Dated or stuck up???

Hi Girls
I posted another thread yesterday about Mary. We have decided maybe to used or 2nd choice name and add Mary on the end so our name now is
India Mary.
Tbh I love both names but we are Irish & live here so India would be extremely uncommon over here. What is the general consensus re India in the UK I mentioned it on the other thread and other mns said it has reached its peak, used by people who wanted to appear aristocratic and is now dated. A poster also mentioned it may also come accross a bit chav due to it being a place name

I really appreciate any feedback as neither hubby or I have ever met or heard of an India. Btw we went to Mauritius on honeymoon so we have a reason to have an India(it is in the Indian ocean after all lol). Would love to know if you know any Indias or please let me know your honest opinion.

ach but these people aren't really in the know... YOU'RE in the know. she's your baby and it's her name.

yellowraincoat · 06/01/2012 01:38

What Aitch said, doesn't really matter what we think or what's popular. Just pick what you like.

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 01:47

Thanks girls-just love getting second opinions(&3rd & 4th). i said in the know as we are in Ireland & India & Maribel non-existant however Mary and Molly are. So really just trying to form opinions of India & Maribel.
As mentioned in previous post is Maribel a name that can be mispronounced or mispelt?

I like India. I love Gone With The Wind, India was Ashley Wilkes sister. I also love scarlet and Melanie. DD was meant to be Catherine Scarlet, but DP stamped his foot and wanted a say! damned inconsiderate of him

Louboo2245 · 06/01/2012 02:04

I would stick to what you like. Personally I like India as a name and paired with Mary it sounds fabulous. There will always be someone who does the ohhh that's an interesting name thing but leave them to it, she's your DD and it's up to you to find the right name for her.

kiki22 · 06/01/2012 02:13

I love India tbh Molly and Mary bore me to tears go for India she'll always stand out.

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 02:17

Thanks girls, I do love it alright!!
India Mary kinda balances itself out-& if she hates it when shes older you can't get a plainer name than Mary to fall back on lol!
Maribel is also very pretty esp Maribel Catherine but I think we are veering towards India Mary - Molly is very popular over here even though I do love it.

I quite like India Mary. And I'm generally quite difficult to please when it comes to names!

I will say I wouldn't use it myself because I have no personal connection or special love of India - so would feel weird introducing my baby to Indian friends, when they all know I've never even been to India iyswim! (rambling here, but perhaps there's some info in there that's helpful to you)

It will be very unusual, I imagine, in Ireland - but that's what you're going for if I understand you correctly, so that's no problem.

It's pretty and feminine sounding. And you've got Mary in there, nice and solid, and she can always go by Mary if she ever finds India a bit much.

3boysgirlontheway · 06/01/2012 09:22

I am in Ireland as well and India does not sound that unusual to me, I know two little girls called India.

3boysgirlontheway · 06/01/2012 09:25

I meant to say, I think it is lovely!

WhatstheScenario · 06/01/2012 09:39

I have to be honest, I dislike India. Its a fashion/celeb name to my ears and a bit pretentious. Are you Indian? Have you ever been to India? What is the reason/meaning behind the name, iyswim?

Mary is divine.

IheartmyPanda · 06/01/2012 09:59

I'm in Ireland too and know an India. I really like Maribel, I think Mary is very common over here really and does suit a middle name more so than a fist name.

IheartmyPanda · 06/01/2012 10:00

first grrr, not enough tea!

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 10:13

Yay delighted with the positive feedback. Iheartmypanda &3 girls boys on the way what are the little India's in Irleand like? When I picture a little India I think of a well mannered cute LO-well I suppose I would be biased picturing my own little girl! Would it be used here the same way as in the U.K in a pretentious type of way? Was there much surprise/negitive comments re the name?
Whats the scenario-we haven't quite been to India but honeymooned in Mauritius in the Indian Ocean & have very happy memories so we can say thats behind our inspiration!
Oikopolis-I think Mary balances it out perfectly, being honest its one name that can never be mispelt or mispronounced.I could see Maribel running into pronounciation & spelling issues like so many of the bel/belle names...

poppydaisy · 06/01/2012 10:30

I don't like all this labelling of names so can't comment on whether a name is chav or not.

But I do find it odd to name your child after a place, unless you've got a specific association to it, say if the baby was conceived there or you met there. To me, it is like naming a child France, Germany or Japan - a bit odd unless you'd have a good reason to do so.

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 11:16

Poppy Daisy we honeymooned in the Indian Ocean so we could say thats one of our inspirations:)

I quite like India, am in NI and know a lot of Catherines under 5 and a lot of Mollys too. Have to say see Maribel think cow not sure why?

jaffacakehips · 06/01/2012 13:18

I'd pick India over Marybella (saw other thread) as I think Indy is a wicked nn. We have it on our list for DC2 if a DD2.

India Mary is also lovely.

olefina · 06/01/2012 14:37

I like both. If worried about spelling of Maribel how about Mariella, less likely to be mispelt and still lovely. I like Marianne too, and think the nn Mari is lovely.

Mollydoggerson · 06/01/2012 14:51

I'm also in Ireland and I know of one little girl called India. It is unusal here but not unheard of and I think India Mary is beautiful, much nicer than India Erin (bit of a mouthful), How about India Mary Erin ....

Anyway I think it is very pretty and I like it alot.

oikopolis · 06/01/2012 14:53

YummyMummybee agreed on spelling/prn issues for Maribel/le. And India & Mary would certainly not (I assume anyway) create similar issues.

Missboobyvontits · 06/01/2012 15:03

As a mummy of an eleven year old dd named India, I agree that it is a beautiful name. I first heard it in Gone With the Wind so assumed that it was an old name and not in any way chavvy or pretentious.

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 16:11

Thanks Missboobyvontits- We have pretty much decided on India Mary now woohoo-how my mom wont be too upset as we always said we would name our lo after her but we will have Mary as second name!! I was hoping a mn with an India would relpy-have you always had very positve feedback re India do people question the inspiration or immediatly think of Gone with The Wind? Have you met many more Indias?
Oikopolis thats why Maribel is out...
Molydoggerson cant believe the ammount of Indias in Ireland woohoo!! Jaffaakes Indy is a cute nickname.
Think what I love most about India is that its not cutsey it will be lovely for a little baby and equally for a career woman x

OP posts:
diddl · 06/01/2012 18:01

I love India.

I would say that as a rule, people, not names are "chavvy".

"To me, it is like naming a child France, Germany or Japan"- I disagree as India is well established as a name.

Greenwing · 06/01/2012 18:51

Don't like it much personally - but that is just a matter of taste because I like names to have a good meaning as well, rather than being a country.

I only know one India, aged 11. Her family are definitely the opposite of aristocratic! I think India will date too.
