Unusual Boys Names

Hi all,
Pregnant with DC2, got my 20 week scan in 3 weeks and we're hoping to find out what it is but i'd like to have a shortlist of names.
I think we've decided (for now at least) on Delilah Mei for a girl (Mei spelt that way as a nod to one of my favourite films, not a bid to be 'interesting') but really stuck for boys, plus DH and I just can't agree. We have Dexter so it needs to go with that, only other criteria is that it should be unusual but not really weird.

Can anyone inspire me?

Just realised that makes me look like a Porridge fanatic.

Have you considered Mr McKay? Grin

mulranno · 17/10/2011 20:12

Jago = cornish for James

onefatcat · 17/10/2011 20:34

I love Marcus- not very unusual- I would shorten to Markie (well not shorten but NN)

bigbluebump · 17/10/2011 20:59

Our ds's name (Quentin) is fairly unusual in the UK (less so in Germany and France), but I'm pleased to see that it's been mentioned a few times by others who like it.

Lots of the names mentioned on here are actually quite popular - for example, John, Henry, Gabriel, Finlay and Isaac are all in the top 100 names for boys last year, and Morgan and Arthur are only just outside it. Lots of people try to pick an unusual name, i.e. a name few people in their own generation had, and end up with the same names as everybody else who tried to be original. Choose a name you like.

purplebridgett · 17/10/2011 21:16

P.S. Ethan is also in the top 100.

And when I was a teaching assistant I worked with a young man who was christened Bernard but that was a closely guarded secret known to only a few staff. He went by the name of Ben and was horrified if you ever alluded to his real name. Even on most of the official paperwork he was known as Ben. So be warned - your child may not thank you for calling them Bernard.

Beau but it may be Beux?

I'm afraid around these parts Milo is a chocolate milkshake brand...

mountaingirl · 17/10/2011 21:35

Enzo. Popular here in France.

Lysander is a bit Jilly Cooperish isn't it? Once met a Rufus who couldn't pronounce his 'r's

I have a Thaddeus Jude! Funny to see it come up on the names. Wish I had seen these type of pages when I was pregnant with my DC. Such amazing suggestions. I love them.

I really like Woody, short for Elwood.

Also, Aldous - although I worry it's a tad pretentious.

Griffin is a great name teachpeach

Heath, I don't think it's used much over here.

iamamyp · 17/10/2011 23:11

My son is called Douglas, we call him Dougie. I've only ever heard of one other and not near we live. I really like Jem - it's an old fashioned form of James but it might be too girly? And Clem (Clement) is lovely. Bernard was on my list, Bernie is a great name and I had an ace uncle Bernard. But then you think Bernard Manning, Bernard Matthews....

PootlePosyPumpkin · 17/10/2011 23:14

There are some lovely names on this thread. I once worked with a Thaddeus who was know as Tad. Always liked that name.

mommom - I have a friend with a little boy called Zennen, named after Sennen Cove Grin. I thought he was the only one!

PootlePosyPumpkin · 17/10/2011 23:15

iamamyp - DS2's teacher has a little Dougie - cute name Grin.

PootlePosyPumpkin · 17/10/2011 23:20

So busy getting excited about other people's suggestions I totally forgot to add mine! The names I loved but were unable to use due to having a "traditional" and stubborn DH were:

Levi
Elijah
Tad
Theo
Marcus
Isaac (not unusual but I do love it & don't actually know any)

I also liked Milo but it's forever a Tweenie to me - my older DSs watched so much Tweenies when they were little that I doubt I could get past the memories Sad.
