Desperate to name 4 week old DS and seeking opinions on the name Joby.

Despite being born at 41+1 weeks DS is still nameless at 4 weeks old and the main reason for this is other peoples' reactions to our favourite name. It's Joby and when he was born we both just loved it. However we've been inundated with comments such as 'why don't you just call him Toby' and 'why would you call him that'. I think the main reason for this is that we never said that Joby was his name, just that we were considering it.

So my question is whether to stick to our guns and call him Joby and ignore everyone else or to go back to the drawing board. Between DH and I we have french, italian and english heritage that we want to honour through the name and other names we've considered are Luca and Maxime. So what do you think/where should we go from here?

Our other DC are Camilla, Marco and Aurelia.

I think of jumping Jobi wood in tHomas and friends.

I don't mind your name call him what you like!

oliviasma · 09/04/2012 21:21

well i didn't think of poo trixymalixy! and really i think that there are so many opinions about names that you should go with what you like and i think it will be ok. You most deffo can't please everyone so you may as well please yourself. Good luck and enjoy him :) x

trixymalixy · 09/04/2012 21:33

I think if of 100+ posts only a couple have not said it makes them think of poo then it would be practically criminal to call your child that name.

oliviasma · 09/04/2012 21:35

if you say so..

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 09/04/2012 21:37

I saw the thread title and thought of a huge poo. Sorry. But I like all the alternatives you've suggested.

Nyac · 09/04/2012 21:37

It would be a bit like calling him kaka. Bad idea.

trixymalixy · 09/04/2012 21:37

I rest my case...

donotoutplz · 09/04/2012 21:41

"Job" is a Hebrew name meaning "hated". Take a look at the book of Job in the Bible for more information.

"Joby", which is a nickname for Job (not a name in its own right), sounds like slang for poo.

yes, you definitely can't please everyone, but you can at least try to choose a name that
a) doesn't mean something actively horrible,
b) doesn't namecheck a Biblical character who is famous for being tortured by God despite being a good man, and
c) doesn't recall excreta.

Maxim is nice. Maxime seems girly to me.
Luca is gorgeous.

CrustyOnion · 09/04/2012 22:19

Maxim (the additional e makes it sound feminine) is good. I like Luca, but oh my word, I dislike Joby. I too immediately heard Billy Connelly speaking about poos.

AntsMarching · 09/04/2012 22:30

What about Jacoby? Then you could call him Joby (or Coby) if you wanted to.

welovesausagedogs · 09/04/2012 22:35

Luca is my favourite and i think it works best with your other childrens names.

Superfly · 09/04/2012 22:35

I have loved the name Joby since I read the Stan Barstow novel many years ago. If my memory serves me right it was a nn for the main character whose name was Joseph?
I fell so much for the name I swore that if I ever had a boy that would be his name. He prefers Joe now though Grin

Go for it.

Clary · 09/04/2012 23:43

Reading your later post OP I rather like Alessio. I know a 10yo one whose dad is Italian. His brother is Luca or maybe Gianluca.

Another family I know with Italian connections went for Matteo (obvious and easy nickname) and Luca as well (think that may be Gianluca too). They all seem to go better with Marco than your others.

Louis is OK, IME more often said Loo-ee when spelled like that (tho I did teach a Louis who insisted on Loo-is).

I also thought of Arlo. Or Roberto? could be Robbie for a cute NN.

piprabbit · 09/04/2012 23:49

Salvo?

(not that I've been watching too much Insepctor Montalbano - oh, no, not me [bublush])

EightiesEasterChick · 09/04/2012 23:54

Another one saying no no no to Joby, yes to Luca.

RedHotPokers · 10/04/2012 00:07

I went to school with a Joby and never once heard anyone link the name to poo! He did get called Toby a lot though.

MoonlightandRoses · 10/04/2012 00:11

If you are no longer set on Joby, then the link below gives a good range of Italian names, (some more unusual than others Grin).

www.behindthename.com/php/browse.php?type_gender=1&operator_gender=is&value_gender[]=masculine&type_usage=1&operator_usage=is&value_usage[]=italian

Also, congratulations!

MoonlightandRoses · 10/04/2012 00:14

No, still being difficult - you just need to go to the home page and select "Italian Names"

Babycameearly · 10/04/2012 09:09

I'd go woth Jobe - nn Joby??

Or Jago - similar and fab, wish I'd been brave enough to use it!

camarelia · 10/04/2012 09:24

Luca just doesn't suit our boy so that's out :( I was thinking about it last night and I am really drawn to Olivier, I just think it's lovely and Oli is adorable. DH isn't keen though so I'm not sure how to get around him!

Stellan · 10/04/2012 09:35

If not Olivier, what does your husband suggest?

camarelia · 10/04/2012 09:43

DH likes Loïc, Sebastien and Alessandro. Out of this I quite like Alessandro but prefer Alessio which he doesn't like! To me Sebastien just looks like you can't spell Sebastian right. One we do agree on is Rocco actually.

OP posts:
EightiesEasterChick · 10/04/2012 09:51

Go for Alessandro and you can use Alessio as a nn? Or Rocco. It lines up with your other son's name although some might find that too matchy-matchy.

QuintessentialQuaker · 10/04/2012 11:17

Rocco and Olivier are both lovely!

BBQJuly · 10/04/2012 11:34

If you both like Rocco then go for it :) It goes nicely with your other DCs names.
