Hi Girls
I posted another thread yesterday about Mary. We have decided maybe to used or 2nd choice name and add Mary on the end so our name now is
India Mary.
Tbh I love both names but we are Irish & live here so India would be extremely uncommon over here. What is the general consensus re India in the UK I mentioned it on the other thread and other mns said it has reached its peak, used by people who wanted to appear aristocratic and is now dated. A poster also mentioned it may also come accross a bit chav due to it being a place name

I really appreciate any feedback as neither hubby or I have ever met or heard of an India. Btw we went to Mauritius on honeymoon so we have a reason to have an India(it is in the Indian ocean after all lol). Would love to know if you know any Indias or please let me know your honest opinion.

It is a celebrity type name to me. Jo Whiley's eldest is India and she is university age now I believe.

I do like it and India Mary keeps it classic IMO.

mathanxiety · 06/01/2012 19:34

The reservation I would have about India is that it's either a top or bottom of the pile name, without too many in between. India Mary definitely has a classic ring to it though...

However, to me it will always make the same impression as the name 'Ireland' -- names of countries just sound strange as first names to my ear, with the exception of Alba.

If you were to use Maribel I would preserve the Spanish spelling and not substitute the French ending (belle).

reptilewithchocolatebuttoneyes · 06/01/2012 20:15

I Know two Indias who are both lovely little girls. They would also be lovely if they were Marys or Mollys. Whichever you pick will turn out just fine. As long as the name is not a complete absurdity the beauty of the person makes the name beautiful in my opinion. I would go with the one that looks best with your surname.

pranma · 06/01/2012 21:17

A bit sad about Maribel though :)

pranma · 06/01/2012 21:19

I have known both an India and a China[!]
Nice enough names both of them.

mathanxiety · 06/01/2012 21:29

I know a Phillippina named Ireland..

Missboobyvontits · 06/01/2012 22:23

Hi yummymummybee, just seeing your comment from earlier. India was one of many girls names I liked but it was the only name my DH liked. Reaction has been about 99% favourable but I don't really mind if people don't like the name.

My dd is such a little character and the name suits her and since she is the only India in her school, no need for a surname. Unlike all the Ellie's, Georgias and Hannahs.

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 22:48

Thats it - Ella, Olivia, Ava, Ruby, Amelia, Hannahs etc are reigning supreme here at the minute.
I really do love the name and it goes well with our surname Hughes-rolls off the tongue nicely. It is such a pretty name & our first choice Molly is away too common over here... maybe when Molly falls down the ranks a bit we could use on future LO.
What I love about India is that it is perfect for a little baby and a career woman plus it is a name that will grow with her as opposed t outgrow her as Molly might...
Pranma never really loved Maribel with all my heart was trying to find alternative names to Mary and that was the most unusual beautiful name but I really love & am so excited about India Mary!!!

You just know when it is 'the one' and it sounds like India Mary is. Grin

Missboobyvontits · 06/01/2012 23:00

Wishing you all the best and I'm sure your little India will be as beautiful and amazing as mine! X

YummyMummybee · 06/01/2012 23:07

Thanks - just hope my mom isn't too disappointed that the first name isn't after her-always loved Molly but its just too common now so have fallen out of love with it. Thats so nice missboobyvontitis-pippilong bottom your so right I'm certain this is the one-really hope a silly celeb doesn't beat me too it-always loved Harper too lol!!

India is tacky, Molly is nice, not keen on Maribel/le.

pictish · 06/01/2012 23:16

India and Mary do not gel together well imho.

One or the other but not both together.

ImpatientOne · 07/01/2012 12:35

The place name one is always difficult - I love 'Florence' but DH is Italian and says to him it's like calling your baby Birmingham - no offence to anyone in the Midlands! Wink

EnjoyResponsibly · 07/01/2012 12:38

Love it.

AriesWithBellsOn · 07/01/2012 12:42

India Hicks was one of Charles and Diana's bridesmaids.

diddl · 07/01/2012 12:57

"India is tacky"

-could I ask in what way?

And point out that it is your opinion, not fact!

PercyFilth · 07/01/2012 12:58

My niece is called Birmingham

...... naaah, only kidding.

rachel234 · 07/01/2012 13:38

I would only choose a name place for my child if it had some special meaning. I wonder how a person from India feels about meeting an English person named India Smile?

I can also see that an Italian would see the name Florence like an English would Manchester or a German Berlin. When you hear a city/country name all the time then that's the association you've got. It then seems odd to hear it referred to a person imo.

puzzletree · 07/01/2012 13:47

Well Bharat is also a name for India and is used by Indians as a first name. I'll ask my Indian dad what he thinks about using India as a name but I don't think he'd care less to be honest.

PercyFilth · 07/01/2012 14:43

It's not really the same for Italians with Florence, because they would call it Firenze.

belcantwait · 07/01/2012 15:00

Dd is called India, she's always being told what a pretty name it is. I think it's still fairly unusual and def not chavvy!

Solo · 07/01/2012 15:26

I like India, but not with Mary on the end. Asia is lovely too.

AriesWithBellsOn · 07/01/2012 16:21

I have never in my life heard of anyone called Asia.

The only living thing I have ever heard of named after a continent was Africa in Riders. She was a horse.

Purplelooby · 07/01/2012 18:38

I think India is a beautiful name - so much so that I am about to add it to my not very shortlist. I don't think it matters that it had some popularity a short while ago - personally, when I read it on your post, I neither thought it was chavvy nor pretentious.
