Jura?

Just wondering what people think of Jura as a name for either boy or girl? Love the Scottish islands but Isla(y) is already popular and I'm not keen on Iona or Skye. I think of it as a boys name but DSis reckons ending in "a" makes it feminine...

Its a Whisky.

How about Glenfiddich?
Or Aberfeldy?

Sorry just makes me think its equivalent of calling your child Chardonnay, Chianti or Merlot.

I know Scottish islands are in vogue as first names, Lewis/Harris/Isla/Barra/Skye/Iona etc. but my first thought when I see Jura is whiske/y.

squoosh · 01/09/2012 17:06

Lots of Scottish island inspiration here

Same as greenandcabbage said, reminds me of dura.

However dp has suspected problems with his and dd recently had meningitis so its probably just me having heard it a lot more than most recently!

I like Coll for a boy and thought about Tiree for a girl. Also Oban for a boy.

peanutMD · 01/09/2012 17:09

Mmmm... Had ordered a bottle of this from Santa... Then found out I was pregnant :(:o

Rollersara · 01/09/2012 17:19

Hmm. Liking Rona and Kerrera, thanks for the link Squoosh. And Oban. Coll is too close to Colin for me and also the name of the imaginary border collie that will one day be mine.

I don't drink whisk(e)y so I am surprised that so many make that connection, but not for Islay!

This was on my list of names too, but the coffee/whiskey reference put me off a bit ( although they are two things I used to enjoy very much! )

I'm not brave enough to name my child Jura, but I still love it as a name. X

DowntonOut · 01/09/2012 17:23

Rona is not unusual at all as a girl's name in Scotland (also Rhuna and Riona). Wouldn't use Oban, but i do have awful memories of working there Sad

mrscumberbatch · 01/09/2012 17:26

It's an island and a whisky.... not too keen.

For island names I prefer Ellis. (For a boy or a girl!)

OhDearNigel · 01/09/2012 17:28

Makes me think of vin de paille from the Jura region in France

YankeeAlphaBravoUniform · 01/09/2012 17:30

Skye and Ailsa are better

Lots of inspiration

I know a sula, she is lovely.

If you are I. Scotland I think Jura is fine. It's when you go outwith and people pronounce it differently you get the juror, durex pro lens.

I would go for it if you love it.

StormGlass · 01/09/2012 20:32

I quite like it, we've been to the island, so the name brings back happy holiday memories Smile

I think the 'a' ending makes it sound more feminine.

Yika · 01/09/2012 21:11

I like it, it's unusual without being odd. It also sounds strong.

Yika · 01/09/2012 21:12

Maybe because I'm thinking 'Jurassic' :)

Bongaloo · 01/09/2012 21:16

Is it pronounced the same as 'someone sitting on a jury'?

I did come across a girl called Talisker once.

mummabug · 01/09/2012 21:19

Jura, when spoken is it the same as 'Juror' - as in a member of the Jury? That's the first thing that popped into my head and I think is what picnicbasketcase meant by 'Jura number one'..

Other than that its nice.

Rollersara · 01/09/2012 21:24

Yes, it would be very similar to "juror"...

DowntonOut · 01/09/2012 21:24

In Scotland it would sound different, but then our Rs are more likely to be heard as we roll them.

Joor-ah for Jura
Joor-ur for juror

DowntonOut · 01/09/2012 21:26

Just made English DH say them, and they sounded the same. But not when I say them Smile

JennyPiccolo · 01/09/2012 21:30

Eilean?

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 02/09/2012 09:25

Talisker. Thats awful.

Jura is a brand name rather than Islay which is more a whisky region. Which is why I think its worse.
