Desperate to name 4 week old DS and seeking opinions on the name Joby.

Despite being born at 41+1 weeks DS is still nameless at 4 weeks old and the main reason for this is other peoples' reactions to our favourite name. It's Joby and when he was born we both just loved it. However we've been inundated with comments such as 'why don't you just call him Toby' and 'why would you call him that'. I think the main reason for this is that we never said that Joby was his name, just that we were considering it.

So my question is whether to stick to our guns and call him Joby and ignore everyone else or to go back to the drawing board. Between DH and I we have french, italian and english heritage that we want to honour through the name and other names we've considered are Luca and Maxime. So what do you think/where should we go from here?

Our other DC are Camilla, Marco and Aurelia.

FFs Joby is not the same as JobbyI It's not even pronounced the same! ( and yes I'm in Scotland too and didn't instantly think of Jobby!)

That's like saying oh no couldn't call a child Alice as it's like calling it A lice.

fgs Hmm

WithACherryOnTop · 09/04/2012 13:14

I've heard it said,in certain accents, with more of an 'Oh' sound than an 'aw' sound.

And evidently a lot of people do think immediately of it.

trixymalixy · 09/04/2012 13:15

I'm in Scotland and the instant I saw it I thought jobby, sorry.

Piffpaffpoff · 09/04/2012 13:21

Sorry, but Jobby? No, no no. You are setting the child up for a lifetime of teasing.

Janoschi · 09/04/2012 13:24

Massimo is lovely and suits your other DC's names. I know a couple of little Roccos and they both have the rather fab 'Rocky' nickname, so to me that's a great name too. Can't use it myself because I have a Robin and THAT song is already a pain in the proverbial.

I'm really sorry but I think 'jobby' too... but I live in Scotland. As another poster suggested, you could maybe go for a Joseph Bertram Xxxxx type name and then have Joe-B, pronounced Joby?

Annunziata · 09/04/2012 13:31

Another Scot here, I'm afraid! How about Giacomo or Giacobbe, and then Jobe as a nickname? It's a bit of a stretch but not much.

trixymalixy · 09/04/2012 13:34

joby according to the urban dictionary

TidyDancer · 09/04/2012 13:37

Oh dear. Yes, Joby is not good. Aside from the association with turd, it's just not a nice name at all IMO.

Luca and Rocco are okay.

winefairy · 09/04/2012 13:42

Sorry, too much like poo. Pronouncing it Joe-bee just sounds like a Glaswegian saying jobby. Any Scot you encounter will snigger, I'm afraid.

I would chose something with either an 'o' or 'a' ending like your other DC. So I guess Luca.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/04/2012 13:46

How about jonty? Culd still be Joe for a nn.

lunamoon · 09/04/2012 13:46

I like luca best.

HandMadeTail · 09/04/2012 13:48

I just googled Joby. Apparently it means persecuted. Hmm

Nyac · 09/04/2012 13:50

You're not Scottish are you?

Don't do it.

xkcdfangirl · 09/04/2012 13:51

How about calling him Jobe (pronounced to rhyme with Lobe or Robe - Job in the bible is pronounced this way but I wouldn't call a child this name spelled Job as people would think it was pronounced job to rhyme with bob or fob)

You then don't get the jobby-poo associations and can call him joby (pronounced joe-bee) yourselves as a family nickname.

camarelia · 09/04/2012 13:57

I think the fact that Luca, Maxime and Rocco have been favourites for a while and we haven't gone with them suggests that they aren't the one. So really now we're trying to wipe the slate clear and get a fresh shortlist. So far I quite like Olivier (but would always be misread as Oliver), Louis (again would often be prenounced Lewis), Pascal (quite feminine), Alessio and Enzo (maybe a bit too car-y). I haven't put any of them past DH though. Could you suggest any others?

I really like Joby (Jo-be) and the name Job but I know people would read it as job-ee which put me off. I have liked it since I read the Stan Barstow novel at school.

eggsanityshatching · 09/04/2012 14:05

I know a Joby/Joben although it's a nickname for Manjuben. He's a lovely boy, his brother is Sunny.

TidyDancer · 09/04/2012 14:12

Louis will usually be pronounced as it should be. That's not one you should really worry too much about. It is lovely as well.

mrswoodentop · 09/04/2012 14:14

What about Fabian or Raphael. We know several little boys called Louis and they don't seem to get called Lewis.

Jonty or Jolyon or Julian ,perhaps with the French spelling Julien.

Stellan · 09/04/2012 14:16

I love Pascal - particularly apt since it is Easter! Pascoe is a jaunty alternative you might want to consider. I like both a lot.

Other names you might like:
Adriano
Aldo (apparently it means 'old and wise' - lovely)
Alessandro or Alessio
