A little boy at my DD's play group is called L'Ren.
For me any name that has to be justified/explained when you tell it to someone is a no no!

Spectra · 31/08/2012 00:25

After giving birth to my daughter, there was a woman a few beds down who had a girl named Satin Rose. That name will be forever burned into my brain because the woman said it every five seconds when talking to her baby....for the whole night...

Labyrinth. Armani (for a girl). Poor kids. There's also a mum near me who shouts "Destin-ah! destin-ah" all the time at her poor child. My friend nearly called her son Rocket, but fortunately changed her mind at the last minute.

Frontpaw · 31/08/2012 07:14

I just heard an Australian news presenter on the radio called Waynetta - sounded like Way-neeta.

JustSpiro · 31/08/2012 08:17

I read Satin Rose as Satan Rose Shock - poor kid!

I know a gorgeous little Theodore though, but have never made that connection - for me it's just one of Alvin's chipmunk friends Grin.

outtolunchagain · 31/08/2012 08:22

Snake , did you know that his brother is called Edward Bear , brave parents , one f them has a family law practice I think

Ham69 · 31/08/2012 08:30

Satin Rose Grin
Could have been worse Satin Shit

Frontpaw · 31/08/2012 08:42

I worked with an Edward Bear once. And yes, he did call himself Teddy. he was from Germany, so not sure if he was totally aware (at first anyway). He was not cuddly.

Margerykemp · 31/08/2012 08:58

I met a mum of a Saxon (g) but I actually quite like it!

JustSpiro · 31/08/2012 09:02

Margery - I know a boy Saxon! Don't think it's too bad as unusual names go.

IawnCont · 31/08/2012 09:08

Ooooh I never knew Melina meant runny poo. Blush I shall never be able to look at my grandmother's friend in the same way again...

Pleasenomorepeppa · 31/08/2012 09:29

It's def L'Ren. I asked how it was spelt!!

crackcrackcrak · 31/08/2012 09:39

Satin rose isn't that bad. At least it's real words/nouns. Also sounds like the mum put a lot of thought in to it Smile

gazzalw · 31/08/2012 09:57

SIL considered calling her son Roman but didn't, but she is a classicist so allowed methinks.

Isn't Mick Jagger's girlfriend called L'Ren?

What's wrong with Theodore????

Perhaps we need to opt for the French system where only certain names are allowed? Or at least, ensure that one of the given names (if they have more than one) is a 'proper' name!

Hate to say it but as a 'boss' if I am looking through CVs I will always be biased against people with 'silly' names. Know it's not their fault but really parents need to consider these things when they give their children ridiculous names.

goingtoofast · 31/08/2012 10:01

Angel
Bunni
Pebble (no s on the end) Elizabeth is her middle name just incase she doesn't want to use her first name - if you know it's embarrising why do it?!
Neveah - Heaven backwards
Amaryllis - when I heard it I thought it should be a pretty name but really didn't sound pretty.

susiedaisy · 31/08/2012 10:03

Isn't spike a nickname for William ?

goingtoofast · 31/08/2012 10:05

I also know a male Lauren as in Ralph Lauren, poor boy is often called the girls version of the name.

McKayz · 31/08/2012 10:10

Gazza, to me that is discrimination. You shouldn't be biased on names. If Pebble has a much better cv than Sarah then surely Pebble should get the job.

PatFigeon · 31/08/2012 10:10

I always liked Amaryllis. That skin care woman from the 90's called her daughter that.
I suppose she'd be late teens / early twenties now.

It's a good formal name for 'lily'

NotGeoffVader · 31/08/2012 10:10

Q'munity (girl) - gods help her when she has a chest to talk about
Bunnie-Love (unknown - on a CBEEBIES birthday card being waved about)
Ronnie-Lyn (girl) - spotted on fb via a friend of a friend

Polyethyl · 31/08/2012 10:15

My husband was in a supermarket, queuing to pay. In front of him were a pair of flustered parents and a bored little boy. The boy started to interfere with bagging up the shopping and the mother cried out in strident tones "Don't do that Valerian." The supermarket fell silent, then sniggered.

gazzalw · 31/08/2012 10:21

I meant it semi-lightheartedly but still - you are not telling me that you would not make automatic assumptions about a person with a ridiculous name as opposed to someone called 'Alice' or 'James' or their modern-day equivalents?

If their qualifications and experience were virtually identical, I would definitely go with those with more 'normal' names though.

I think these made up and 'off the radar' names are more acceptable in the US and think that a lot of this silliness about unique names has made its way over from across The Pond.....
