Well, title says it all really. DS is 10 weeks old and is a handsome smilng chap already so gets alot of attention. My parents hate his name but are sort of used to it...my other DC's love the name but its HVs and shop keepers and friends and friends of friends that usually just eh and then oh.

I wasnt bothered at first but now its starting to get to me. I do love the name but am a bit embarrassed now.

Would these sort of things make you change the name??? I'm thinking of changing it to Edward (Ted).

Blanket

StillSquiffy · 04/03/2012 15:11

Why not give us a list of 10 random odd names, including your DS's name. We can then comment and you won't be outed?

Xavier is disappointingly not exotic enough to warrant a name change! I agree Elijah would be more Hmm but that is still not even close to child cruelty. Unless it is Merkin I don't think name should be changed.

OP are you reassured yet?

GinPalace · 04/03/2012 15:13

OOOoo good suggestion from stillsquiffy

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 04/03/2012 15:13

Merkin! PMSL.

JasperJohns · 04/03/2012 15:14

I also guess Xavier

AKissIsNotAContract · 04/03/2012 15:15

Elijah is a lovely name. In fact all the names on that list are perfectly acceptable names that shouldn't warrant any laughter. I wouldn't change his name, if he really dislikes it when he's older he can always use his middle name.

cookielove · 04/03/2012 15:15

We had a student called Cinderella, she was an adult there was no mistake she was definetly called that. She came back later as agency staff and wanted to be called Cindy. Hmm

susiedaisy · 04/03/2012 15:16

I think it was Arthur and people are sniggering because it's usually an old mans name!

Tooblunt2012 · 04/03/2012 15:17

I like Elijah - what's wrong with that?? I've heard of a few Merlins recently which made me a bit Hmm but none that have made made me laugh out loud!

Agree that the suggestion of a list is a very good one Wink

Hmmm...I wanted to change ds2's name after silent responses from well, nearly everyone.

However he is 4 now and refuses to countenance changing it though I have offered...it is him, he is it, he has even named his favourite toy after himself.

I think we are stuck with it. I mean it's a good name and all...I just didn't want him to suffer.

Edward is nice though.

Stuntnun · 04/03/2012 15:20

As a sufferer of an unusual name myself (no it's not really Stuntnun) there are two considerations, a pro and a con:

CON - Every time he meets someone he will have to explain his name to them and/or they will comment on it. This gets very wearing after a while. No one asks for an explanation or feels the need to regale you on your name's meaning if you have a 'not unusual' name.

PRO - Everyone will always remember his name because it will have made an impact on them/they will have had to ask for the spelling/they will have had a conversation about his name. I'm particularly terrible at remembering peoples' names but they always remember mine!

susiedaisy · 04/03/2012 15:22

The name Arthur on itself is fine, it's the fact that not many people under the age of 80 are called it, bit like calling a baby girl Mildred, anyway in my neck of the woods it would be pronounced Arfer!Grin

Notalone · 04/03/2012 15:24

Oh god, I hate threads like this and have just wasted more time I will not get back on reading it.

OP - I don't think I like my DS's name. Should I change it?

Everyone - Oooh. Well in order to help you decide we need to know his name, otherwise we won't be able to tell you if his name should be changed.

OP - I couldn't possibly tell you that.

Everyone - I think his name must be Rudolph, Rambunctious, Rumplestiltskin etc etc

OP -

Everyone -

fabwoman · 04/03/2012 15:26

tooblunt2012 sorry your merlin comment may not have anything to do with my merkin suggestion!

SparkySparrow · 04/03/2012 15:30

susie I'm curious to where you are, my neck of the woods would also pronounce it Arferrr! Grin

Elijah is a nice name. The first thing that springs to mind though is a hobbit! bUt its a lovely name.

OP WHERE ARE YOU???? CONFIRM THE NAME

LizzieChickens · 04/03/2012 15:30

Is it Pickledypoohead?

Notalone · 04/03/2012 15:31

To be fair its the name that probably outs you Katefromkidderminster. Not exactly the most anonymous of user names hey?! Smile

FaithHopeAndKevin · 04/03/2012 15:32

Is it Roland?

browneyesblue · 04/03/2012 15:34

If it's Xavier, then I don't see anything strange or funny about the name. I have an uncle and a cousin with the name, and they've never had any comments about it. They both pronounce it HAV-ier.

Even if that's not the name, unless you've chosen a name like Merkin Hmm it's pretty rude of people to laugh.
