Welsh Girl names.

We've decided to give DD due in June a Welsh middle name. DP is Welsh and we'd love to sort of honour that.

She's going to be called Rosalie and is also having Jean as a middle name.

We like Carys, Aerona, Rhiannon, Eilwen, Isolde, Ffion, Olwen.

We need some help picking and we'd love some other suggestions too.

Thanks.

Aeronwen
Branwen
Cadi
Delor
Eira
Fflur
Glain
Haf
Iola
Lilwen
Manon
Nia
Olwen
Swyn
Tesni
Wenna

Also, because she's due in June, what about Mefin? It is a shortening of Mehefin (Welsh word for June) and was mainly used for girls until the rugby player Mefin Davies became well known, and now it's more unisex.

Isolde isn't a Welsh name :)

Kayzr · 15/03/2012 07:05

Everyone says Isolde isn't a welsh name but it's in the welsh baby name book I got from the library.

Meant to add its very confusing. Confused stupid phone.

I think the problem might be finding one I can say Grin

I know a little Anwen, I think that's very pretty.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2012 07:09

DD is a Seren.

Hundreds of them in Wales, apparently, but far far fewer in South London :) Easy to say, easy to spell.

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 15/03/2012 07:11

Seren and Bronwen are lovely.

Both my kids have very unusual Gaelic names but theyre both easy to spell/ pronounce, thatd be my tip.

BelleEnd · 15/03/2012 07:11

Well, all I can add to that is that I am Welsh-speaking, and have been forever, and I've never met or heard of a Welsh Isolde. The Welsh version is the very pretty Esyllt (admittedly quite difficult to pronounce if you don't speak Welsh!)

Magw is getting popular too...

RedHotPokers · 15/03/2012 07:13

Carys, Elin, and seren work very well outside Wales iyswim.

Llinos is harder to say but pretty.

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 15/03/2012 07:17

Megan, Cariad, Cerys (? I know a few but not sure its welsh), Sian, Rhian, Anwen, Mari,

Kayzr · 15/03/2012 07:18

I love Seren too but DP isn't keen on it. Bronwen makes me think of Fireman Sam.

Is there a Bronwen on fireman sam???

it makes me think of Bronwen who was in neighbours - showing my age

Kayzr · 15/03/2012 07:21

Yes she's Sarah and James's mum. She's fairly new. She certainly wasn't in it when I was little

Oh yeah i remember now shes the hippy isnt she??

SoupDragon · 15/03/2012 07:29

How on earth do you pronounce Magw?

BelleEnd · 15/03/2012 07:30

Magoo like Mr Magoo, except the stress is on the a
I think it's a bit odd

SoupDragon · 15/03/2012 07:31

Magoo was my guess but I thought "No, it couldn't possibly be..."

BelleEnd · 15/03/2012 07:32

:o
I don't know where it came from- I hadn't heard of it, and now I know four little ones!

SoupDragon · 15/03/2012 07:33

Eirlys was another on my list of possible names for DD

Kayzr · 15/03/2012 07:33

I think I might rule out Magw.

I might just stick them in a hat and get one of the boys to pick one out Grin

I've just named my 4 week old Celyn Sionedd - but others we considered were Eleri, Manon, Gwendolen/Gwenllian, Mali and Mari. DD1 has dolls called Ffion and Betsan and Jesus, but i don't think that qualifies as Welsh

Welsh names are fab!!

QuickQuickSloe · 15/03/2012 07:35

Eirlys? That would have been my choice for a middle name if Ds had been DD.

BelleEnd · 15/03/2012 07:35

Eirlys is lovely.

Glad you're letting one of your DCs pick from a selection Kayzr- I know one big brother that got to choose a sister's name. He was into Ghostbusters, and Janine is now about twenty-five!

BelleEnd · 15/03/2012 07:36

deemented Who says Jesus wasn't Welsh? :o

MrsLovely · 15/03/2012 07:36

Enfys! pronounced Envis...it means rainbow I believe. Beautiful name !

gallicgirl · 15/03/2012 07:37

We have Alys. Easy to pronounce but people do assume it's spelled Alice.

Love carys.
