Which Name do you Hate Most?

I hate the name Jane; I'm not saying it's the ugliest name in the world, by a long way (that's probably Griselda), but because of associations. Firstly, it was the name of the most horrible bully at my secondary school; and now, also, there's the Inbetweeners movie, in which the gorgeous Jay gets paired up with a fat plain Jane who is not cute enough for him!

Any names where a man's name is adapted to make it female.

Thus we have:
Roberta
Angusina (I kid you not)
Donalda
Murdina

Dad's ego?

SystemofaDowny · 29/06/2012 12:03

Both mine and DD's name have been mention here :(

The name I hate most is Freya, for a very irrational reason. Everytime we are in a shop that sells those plastic mugs or pencil sets with names on, DD ALWAYS has to check if they have her name. They NEVER do, but they always have plenty of Freya stuff where hers should be. I have never met a child called Freya, neither has DD. If that name didn't exist then it would mean a slighty increased possibility of DD finding stuff with her name on and would make her so very, very happy.

"But lots of names are not 'sensible' in terms of spelling e.g. Niamh, Siobhan. Doesn't make them less of a name imo. Whether you like the names or not is a different matter of course."

Hmm Don't be daft. Niamh and Siobhan are perfectly sensibly spelled in their own language. Thats what sounds those letters make in Irish, and thats why they are proper names. You're being very ethno-centric.

theDudesmummy · 29/06/2012 12:05

I also do not like my own name at all (although I do like the shortening, which is what I use).

trixymalixy · 29/06/2012 12:05

Jayden, Teagen and other similar sounding names, there's a harshness to the sound of them that I dislike.

SucksToBeMe · 29/06/2012 12:06

Freya.

Viviennemary · 29/06/2012 12:10

For boys, don't like Wayne or Toby or Cuthebert, Herbert or Hector. Girls not keen on. Don't like Paige for a girl. I love the name Pandora but I've never met a single one.

kmdwestyorks · 29/06/2012 12:10

any name given as proof of how cool mum and dad must be

any made up name, especially when it's half of mum and half of dad

Any lettered family ( oh yes, they all start with K...)

and lastly the poor sibling sods with the same name spelled differently

after that all other names are just in or out of fashion and don't bother me

akaemmafrost · 29/06/2012 12:10

Neither of my kids names are on here and I've actually never seen them on a dislikable names thread. I am thankful for that.

Stellan · 29/06/2012 12:17

I can't really pinpoint any names I hate but I truly do not get the largely American trend of choosing names for girls like:
Everly
Brinley
Campbell
Waverly
Harlow
Lennox
Peyton
Hadley

And, with a couple of exceptions, I can't get my head around the idea of using surnames as first names.

Also, I strongly dislike most hyphenated names. Strangely, I dislike them even more when parents name their child Amelia-Rose but only ever call her Amelia.

Can't get my head around why parents thought naming their child Angel-Louise, Bailey-Rae, Casey-Leigh, Daisy-Boo, Heidi-Leigh, Lilli-Mai, Paris-Leigh or Violet-Rose was a good idea...

For boys, Cee-Jay and C-Jay are among the worst but there's also horrors like Jayden-James, John-Junior, Keegan-Lee, Kenzie-Lee, Vinnie-Lee and Jack-Daniel...

tourdefrance · 29/06/2012 12:20

SystemofaDowny I know two Freyas so they do exist! I always assumed those named mugs etc are mostly going to be names in the top ten list for that age group so you won't ever find your DDs name unless she's in that list.

I personally dislike abbreviated names given as proper names - Charlie, Alfie, Bertie - though no problem with Charles, Alfred, Albert.
I also don't like very cutesy girls names or girls names derived from boys names - not just the contrived ones (Thomasina?!) but the common ones like Harriet, Joanna, Louisa.
Luckily for me I had two boys as the options on girls names was pretty limited! One of my DS's names has been mentioned but not the other - I think probably as its uncommon but not pretentious (IMHO)

peachypips · 29/06/2012 12:32

tour my DS is called Charlie and I am called Joanna. Ha ha!!!
I hate trendy names like Finley or Harley or Riley. Opposite of timeless IMO!

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 29/06/2012 12:39

I hate LOADS of names! Grin

I particularly hate the trend for giving girls surnames/place names as first namesHmm

Harlow (have these people ever been to Harlow?! They wouldn't have named their DD if they had!)
Aubree
Paisley
Peyton
Hayden
Ryleigh (I know someone who's PG and chosen this for a girl and a boy. Riley if it's a boy, Ryleigh for a girl)

Having said that, I like feminine names for girls. None of these are imo.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 29/06/2012 12:43

My name came into fashion when I was about 14. Suddenly got an influx of teddies, stickers, cutesy signs etc with my name on it from well-meaning relatives who remembered how disappointed I had been 10 years earlier.

Booette · 29/06/2012 12:43

As usual DS1 & DS2's names are on here! I may have to start an AIBU about it! Wink

Anyway. For some reason I can't stand the name Leon. I don't know why, it just looks and sounds horrible to me! I don't even know why! Poor Leons!!

Even though I was bullied at school their names were so popular I've met many more nice people with the same names to cancel them out (Sarah, Charlotte, Naomi etc)

BonnieBumble · 29/06/2012 12:48

I hate the name shitwank - awful name for a child.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 29/06/2012 12:48

Also double barrel first names. At DD's old nursery they had a Kaci-May, Lacey-Mai and Gracee-Mae in one class. Unless the baby was born in the month of May, why add it in there?!

Ooh, and Jayden/Hayden.Kaiden and the worst one, Brayden. Yuck, yuck, yuck!

BonnieBumble · 29/06/2012 12:52

Arsewipe is another one I'm not keen on.

BonnieBumble · 29/06/2012 12:53

Also don't like Mother-Fucker, Motherfucker is fine but when you stick a hyphen in it looks really Chavvy.

BonnieBumble · 29/06/2012 12:54

Fuckwit will really date, I prefer timeless classic middle class names like Tosser.

shoobidoo · 29/06/2012 12:57

Bradley and Alfie

NoComet · 29/06/2012 13:05

Louise and Lydia,

Make me think of toilets and jam jars, sorry.

Lauren, just prefer Laura.

I'm going to defend Megan, because although it verges on the cute, the two I know are amazing characters and not cute.

Lumbering your DC with a down market, instant class labelling name like many of those above is just cruel.

Crazytictac · 29/06/2012 13:22

Clementine
Clemency

Dwayne
Shane

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 29/06/2012 13:30

Madison
Paula

shouldbedoingtheironing · 29/06/2012 13:37

Most names beginning with 'K' particularly Keith, Keiron, Kaydon, Koby, Kade, Kane etc.

I don't mind the cutesy names that are around at the moment so much e.g Archie but can't stand those surnamey type names especially for girls Riley, Harper etc...
