Hi Girls
I posted another thread yesterday about Mary. We have decided maybe to used or 2nd choice name and add Mary on the end so our name now is
India Mary.
Tbh I love both names but we are Irish & live here so India would be extremely uncommon over here. What is the general consensus re India in the UK I mentioned it on the other thread and other mns said it has reached its peak, used by people who wanted to appear aristocratic and is now dated. A poster also mentioned it may also come accross a bit chav due to it being a place name

I really appreciate any feedback as neither hubby or I have ever met or heard of an India. Btw we went to Mauritius on honeymoon so we have a reason to have an India(it is in the Indian ocean after all lol). Would love to know if you know any Indias or please let me know your honest opinion.

OP, I don't think there's much real point in trying to figure out the social connotations of the name 'India' on a mostly UK board, if you and your baby are in Ireland, where the connotations of baby-naming work quite differently. (Am Irish - I know the top few names have been the same as the UK's top names for the last few years, but other than that, I don't think there's much similarity.)

I would go with 'India Mary' if you like it, and it sounds as if you do, and not worry so much about what people, who are after all living in a different country, think!

Asia is popular in African American circles, and also Deja, Aja (pronounced like Asia) and D'Aja.

There is an Irish name Aifric that sounds like Africa minus the last A.

I think it is lovely, and you don't necessarily need a reason. It is a well-established name. And it is OK to choose a name just because you like it.

Have the parents of every Lewis, Iona, Isla, etc been to the islands or have some special association with them? Or do they just like the way the names look/sound?

My Dd goes to school with an Asia. Very pretty name.
