Unusual Boys Names

Hi all,
Pregnant with DC2, got my 20 week scan in 3 weeks and we're hoping to find out what it is but i'd like to have a shortlist of names.
I think we've decided (for now at least) on Delilah Mei for a girl (Mei spelt that way as a nod to one of my favourite films, not a bid to be 'interesting') but really stuck for boys, plus DH and I just can't agree. We have Dexter so it needs to go with that, only other criteria is that it should be unusual but not really weird.

Can anyone inspire me?

Ivo, Otis, Ned, Fabian, Arlo, Bruno.

sonniboo · 19/10/2011 14:47

We're considering Vincent, Quentin, Arlo and Marcus.

Wow so many gorgeous names.
Annoyingly though a lot of the names I love (Nathaniel, Stanley, Dylan etc) have been used by family and friends already. The Nathaniel I know is 6 and rather adorably said we could use his name if we wanted, he didn't mind.

Prunella Ludo reminds me of the big monster in Labyrinth haha!

The tradition in our family for 5 generations was to have the firstborn son named Bennison. Because it is unusual, it may have been a mother's maiden name in the past, but my cousin's wife put a stop to that with the birth of their son. I'd be game for using the name as a middle name as DH doesn't want to consider it as a first name.

I have a single syllable surname. My rule is that the name cannot easily be abbreviated into a single syllable NN. Many people assume that Michael is Mike, Thomas is Tom, etc. I don't like the idea of a single syllable first name and a single syllable surname. Therefore, I am very keen on the name Jasper, but DH says that this is slang for a wasp and is ruling it out. I've never heard of such a thing. I think that we are going to have issues choosing a name. I have my 20 week scan in 2 weeks, and I am convinced we are having a boy. I've got to keep working on Jasper!

sausage I am getting so impatient now. I wish I was going for it this afternoon, so I could confirm that I am right that I'm having a boy! What do you think you are having then, a boy too?

rachel1970 · 19/10/2011 15:46

So many lovely underused names on here!

Sausage, I wouldn't call Dylan, Nathaniel or Stanley 'unusual' - I know a several under fives with those names.

Ludo could be short for Ludovik.

phlossie · 19/10/2011 16:21

I'm loving this thread! It's helping me get ideas for our next DC (3rd - don't know what flavour).

rachel1970 - you're dead right about those names not being unusual. We loved Dylan, but it's 16th in the top 100.

FYI - top 100 boys names in the UK in 2010 here

phlossie · 19/10/2011 16:23

Laf77 Jasper is a wasp! Exactly my reservation about the name. And we have a single syllable surname too, so I'm with you on having 2 syllables at least for a first name.

rachel1970 · 19/10/2011 16:50

An unshortenable 2 syllable works best with a short surname - we have one too! (If you go for 3 syllables, it will inevitably get shortened to 1 syllable, defeating the purpose Smile).

phlossie · 19/10/2011 16:53

My DS is Rufus which works a treat!

Prunella79 · 19/10/2011 18:08

i've got 2 family names i'd love to shoehorn in somehow - Loftus and Fountain, but not together obviously.
was absolutely gutted when having found a boys name i adore realised it can't be used with DH's surname without sounding comical Sad
but then i've got plenty of time to think up something new as i've not even conceived yet

I also got vetoed on Ptolemy for ds1 and ds2 Sad. But was thinking more of the famous mathematician, astronomer, geographer etc rather than the pharaohs. And like you I also loved Tolly as a nickname but figured that it could also turn into P.T. or pete or petey or even Lemy if ds wanted something a bit different as he grew older. Hey ho, if I ever have a ds3 it will be on the list again Grin

rockboobs · 20/10/2011 11:49

imogen - your Tolly sounds like mine - def got to have one now!

So, ask your DH how many Pharoahs he knows that are still living Hmm

Very pleased ds3's middle name has never appeared on any of the naming threads. Just wish DP we'd had the balls to use it as a first name.

evamummy · 20/10/2011 15:36

What's the name, rookboobs?

LaTristesse · 20/10/2011 16:44

Pretty pleased that DS's name hasn't cropped up on here either... I'm dreading it getting too popular. I have however added a few names onto our shortlist incase this new one is a boy - great thread OP!

phlossie · 20/10/2011 19:56

Come on guys - LaTristesse and Rockboobs - REVEAL! Or shall we guess? Augustus, Septimus, Pluto, Sinbad, Banjo, Dreyfus?

swangirl · 20/10/2011 21:13

Poise of poison

Artemus Somerset is a lovely name.If I was to have a DC4 and it was a boy I would consider Artemus. It would go well with my 3 dcs Athena,Ares and Odin

phlossie · 20/10/2011 21:23

Amazing names, swangirl.

This all reminds me - a friend's children's names get flagged in a couple of blogs from across the pond as being awful! She (the mother) is both appalled and maybe a little proud - here and here. Her daughter's name is Loveday.

DitaVonCheese · 20/10/2011 21:34

Kuga Grin

CaptainNancy · 20/10/2011 21:57

Septimus is my favourite name ever... but I won't be having 7DC so I can use it!

rockboobs · 21/10/2011 15:56

evamummy - I won't tell. its an old english word and I would definitely be identified in RL if I disclosed it. Wink sorry!

phlossie · 21/10/2011 15:59

CaptainNancy - you could give it to a baby born in September. In Roman times there were only ten months, March to December which is why Aug is 6, Sept 7, Oct 8, Nov 9 and Dec 10. January and February were added later. (or something - very ropey grasp of history!)
