Which Name do you Hate Most?

I hate the name Jane; I'm not saying it's the ugliest name in the world, by a long way (that's probably Griselda), but because of associations. Firstly, it was the name of the most horrible bully at my secondary school; and now, also, there's the Inbetweeners movie, in which the gorgeous Jay gets paired up with a fat plain Jane who is not cute enough for him!

I was trying to contain myself with my first post about Ellen.

If I'm honest I am a name hater I dislike so so many names and I can't help myself! I don't like most of the names listed here apart from I'm alright with things like Charlie, Alfie, Lennox etc and I quite like Paisley Blush

But what I truly hate is what I now call mn names. Never before had I heard of people being called St John, Digby, Ptolemy, Peregrine and Persephone (apart form in stories) and I know some true old money poshos.

Btw I know 4 Freyas.

shoobidoo · 29/06/2012 13:59

Thankfully we all have different tastes!

But at the end of the day we name our children so they can be identified, no? So wouldn't you rather teach a class with one of each of Digby, Lydia, John, Persephone, Freya and an Ellen? Or a class full of several Archies, Evies and Ellies ?

IawnCont · 29/06/2012 14:08

That's true shoobidoo but the thing is with Persephone and Ptolemy is that they're very difficult names to carry. To begin with, they say so much about your background (middle class, well read) which isn't a bad thing, but sometimes in life you just want to be a blank canvas and not drag your parents' backgrounds along with you. And so although I think Persephone is prettier than Ella, I would rather be named Ella.
In My Opinion.

Littlecherublegs · 29/06/2012 14:11

Dont like what we'd say were 'posh' names!! - Quentin, Rupert, Persephone, Phillipa, etc...

And, at the other extreme, really 'chavvy' names - Jayden, Blade, Shannon, Lacey, etc...

Though as said above, its good that everyone has different tastes!! Would be boring otherwise!!

GhouliaYelps · 29/06/2012 14:15

Aiden - so twangy and yukky aiiiiiidooooon

milly, tilly, poppy, hettie, bettie, lottie

Amelie - jazzing up Emily..not

GhouliaYelps · 29/06/2012 14:16

oh, and Kane

why would you do that?

shoobidoo · 29/06/2012 14:23

But what if you are a lovely, normal person named Persephone? What if your parents didn't choose a 'posh' name because they are middle class but simply because they like the name? Don't YOU make your name and if you are a lovely Persephone won't people come to associate that with the name?

(and no, I don't have a Persephone, but I seem to love names that some of you consider 'posh' - Sebastian, Hugo, Quentin, Arabella etc).

Mollusk · 29/06/2012 15:00

I think I've put my finger on why I don't like Freya. It's like the sound a cat makes when it's coughing up a hairball.

Also can't bear Poppy, Maisie, Daisy etc, although I know several lovely children with those names...

3boysgirlontheway · 29/06/2012 15:00

Jack and Eva.

BelleTheBeatnik · 29/06/2012 15:04

Sarah, because I must have met hundreds - from 50-year-olds to newborns - I can't see past that, it just seems like a bit of a 'safe' choice. And Jake - Jacob is fine, but I find Jake on its own a bit 'yawn'.

Sorry to any Sarahs and Jakes out there, but I know how it feels: nobody likes my name either. Grin

Needalifeagain · 29/06/2012 15:04

Flora, Willow, Pebbles.
Really dislike mind you it may be bad connotationsWink

DoodleNoo · 29/06/2012 15:08

Kayleigh and Jayden

laughinglil · 29/06/2012 15:14

Tyler..just think it is a real naughty childs name! Love the name Oliver but really hate when people shorten it to Ollie....arrghhh feel like screaming when I hear Ollie.... don't really know why though!

Esclaffer · 29/06/2012 15:15

Amelie is not jazzing up Emily - it is a proper French name! Confused

I hate Shannon, Tegan (when it's pronounced Teg-an - I like Tee-gan), Ashleigh and Riley. And anything hyphenated unless done in extremely good taste.

All my dds' names end in an 'ee' sound so apparently I have different taste to everybody here.

Greensleeves · 29/06/2012 15:17

Hannah

Any shortening of Rebecca especially Bex and Becci

monkeybutt · 29/06/2012 15:17

Lorna. Ugghh, makes me shudder.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 29/06/2012 15:20

Wow, nice idea for a thread Hmm

ethelb · 29/06/2012 15:21

flynn as a first name.

people who like it have their ears tuned wrong.

AWomanCalledHorse · 29/06/2012 15:24

ethel, you've reminded me of another name...Finn/Fin/Finley, all I can think of is Shark Fin.

People who name their children after objects/stuff are quite mad;
I have a relative who is called V E L V E T. She doesn't like her name & is changing it next year when she turns 18 surprisingly Hmm.

Florence. Shortened to Flo, even worse. Reminds me of a rather 'popular' girl who got nicknamed 'Flo the Ho' (not really what you want for your daughter is it!)..plus she was a bitch.

Also dislike American styled names. Used to LOVE the name Ethan, but have now met so many naughty/disruptive Ethans that I have totally totally gone off it.

Stephanie.

Angela.

Barry.

LOL. All personal taste of course :) My name is on this post, and I always thought it was the most inoffensive name ever!

PrettyPrinceofParties · 29/06/2012 15:41

My name, my dad's name, great aunt and nephew have all been listed here! My nephew's name has come up several times, but I don't like it either.

I can't stand Duanne, Jayden, Preston, names beginning with an x or z, hyphenated names, Demi, Layla, Tilly and Lola.

missmiss · 29/06/2012 15:42

Millie.

Names beginning with K.

Anything hyphenated.

donttrythisathome · 29/06/2012 16:00

First I thought, well I don't really dislike any names.
But ye, those cutsie ones are definitely not for me. Would prefer something ugly like Gobnait (Irish name) or even Chardonnay to e.g. Milly. More gutsy!
