Just that really. I'm pregnant with dc2 and I love lots of names but wouldn't have the guts to use some of them - silly I know!!!

One of my faves for a girl is Luna/Lunar.

Just for fun- what are yours?

Cleopatra, Nemesis, Icarus, Io, Narcissus, Medusa, Tarzan, Calypso, Andromeda, Perseus, Pocahontas, Morning Star, Bounding Elk, Hawkeye Grin

I really, really wanted Rafferty, but DH vetoed, saying it was a name for a cat, not a child. He vetoed Gabriel as well, on the grounds that we couldn't guarantee he'd suit a name like that. Apparently you'd need to be cool, or you'd get eaten alive in adolescence over it. Hmm

I liked Lavinia as well. Again vetoed, though I'd have been allowed Violet or Tabitha.

My older sister always, always wated to call her DS Tiger, and her DD Tallulah but was pressured into talked out of using them for fear they were 'too big' a name for a child to live up to. It remains her single greatest regret of motherhood as her DS (now 13) and DD (now 11) have both grown up into the embodiment of those names, even using them as nicknames since they found out they were potential christian names for themselves.

Because of that, when I was pregnant with my second DS and struggling to find an 'acceptable' name as nothing was as good as my much loved 'out-there' name choice, she advised me to have the courage to go with my heart and let my son grow into his name and make it his. Best bit of advice I ever listened to about naming a child.
I am now very gratefully the mother of Harley Phoenix, and he is every bit as special as his name suggests Grin. Have courage peoples- your children will be fabulous enough to pull off any of these names!!!

I work in the NHS, and come across all sorts of weird and wacky names; most recently twin girls named Stella and Starr Hmm and another girl called Anemone.

I think it is cruel to saddle a child with an off-the-wall name - just my view. Also names that are cute at 3, but an embarrassing pain in the neck aged 30.

PostmanPatsBlackandWhiteCat · 27/08/2012 12:00

Charon for a boy and serenity for a girl I just think they are a bit too unusual.

perfectstorm · 27/08/2012 12:01

Anemone isn't that bad - I was at school with a girl called Amaryllis. Grin

perfectstorm · 27/08/2012 12:03

Do agree some names are insane, though. I have no issue with the Oliver family, but it's horrible to give your children legal names like theirs. Petal Blossom Rainbow? What the hell were they thinking? Nickname, lovely. But how is a 45 year old with a good career going to like being called that? "Petal Oliver"? Seriously, nothing at all wrong with all the family calling her it, but everything with forcing it on her as a legal moniker.

DizzyPurple · 27/08/2012 12:10

I love Aurelia too. Tempted if we have another but dont think DH would go for it.

Also Josephina

JugglingWithFiveRings · 27/08/2012 12:13

Peregrine !

  • ooh, I see someone else thinks the same Smile
theQuibbler · 27/08/2012 12:28

I wanted Inigo for DS1 but was lol no'ed by DH. Once the pregnancy hormones dissipated, I could see why. The names I loved were Jeremiah (Jem) and Aurélien but couldn't use them because Jem doesn't make sense in French (French DH) and Aurélien is hard to pronounce for English tongues and we're in the UK. So the boys have got one each as a middle name instead.

JugglingWithFiveRings · 27/08/2012 12:33

My DD has "Ursula" as her middle name, suggested by DH. I was a bit Hmm at first, but let him have it - it does mean "little bear" and has star connotations, and the St. Ursula nuns were a teaching order from what I understand, which runs in the family. So lots of things good about it - and she seems fine about it which is the main thing !

perfectstorm · 27/08/2012 13:18

I love Inigo too. Not realistic, but gorgeous. Also Aurelia.

imustbepatient · 27/08/2012 13:18

Portia and Cassandra for a girl, Hector or Gabriel for a boy. Love them all! Currently trying to choose name for DD2 arriving in October and sooo drawn to Portia!

perfectstorm · 27/08/2012 13:18

Oh, and Sorrel! It's a herb, though - worryingly close to Apple territory, perhaps? Having said that, so is Saffron and that hasn't stopped many!

rainonmyparade · 27/08/2012 13:21

I love India. I know it's not too 'out there' - but people would be a bit Hmm where I live.

I really love the name Myra. I just think it sounds lovely but wouldn't want to use it due to the negative associations. Shame.

Hotcoffeeisamemory · 27/08/2012 13:26

I love the name Amos. Love it.
Will not be having any more children though.
Both my boys names are extremely popular. We had no idea of popularity when they were chosen though.
Suspect my daughters name is thought of as common (chavvy?) though sadly.

Hotcoffeeisamemory · 27/08/2012 13:27

Oh I also love Elsie and Arthur.
