/09/2012 13:58

I know a girl dog called Jura. I wouldn't call a son or daughter Jura and definitely not Oban!
