'Hipster' names?

babybumblebeee · 14/10/2011 00:04

Having a chat with a friend today about what we consider to be hipster names.

Some names mentioned were Matilda, Florence, Esme, Felix, Leo, Finn, Oscar

What would you add to the list? I am particularly interested as these are the type of name I go for and am trying to work on a list!

Farrah

Archie

Florence

Nice, but sort of retro modern, ifkwim, But, everu one will have different opinions..

babybumblebeee · 14/10/2011 00:17

I think you're right in that they're old names (not standard classics) that are popular at the moment. I quite like Otto which feels quite hipster to me!

Hugo, Pearl, Mabel, Hester, Benedict?

rachel1970 · 14/10/2011 07:05

Agatha, Mabel, Quentin, Stanley all have a similar retro feel IMO.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 14/10/2011 07:10

Matilda, Florence, Esme, Leo are popular, trendy names.

Hipster names are more like Jean.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/10/2011 07:10

Martha , Sadie, Jude

Don't know what 'hipster' means!

SheCutOffTheirTails · 14/10/2011 07:16

No self-regarding hipster is going to give their child a name as common as Finn has been for the last number of years :o

They're more likely to choose Trevor.

Haberdashery · 14/10/2011 07:23

I think that list would have been extremely hip about ten years ago. I think it's just popular now, though.

I don't get the 'hipster' meaning either, I'm afraid. Most of the OP's suggestions are simply popular, trendy names, especially Finn, Oscar, Matilda and Florence, there is nothing 'hip' about them imo Confused.

I do love some of the other suggestions though - Mabel, Hester, Quentin and Hugo are quite 'cool' imo.

PMSL at the last 5, Arf.Grin

Arfurnoozingbrain · 14/10/2011 09:20

I think the Shipping Forecast is a rich seam of inspiration for baby names.
I wish I was still fertile. Viking and Cromarty ROCK as hipster names, no?

Arfurnoozingbrain · 14/10/2011 09:21

uterus allow me to salute your fine use of punny-ness in your user name :)

babybumblebeee · 14/10/2011 09:38

Hipster and trendy are not that different you know! A name doesn't have to be unusual to be hipster [hhmm]

If you google 'hipster names' you would see that they are often popular choices!

I really love Matilda/Matilde at the moment :)

charitygirl · 14/10/2011 09:48

YY to 'Jean' - I love it in a poncey way, but sad old non-hip DH vetoed it.

babybumblebeee · 14/10/2011 09:52

I really like Jeanie actually

If something is trendy, it's not acceptable to hipsters.

Matilda is trendy.

That list is the trendy names of yesterday, not the hipster names of tomorrow.

scarlettlips · 14/10/2011 10:21

Betty, Joan, Pearl, Bert, Jimmy and Bob!

thesurgeonsmate · 14/10/2011 10:25

em, now that babybumble has told us about nameberry, do we need MN? A richer seam of naming goodness I have never seen.

Arfurnoozingbrain · 14/10/2011 10:33

babybumble, you are taking this terribly seriously, aren't you? Grin

you mark my words. There will be a cluster of Cromartys when the so-hip-it-hurts brigade hit the Shipping Forecast.
