Which Name do you Hate Most?

I hate the name Jane; I'm not saying it's the ugliest name in the world, by a long way (that's probably Griselda), but because of associations. Firstly, it was the name of the most horrible bully at my secondary school; and now, also, there's the Inbetweeners movie, in which the gorgeous Jay gets paired up with a fat plain Jane who is not cute enough for him!

Mind you I am VERY glad there is not a Kirsty Kardashian

yellowraincoat · 01/07/2012 01:41

I am not a fan of the twee old lady names that are fashionable at the moment.

Or the over the top stuff, Persephone and stuff like that.

People obsessing over nicknames - oh I'll call her Olivia, nickname Liv. I find it very odd and self-obsessed.

English people calling their kids after their Irish/Scottish roots, so mega-patronising, I don't see any Scottish people saying "oh his great-grandad came from Croydon so we're gonna call him Dave".

I like a solid normal name. Stephen, John, Edward, Alan, David, Catherine, Victoria, Jane.

yellowraincoat · 01/07/2012 01:49

I agree with the poster up-thread about not carrying your parents stuff with you. I hate all this "I named him after a character in my favourite book". It seems self-indulgent to me.

mumnosbest · 01/07/2012 02:07

I realy dont like mis-spelt names or celeb names, like everyone calling babies brittany or justin. Also names that aren't names: sky, summer, angel

ComposHat · 01/07/2012 02:11

Jayden, Jordan, Jake (least favourite in that order)

mumnosbest · 01/07/2012 02:35

Oh yes also dont like hyphenated names lisa-marie, john-paul or 2names to makw 1, eg emma-leigh, leigh-anne. I once taught twins ajay (AJ) and casey (KC) but that beat Bacardi,Tia( middle name Maria) and jack(middle name daniel). I kid you not!

mumnosbest · 01/07/2012 02:39

Have i managed to offend eveyones choices yet? No? How about places of conception? Paris, Rome.
Its a miracle my dcs were ever named :)

whatlauradid · 01/07/2012 13:22

Tilly, Milly, Molly, Lexi, Katie, Kirsty....I dislike most names with an 'ee' sound at the end.

diavlo · 01/07/2012 17:24

Lauren...it's just so dull. Ditto Alex and Nathan for boys!

FateLovesTheFearless · 01/07/2012 17:32

One of my dc names is on here, I am hunting down the poster Angry Grin

Cheriefroufrou · 01/07/2012 18:19

Ellie - eugh, so wet
Sam, never liked any Sams I've met, male or female

babysbreath · 01/07/2012 18:19

I am not a great lover of these:

Names that can be for a boy or girl like Lesley/Leslie, Tony/Toni etc.

Old ladies names like Rose.

Double baralled names like Ellie-May.

Names that are spelt weirdly.

Lastly, names that are associated with animals like Felix (cat), Rufus (dog) etc.

AWomanCalledHorse · 01/07/2012 18:33

Cherie, I love the name Samuel, but have never met a nice Sam either so have never considered it for my DC.

Thought of another; Russell. Sounds too much like the sound a packet of crisps makes, although all the Russ/Russell's I know are lovely.

manicinsomniac · 01/07/2012 21:30

I love at least half of the names listed here so far!

The only names I would actually go so far as to say I hate are:

Agatha/Aggie, Gertrude and Ursula. I just think they sound so ugly.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 02/07/2012 01:36

My brother's name is on here..

So glad someone else thinks it's a stupid name! Grin

burcham12 · 02/07/2012 12:41

Grace. G is without doubt the ugliest letter in the alphabet (IMHO!).

mayanna123 · 02/07/2012 13:41

Actually, I agree about G being quite ugly.

squoosh · 02/07/2012 13:44

Beatrice and Florence.

Both horrible!

badtasteflump · 02/07/2012 13:46

I don't like 'trendy' names - 'Jayden' springs to mind, but there are loads of others (sorry to any mothers of Jaydens Blush)

snowshoes · 02/07/2012 13:52

I hate any name that makes me think of 17 other kids I know when I hear it.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/07/2012 14:03

I have now read the whole of this typically unpleasant name thread.
MN has taught me an awful lot about names.
I dont hate any name and I dont attach any meaning to them i.e. posh, chavvy, naughty etc.

Having a beautiful, kind and sweet little boy called Jaidon will do that if you stumble on to the name threads on here.

I didnt name him so have no personal axe to grind about people denigrating my choice.
What bothers me a lot is the amount of people who would sneer at him without knowing him.
He is a very special little lad who has been through more than most of you adults and is still standing, albeit a little wobbly.

I had no idea that there were people in the world who would bin cvs, not grant interviews, take an instant dislike to someone and lable a child in their class as naughty purely based on their name - before I joined MN.

Its the nastiest thing about this site.

I am not talking about people having preferences for naming their own children. I wouldnt name my child James or Freya, Oscar or Amelie. I think they are perfectly nice names but I would chose them, nor would I make nasty sneering remarks about their parents because of them.

Again - to be clear - I didnt chose his name. It has a lovely meaning and it is of Hebrew origin, incase you are interested - it is the name given to him by his birth mother.
And I wouldnt change it for the world.

CleoSmackYa · 02/07/2012 14:03

My name has showed up a couple of times, but my daughters only once, whereas usually on Mumsnet it's hated. Winning! I hate Kieran,Callum and Kiera. I stay away from people named Sarah and Andrew, as everybody I've met with those names are more mental and twisted than I am, which is terrifying.

badtasteflump · 02/07/2012 14:06

Well I genuinely feel a bit shit now - sorry OhDo.

But actually I wasn't slating Jayden as a name, just the fact that there are four of them in my DD's year group.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/07/2012 14:10

Dont Flump
I honestly do not think people should like names that they do not like!

I wouldnt have even bothered mentioning it again if it had not been listed about 50 times on this thread.
AND its not just this thread. It is a culmination of bloody loads of threads about chavvy names.

People are free to like and dislike names. I wouldnt have chosen my DS's name myself. Its nice but not one that I have ever wanted particularly.

It is the reason for the dislike that pisses me off. NOt liking it because there are tons of kids called it is reasonable.
Not likeing it because you think the child will never amount to anything is not

BrainSurgeon · 02/07/2012 14:26

Mrs DV, I heart what you're saying and I don't like this thread either I'm afraid (sorry OP I understand you meant it to be light hearted)

With regards to MN, I would turn things around and say that threads like this and the others you mention taught me a lot about tolerance and openness, and now I wouldn't dream of sniggering at or criticising names was a bit of a twat before.
A tiny bit of silver lining......
