'Hipster' names?

babybumblebeee · 14/10/2011 00:04

Having a chat with a friend today about what we consider to be hipster names.

Some names mentioned were Matilda, Florence, Esme, Felix, Leo, Finn, Oscar

What would you add to the list? I am particularly interested as these are the type of name I go for and am trying to work on a list!

I think you're right in that they're old names (not standard classics) that are popular at the moment. I quite like Otto which feels quite hipster to me!

Agatha, Mabel, Quentin, Stanley all have a similar retro feel IMO.

Matilda, Florence, Esme, Leo are popular, trendy names.

Hipster names are more like Jean.

Don't know what 'hipster' means!

No self-regarding hipster is going to give their child a name as common as Finn has been for the last number of years :o

They're more likely to choose Trevor.

I think that list would have been extremely hip about ten years ago. I think it's just popular now, though.

I don't get the 'hipster' meaning either, I'm afraid. Most of the OP's suggestions are simply popular, trendy names, especially Finn, Oscar, Matilda and Florence, there is nothing 'hip' about them imo Confused.

I do love some of the other suggestions though - Mabel, Hester, Quentin and Hugo are quite 'cool' imo.

I think the Shipping Forecast is a rich seam of inspiration for baby names.
I wish I was still fertile. Viking and Cromarty ROCK as hipster names, no?

Hipster and trendy are not that different you know! A name doesn't have to be unusual to be hipster [hhmm]

If you google 'hipster names' you would see that they are often popular choices!

I really love Matilda/Matilde at the moment :)

If something is trendy, it's not acceptable to hipsters.

Matilda is trendy.

That list is the trendy names of yesterday, not the hipster names of tomorrow.

em, now that babybumble has told us about nameberry, do we need MN? A richer seam of naming goodness I have never seen.

babybumble, you are taking this terribly seriously, aren't you? Grin

you mark my words. There will be a cluster of Cromartys when the so-hip-it-hurts brigade hit the Shipping Forecast.
