Desperate to name 4 week old DS and seeking opinions on the name Joby.

Despite being born at 41+1 weeks DS is still nameless at 4 weeks old and the main reason for this is other peoples' reactions to our favourite name. It's Joby and when he was born we both just loved it. However we've been inundated with comments such as 'why don't you just call him Toby' and 'why would you call him that'. I think the main reason for this is that we never said that Joby was his name, just that we were considering it.

So my question is whether to stick to our guns and call him Joby and ignore everyone else or to go back to the drawing board. Between DH and I we have french, italian and english heritage that we want to honour through the name and other names we've considered are Luca and Maxime. So what do you think/where should we go from here?

Our other DC are Camilla, Marco and Aurelia.

If you want Joe as a nn then Jocelyn or Jolyon would be better. Joby is a dog's name - sorry!

EnjoyResponsibly · 09/04/2012 11:35

I'd go for Luca, you can change your NN to Lucameralia [busmile]

Poor DS will not thank you for calling him Joby, and will likely call himself Dave as quickly as he can [bugrin]

FoofFighter · 09/04/2012 11:37

If you like it use it. Who gives a flying fuck what other people think?!

[feeling rah today emoticon]

opinions are like assholes.

HaggisandTatties · 09/04/2012 11:39

I am Scottish and the first thing I thought just reading your title was OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! Joby - jobby, If he ever came to Scotland with that name he would be ridiculed - I am sorry but thats just my opinion and probably every other Scottish persons.

Luca is lovely though.

Sarcalogos · 09/04/2012 11:43

Another vote for Luca- its a great name,

I have met several Maximes, (all European), ALL women. ( sorry).

joby is cute, until you say in a fake Scottish accent, then all I can hear is poo and I can only ignite the bullying (again sorry)

Sarcalogos · 09/04/2012 11:43

*imagine, I'm not starting the bullying!

CecilyP · 09/04/2012 11:52

I too made the jobby connection and it is a term I heard long before I moved to Scotland - although here jobby and Joby actually sound almost identical. From your list, I only like Luca, as Maxime is too like the girl's name Maxine, though there are other variations of Max that would work. If you are happy with the nickname Joe, why not just go for Joseph. Otherwise there are plenty of attractive French/Italian names that would go with your other children's names and would work in the UK.

calzone · 09/04/2012 11:52

Google Billy Connelly and the wee beige jobby before you give the name to your son!!!!

Luca and Maxim are much nicer names imho.

Joby is just not a name! And forever more he will say Joby not Toby!!

doctordwt · 09/04/2012 12:18

Oh any of the other names are so much better, honestly!

Rocco is good. Luca even better. I love Maxim, Massimo too.

Jolyon though not Italianate would give you 'Joe' and fits well with your other DC?

How about Cosimo?

TheEpilator · 09/04/2012 12:28

Rocco or Luca are both lovely. I'm not scottish, have no scottish associations whatsoever and still thought "that means poo!" when I read your title. Sorry.

Job (although it would never be pronounced right, so Jobe perhaps) is ok, but please not Joby (you could still 'cuten' it to Joby at home)

gafhyb · 09/04/2012 12:31

I like all your other DCs names but I think Joby just sounds like a made-up, non-name. Sorry.

It's not a very solid-sounding name, it is too much of a diminutive, and reminds me of Jobby

gafhyb · 09/04/2012 12:32

I like Luca and Maxime

Also, what about Carlo?

Frikadellen · 09/04/2012 12:35

If you love the name then go with it. Luca imo is going to get popular and well it is important that it is a name you love. People will get used to it.

Stellan · 09/04/2012 12:35

Could you name him Job and nickname him Joby? While Job is likely to be mispronounced as 'job', it is a classic Biblical name that many people will be familiar with. I assume Joby is derived from it.

Alternatively, you could name him something a bit more 'run-of-the-mill' like Joel or Joseph or Jonah or Jonas and nickname him Joby.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 09/04/2012 12:35

I thought of poo too and I'm not Scottish! & the whatchamajobby (for the thing you can't remember the name of).

Out of the names you have said, I prefer Luca and it goes with your other DC's names.

Stellan · 09/04/2012 12:36

You could use Jody as an alternative - perhaps as a nickname for Joseph.

gafhyb · 09/04/2012 12:37

Joel is nice too.

nbee84 · 09/04/2012 12:37

Same thoughts here - Joby = Jobby!

I think Luca fits beautifully with your other childrens names.

BackforGood · 09/04/2012 12:43

Luca is the best IMO, although Rocco not too bad (with the mediterranean links)

gafhyb · 09/04/2012 12:45

This might sound a bit left field - but what about Victor (Vic/ Vinnie - OK I know not strictly speaking the correct nn for Victor, but ...)?

Luca

PercyFilth · 09/04/2012 12:51

No, it's a shit name :o

IsLovingAndGiving · 09/04/2012 12:52

I like the name Joby. There is a child called Jobe / Joby at our music lessons, but I had assumed it was spelt Jobe - is that an option? Also like Luca a lot. Go with what you love.

trixymalixy · 09/04/2012 13:07

No!!! Don't call him Jobby!! That's what he'll get, you are setting him up for the bullies.

The other names are lovely, but not overly keen on Maxime.
