Well, title says it all really. DS is 10 weeks old and is a handsome smilng chap already so gets alot of attention. My parents hate his name but are sort of used to it...my other DC's love the name but its HVs and shop keepers and friends and friends of friends that usually just eh and then oh.

I wasnt bothered at first but now its starting to get to me. I do love the name but am a bit embarrassed now.

Would these sort of things make you change the name??? I'm thinking of changing it to Edward (Ted).

It's not something I would use personally, and I'm afraid I'd probably be a bit.. O_o if I heard someone call it out at the park or something. I agree with a PP who said most babies 'suit' cute names, its as they get older it might be slightly more of an issue.

But, that said, he is your child and if you genuinely like the name you shouldn't change it based on other people's opinions. I would perhaps consider giving him a more traditional middle name so if he decides it's holding him back or anything as an adult he can use an alternative.

threeleftfeet · 09/03/2012 15:12

i'm a fan of unusual names.

i would change it to give him an option, but continue to call him Bear as his NN.

FWIW I know someone who's called an animal name. his mum gave it to him as a NN when he was two and it's just his name now. It's how he introduces himself as it to new people and he's in his mid 30s now., I couldn't imagine him called anything else!

KidderminsterKate · 20/09/2012 16:41

Not been on MN for ages.......but thought I'd come back and update. I road the storm out and Bear is now 9 months. It trips off the tongue without embarrassment now and I love it. I can't imagine him as anything else and at playgroup the name seems to fit in with the others e.g. Archie, Billy, Freddie, Frank...even a Bruce!

Glad I stuck to it but still surprised I was 'brave' enough to do it - must have been the hormones! My others kids have unusual ish names but nothing like Bear!

yay Grin

bulletwithbutterflywings · 20/09/2012 16:59

Good for you, it's a gorgeous name :)

Niceupthedance · 20/09/2012 17:00

Good for you OP. there was a Fox at my playgroup and he was cool.

DoingItForMyself · 20/09/2012 17:06

I loved it then and I still love it now - v Envy as I wish I'd thought of it! Love Fox too.

Badgerina · 20/09/2012 17:13

Bear sounds like Bare. It sounds like naked.

It's also what all the kids say to mean "extremely" or "very"

e.g.: "That is BARE/BEAR good, blud!"

I would change it to Edward asap and call him Bear for a nn.

Badgerina · 20/09/2012 17:14

Hahahaha! Ok I just read the rest of the thread. Fair dos OP! Glad it worked out for you.

Callipygian · 20/09/2012 20:10

edam · 20/09/2012 20:12

Glad you are happy with it, OP.

Nagoo · 20/09/2012 20:13

Nagoo · 20/09/2012 20:14

prepare for another swathe of people who only read the OP telling you that you are a ninny though Grin

OwedToAutumn · 20/09/2012 20:18

Oh I knew I recognised your name! (I posted on your cleaner vs school dinners thread.)

FWIW, I didn't like Bear when I first saw it, but I do like it now, so all those people double taking back then, might love it, now.

I'm pleased you stuck to your guns!

pixiestix · 20/09/2012 21:25

Thanks for the update! Glad you stuck with it and are happy Smile

WhatWouldVegansDo · 20/09/2012 21:53

Glad to hear it! Bear is FAB! Well done!

WhatWouldVegansDo · 20/09/2012 21:54

(I voted YES above, btw, but have namechanged since then (NoHunIntended)).
Thanks for updating!

mayanna123 · 20/09/2012 22:06

Bear is great - masculine, cool and not overused!

I also know a Tiger although am not sure whether it is his nickname for full name.

I'm glad you feel happy with your decision!

Frikadellen · 22/09/2012 10:11

OP I am pleased you stuck with the name

In Scandinavian countries the name Bjorn (bear in Danish Swedish and Norwegian) is fairly common so I can 100% think of an adult Bear to me it is not a little boys name nor one someone has to be brave to have. I can also see an judge being Bear and any professional being so as I have seen it in Denmark when I grew up. I did a little research and In Denmark January 2008 there were 5298 people with the name Bjørn So really a fair few in a country of just under 6 million total.

It is however a marmite name My son has one of those (he is Conrad) so you will find people either will respond positively or negatively. The fact you love it is what is important.

For what it is worth I don't think you have "landed him" with a name (and personally I think it is a darn sight nicer than the Buddy so many on the thread seems to think the Oliver's choice of 1st name was better I just don't get Buddy as a name at all. Bear however for me is utterly normal.

EggsMichelle · 22/09/2012 19:51

I so glad you stuck with it, I love the name and we were going to name our first (due in December) Bear but we are not brave enough with first child, but going to reconsider it for second son, we really love the name Bear!!!

PinkFondantFancy · 22/09/2012 21:20

I'd just come on here to say Bjorn means bear and isn't very unusual. Glad you're comfortable with your decision to stick with it

Japple · 22/09/2012 21:37

My Husband is from Norway. He is over 6 feet,blue-eyed and blond. He says the
"Strongest, bravest"men have names like "Bjorn".He's all for That name. jill.

monsterchild · 22/09/2012 21:43

Op, If you like Bear keep it. And be happy your Dh isn't like my DH who is gunning to name our pfb Catfish.

5inthebed · 22/09/2012 21:45

I was just thinking of this thread the other day, glad to hear you've kept the name Kate.

AlmostAGoldHipster · 22/09/2012 21:58

Am I the only one disappointed that he wasn't called Dogtanian? Grin

Bear is a fucking brilliant name! I'm pleased you kept it. My girls are all called very unusual names (mind you, the middle one's name is becoming über trendy now so I might have to call her something else!).

I spent months choosing their names while I was upduffed as I wanted them to stand out from the crowd - they've all had the usual rough and tumble of the playground bullying thing but their names have never been focussed on as a target for abuse).

If I'd had a boy, he would have been called Erik Wolf.
