I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

Kailum doesn't get many compliments and some distant family members refuse to use his name and say Callum instead!

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 10/07/2012 20:51

My DDs name is very popular for cats & dogs.

My DSs middle name is after a sportsman who did well the year he was born. YES, yes it REALLY is. Oh, also his first name is Jewish, and we are extremely Gentile.

shouldbedoingtheironing · 10/07/2012 20:51

I like this thread Grin

I have an 'overused' name and have a son with a girls name in France which apparently I 'should' be worried about because this will be hugely confusing for him should he decide to swim across the channel and live there (but I'm not worried about it and I love it!).

OhTinky · 10/07/2012 20:57

My name is ohtinky and I did not know about Mumsnet when I was choosing my DDs name. So, having not consulted the "official" Baby Name thread/bible, I gave DD a name which can be spelled a number of ways and is frightfully popular (apparently), though I've never met another.

It's not a K name though Wink

Pochemuchka · 10/07/2012 21:05

Ooh, when are you due PrettyinDecadence? I'd love to know what you call him!
Kairon came from Kai actually as it was too short to go with the surname and I knew someone who had not long had a DS called Kai.
I really like Jacobi! I like that it's traditional with a modern twist.
I'm currently toying with names for DC3 and have come up with Nerina for a girl so far (is that high on the 'chavometer'?! Or should I go for Kerina instead? Grin )

Have looked at the lists I made 2 days before DS was born and I think my hormones must've been running riot!

PrettyInDecadence · 10/07/2012 21:09

Due in three weeks, however I'm not holding out much hope of the baby arriving soon as DS had to be induced. It's a real battle between my and DH at the moment - I really want Kai but he's set on Jacobi. We have decided that a DD will be Romany, though.

Nerina is really lovely, you may well have saved your DC2 from a life of menial work :o

Pochemuchka · 10/07/2012 21:09

SPsfanjo - argh at the 'Callum' ignoramuses!

The ILs kept trying to refer to Kairon as 'Kai' for ages after he was born because it is a more 'normal' name according to them and it is what we were considering before he was born but it just doesn't suit him so they've had to relent and call him by his full name.

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 21:13

There's no such thing as normal. I bet when John was used for the first time people were shocked!

The callum thing does my head in as its completely different to his name

Pochemuchka · 10/07/2012 21:16

PrettyinDecadence - Romany is lovely!
I think both your DS name choices are great although you should get the final say as you've done/will do all the hard work

I'm really stuck for boy's names this time but luckily I have a good few months more to think about it!

Pochemuchka · 10/07/2012 21:19

SPsfanjo - we have the same with 'kieron/kiaron'
I could forgive someone who is dyslexic getting it muddled up but anyone else is just being lazy.

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 21:49

Kailum won't answer to anything but his name yet distant relatives when they do their yearly 5 minute visit get annoyed with because he doesn't speak to them.

I tried explaing its because Callum isn't his name so he won't answer to it. Instead they make out like he is ignoring them.

Moominsarescary · 10/07/2012 21:53

My real name is kara

My 17 year olds name is Connor, a name that teachers on mn always say are badly behaved, chavvy etc

Ds2 has an American name

Ds3 has a nn on his bc

Ds4 is named after the wolf in twilight ( no he isn't the name is found in the bible)

BellaOfTheBalls · 10/07/2012 21:56

moomin I think your DS4 and my DS1 may have the same name. Grin

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 21:58

Moomin least its not Konner Grin

Moominsarescary · 10/07/2012 22:15

When I named him Connor I didn't know anyone by that name, except that highlander bloke.

He's never had another connor in the same year as him although ds2 is 8 years younger and there's a few his age

Moominsarescary · 10/07/2012 22:16

Ds2 wants to be a doctor, I haven't had the heart to tell him mm says he doesn't have the right name

Moominsarescary · 10/07/2012 22:17

My name is Headfairy and both my dcs have poncey forrin names despite being born in the UK.

LemonEmmaP · 10/07/2012 22:29

I think I have found my spiritual home. DS1 has an Irish name but we don't pronounce it properly (much to the amusement of my Irish MIL). DS2 has a nickname on his birth certificate and will apparently never be taken seriously. I'm a name rebel and I don't care!

Booette · 10/07/2012 22:38

My name is Booette and I have a Jayden, which as far as I can tell seems to be the most hated name on mn! I really should tell him that there's no point being top in Science (stealth boast) as it's not going to get him anywhere due to his cursed name, and the poor boy also has 2 middle names.

I also have Kyle, the dreaded K name and often on lists of naughtiest boys names. His teachers assure me he is the sweetest boy ever and they adore him! I will make sure he lives up to his name from now on!

I have 3 other boys, 2 have biblical (mainly Jewish) names, despite us being atheist, and DS5 has a dog/dinosaur name.

Jins · 10/07/2012 22:39

My real name is quite popular now and keeps turning up in the lists of suggestions. The shortened version of it is definitely in the top 5 girls names and I don't see any sign of its popularity decreasing.

It is however the vilest old lady name and I suffered miserably with it i deed polled it to the simplest name you can imagine at the earliest opportunity. It's a family name. It caused drama on a scale you can't imagine but at least it's not my name any more. When I see it mentioned I think 'Poor little girl' Sad

I therefore chose the safest names I could for my DSs. I don't care if they are popular or boring. At least they won't suffer like I did

PrettyInDecadence · 10/07/2012 22:41

I'm intrigued as to what is counted as a dinosaur name?!

Booette · 10/07/2012 22:43

Barney the purple dinosaur (which I've never actually watched)
