I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 11/07/2012 16:41

mypetmoster you have great taste, my DDs name is on your list!

Craftymoo · 11/07/2012 22:29

I like this thread!

My name is Craftymoo and I have a K name; it was unusual 36 years ago - until a small Australian started singing as a spin off from her soap opera! DH also has a "chavy" name, but not with a "K". FWIW, we met at Cambridge University....and DS has a very safe, biblical name - I hate the idea that he would be teased as much as I was, I hated my name for years.

VolAuVent · 11/07/2012 22:30

Kambridge?

Craftymoo · 11/07/2012 22:32

yes, probably! Grin

schplappo · 12/07/2012 20:13

I'll join. My name is schplappo. In RL, my middle name is French, but with the misfortune to look exactly like a v old fashioned English man's name. No one in my family is from France...

My DD's first name was roundly disliked on names forum. We added an extra "te" to her second name, giving it a French spelling and her third name is in the top 10.

I think she, and her names, are the best thing ever.

Mirage · 12/07/2012 21:10

My name begins with a K .DD1's name is classed as too popular but we have only met one other child with it. DD2's name is also 'too popular' or 'boring',but we've never met another one.Not living in London might have something to do with it though.Grin

DD1's middle name is Eden, glad to see she is in good company.Wink

nocluenoclueatall · 12/07/2012 21:51

I'm in. My name is Noclue and I have the most boringly biblical 70's girls name in the world and I love it. DH has an equally common biblical name and I love that too and guess what... I gave DS a boring biblical name, which was as unoriginal as my own. Not only do I love it, but so does everyone else apparently. Several friends with more funkily named children claim to be cross that they hadn't thought of it before I did clearly they hadn't watched Star Was as many times as I have

I'm so unoriginal, I even gave my precious only child DH's middle name, which was also the middle name of both his grandfathers as well. I absolutely love that one too.

I feel no need to express "originality" when it comes to naming children... SO SUE ME.

PrettyInDecadence · 12/07/2012 22:09

Eden is a really fab name, sadly no convincing DH to budge on our chosen girl's name :(

bexibean · 12/07/2012 22:40

I gave my sweet boy a name that rhymes with a (slightly) more popular name, AND I live in South (Sowff) London and the name has a 'th' in it...

all4u · 12/07/2012 23:02

Love this thread! I have a DS called Huw (Hugh in Welsh pronounced the same)and my husband's name was Smith so we put our surnames together without a hyphen (which I'm told denotes illegitimacy in the upper classes!) so we have lots of fun! I once brightly informed a new acquaintance that his name 'Vaughan' means small in Welsh - and promptly wished the ground could swallow me up (he was quite tall so I had thought it would be OK. . . )Blush
I never comment on names except en famille and my two are totally discreet!

leguminous · 12/07/2012 23:19

I'm an early 80s Sarah and my daughter has an equally top-100, classic, boring-as-fuck name, and will doubtless be one of ten in her class alone. I love it.

She also has two middle names, both of which are old-lady in a very untrendy way - because she was named for two old ladies: her grandmother, who died some years ago, and her great-grandmother who died a week after I called to tell her I was pregnant.

For next one am thinking Rose for a girl and Robin or Michael for a boy.

TroLoLoLo · 12/07/2012 23:30

Great thread.
I just searched my own name on MN to find that it is frilly , unpronounceable but quite well liked. Unfortuanatly someone thinks it sounds like a make of coil and someone thinks it sounds like an icecream van Confused. you will never guess it so don't even try Grin
As for my own DC's names, they all fall into the ridiculously common camp so I am definitly eligible to Join the baby name mutiny. We lived abroad and out of several large school my DS was the only George in the school but when we moved back to the UK there were four George's in his class.
very confident that I haven't outed myself with that seeing as at least a third of the Mums on MN probably have a George of their own

amck5700 · 12/07/2012 23:38

Minerva??

Lannie33 · 13/07/2012 04:08

MrsRhett i love the name Kaiya and would have named DD1 that if one of my best friends hadn't used it first and if I could've convinced DH that it doesn't rhyme with our surname (our surname sounds like RYE-o).
I have committed so many crimes against humanity with DS and DD...too many to list. And am expecting DD2 and planning to name her a K name.

bunnygirl80 · 13/07/2012 04:20

My name is bunny and my DS's first name has been the number 1 boys name in New South Wales (where we live!) for about the last 4 years. He also has two middle names, one of which is Scottish, despite us having no Scottish heritage whatsoever.

I blame my mum and MIL for the middle name sins I committed. It's tradition on my side of the family to give the father's first name as middle name to first born son, and the Scottish name is DH's name. Two middle names is my MIL's tradition, and I decided to continue it, despite DH's protestations that it's annoying having a name that is too long to fit in the boxes on forms.

Thumbwitch · 13/07/2012 04:25

Is it Bunny? I did not know that! I'm actually quite surprised as well, I think it's one of the few names I don't know one of around here! (different class of NSW types, obviously Grin)

TapirBackRider · 13/07/2012 04:45

My name is Tapir, and both of my dcs have alliterative names. Dd's forename is quite low down on the popularity charts, but ds's name is in the top ten.

Well, we like them! Grin

YodasMummy · 13/07/2012 07:36

My name is YodasMummy and my DD's name has been described on here as the following: posh, plain, soft, jolly hockeysticks, horsey, beautiful and classic.

As long as you love your own baby's name, who cares what certain anonymous MN snobs think? :-)

treyterson · 13/07/2012 09:00

As the child of foreigners my brothers and I grew up with names that were made ordinary by the locals. I ended up being called Tracy by them and it stuck. My beloved dd1 is called a beautiful lyrical name that was ruined by the Twilight saga, which she hates as common place, dd2 has a strong regal name that is shortened to a nickname by choice as she hates having to explain it her full name. Middle names are kept private as they show the foreigness of the family. I sign emails and letters with intials in an attempt to stay unidentified even now..T

bunnygirl80 · 13/07/2012 12:20

Really thumb?! If I shout his name in the park round here at least 2 or 3 other boys will look up. Despite it being an extremely common and boring name, one of the mums at his daycare manages to mispronounce it Confused

Thumbwitch · 13/07/2012 12:24

Must be cos you is in the city, innit, Bunny, whereas I is in the sticks. Grin
Top name round here is definitely Jayden or similar; not a one with your DS's name. :)

hubbahubster · 13/07/2012 14:47

My name's Hubba and I don't give a rat's arse whether my DCs' names would pass the high court judge test. Frankly, I can't think of a more tedious profession anyway and I hope they'll all be super creative instead.

And DS's name starts with Z. So ner.

Love this thread!

hypoxia · 13/07/2012 14:49

Love this thread! I think most MN naysayers would be polite in real life, they're just being anonymous keyboard warriors (I know I am sometimes). Also I think posts in the babynames threads can be brutally honest and maybe that's what some members need before they name their child something they might regret.

Anyway, my name is hypoxia, and I have two children with 'ordinary' first names and ridiculous middle names, one of them has a middle name which me and DH thought up as part of a bet, and the other has a middle name which I've always loved but wouldn't ever give a child as a first name.

And I have a gorgeous nephew with the chavviest name EVER!

hubbahubster · 13/07/2012 14:54

Oh BTW, I know very successful lawyer called Aimee. Just saying.

Jins · 13/07/2012 14:59

maybe that's what some members need before they name their child something they might regret.

I see the opposite more often. Someone will ask about George or Thomas and be told to go for Sebastian or Caspian instead. Nothing wrong with any of the names but there's an agenda being pushed that takes no account of the sort of thing the OP is after.

Also there are some very amusing spellings of more unusual names
