I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

re-googling my DDs full name last night, it now does bring up one other - who looks like she maybe an oriental hooker - odd as its not the same surname though - previously it only ever brought up sites DDs connected with such as her pinterest - googli

Others are outing, so I will too - my DDs full name is EdenRose, she goes by Eden after deciding at about 3 that she preferred that to Edie - Eden actually comes up well on here - weirdly suits DD too as its all arty jobs for the future & she IS extremely creativeShock

must go check my own full name on here nowGrin

Jins · 11/07/2012 09:57

I advanced searched my vile real name in this topic and it came up as a suggestion over 300 times. Even worse people have actually used it in the last year or so Shock

How come it was so bloody funny when we were all younger yet you're using it for your daughters One of my biggest tormentors has a daughter with that name

rockinhippy · 11/07/2012 10:01

My own name has been added by MN HQ, but no comments/opinions Grin

@Jins well that just proves that jealousy was her motivation ao you really can have the last laughGrin

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 11/07/2012 10:01

I'm Lurking and I'm very interested that names considered 'chavvy' in Britain are considered 'classy' in Australia! Grin

EG: Liam.

Interesting on the K name thing! Never heard that before. I have a name that starts with K.

Jins · 11/07/2012 10:03

@rockinhippy Maybe I should call her daughter some of her more revolting name related taunts

320 references for it's alternate incorrect spelling as well.

boschy · 11/07/2012 10:05

haha just googled my rl name and apparently its ponce-tastic!!! :o

Jins · 11/07/2012 10:05

My original real full name turns up 35 times and is generally liked.

Must hide topic. Have nothing in common with majority of posters Grin

olivestree · 11/07/2012 10:06

Both me and DH have names that begin with K. Blush

I swear we are not chavs.

We gave our daughter a really posh old English name (after her great great grandmother) with an equally florally nickname to prove it.

PrettyInDecadence · 11/07/2012 10:06

After a MN search, DS has a "pick on name" and the OP was advised never to visit Scotland if she named her son DS's name! When put up against Monty, the majority of posters preferred Monty to DS's name.

Mind you, we obviously don't have great taste in names as one of the names we're shortlisted for the next DC a poster "wouldn't saddle a child with" and it was described as "a tad chavvy". Mind you, it's better than the other name we like, which has received comments such as "today's Keiths are now named it", "it's nasty and rough" and "it always makes (one) think of head to toe Burberry chavdom". Nice.

spiderlight · 11/07/2012 10:08

My DS has the less-common spelling of a very uncommon Welsh name (and we live in Wales and have only ever met one other). Only two posters other than me have ever mentioned it, according to a search, and one of those was to say that it reminded them of 'that terrible albino looking chap who is a singer' (who came on the scene a year after we named DS). But I love it, he loves it and the X-Factor comments will die down eventually. And the first three hits on Google are for a novelist and two different professors, which is cheering! :o

Janoschi · 11/07/2012 11:04

Not sure why I decided to trawl Munsnet reviews of Robin. Morbid curiosity? It fares sort of okay, 50/50 for and against, though is branded 'horrid' by one poster. Seems a tad harsh for a simple nature name but there we go!

Almost everyone tried to talk me out of Deborah as a middle name. Deb and Debby triggered waves of revulsion. It didn't seem relevant to them that the name had been used for every eldest daughter on my mothers side for over 150 years. Nope, it's all about the possibility of being branded 'Deb'. As if anyone ever uses middle names anyway, let alone enough to shorten one!

rockinhippy · 11/07/2012 11:11

Why do I now have the overwhelming urge to go through all the all the "High Court Judge" names & rebalance them by adding something more lowly Grin

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 11/07/2012 11:28

Judge dredd?

PercyFilth · 11/07/2012 12:08

"Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling)"

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but poor Condoleezza (sic) is not a victim of made-up spelling, but of an unfortunate misunderstanding.

The inspiration was the Italian phrase "con dolcezza" meaning "with sweetness". Sadly someone misread the c for an e. Very doubtful that they they would have got the pronunciation right anyway! Hmm

AfternoonDelight · 11/07/2012 12:14

My name is AfternoonDelight and my DC have boring names.

Am I the only one who gets happy when the DC's names are up there on the most popular names lists? After living with people who can't spell my name (even though it's fairly common), I love the idea of people being able to spell my DC's name first try.

Never really got the whole, "there were only 2 other people with the same name as my DC, brilliant!" attitude.

MrsRhettButler · 11/07/2012 12:29

I'd like to post a complaint to the entire thread please:

Where the feck were all you lot a year ago when I was trying out names for dd2? It would have been nice to have someone say "actually, I think Desiree is a beautiful name and you can spell it how you like" (not that xdp would have gone for it but still) a show of solidarity would have been nice.
For the record I think one poster liked it but that wasn't enough!

kissyfur · 11/07/2012 12:51

Great post op!

My real name begins with a K!? Just googled my DDs name and apparently it's "too zeitgeisty" and "insipid" not that I'm fussed as I love her name. Don't think people should be so harsh in their views about other people name choices. One love people Wink

stleger · 11/07/2012 13:11

I want to claim points for my dd2 having a 15 year old boyfriend named Keith. As I am in Ireland, he is mostly called 'Keet'.

MyPetMonsterAndMe · 11/07/2012 13:49

My name is MyPetMonster and, although I don't have any chidren, I like surnames as first names. Especially for girls Shock. I'm in Canada and I know little girls named Avery, Harper, Sawyer, Addison, Kinsley and Hunter. I love it!

amck5700 · 11/07/2012 13:52

stleger - only get bonus points if your daughter has a strippers name and 12 or younger :)

5madthings · 11/07/2012 14:09

mypetmonster i wanted Addison as a name for my dd, but dp vetoed it.

rockinhippy one of my dd's middle names is Eden, i really like it and i considered rose as a middle name as well!

we also liked Robin and Casey as girls names.

LoveAndSqualor · 11/07/2012 14:24

Lordy. DS has a K name Kit, and I used the nickname on his birth certificate precisely because I didn't want him rebelling when he was older and using the longer version, which I'm unfussed by christopher. AND he has two middle names. Worse yet, I'd no idea any of this was not done. Much to learn, people; much to learn.

alicethehorse · 11/07/2012 14:38

Kit is lovely :)

And I don't think it falls into the category of K names, does it?
I thought the K names were things like Kristopher and Kai (which was on my list incidentally)

stleger · 11/07/2012 15:34

I think I can have bonus points for Keith as my dd has a name which means people will call her Chlamydia, according to some experts Shock

amck5700 · 11/07/2012 15:39

yeah, way to go st leger!!

I had quite a nasty set of posts on a thread about my son's name and mentioned that in the news at the time there was the big story about internet trolling and that the websites would be required to release the names/id's of the culprits when required - I think there are a few posters on baby names that should keep that in mind!
