'Hipster' names?

babybumblebeee · 14/10/2011 00:04

Having a chat with a friend today about what we consider to be hipster names.

Some names mentioned were Matilda, Florence, Esme, Felix, Leo, Finn, Oscar

What would you add to the list? I am particularly interested as these are the type of name I go for and am trying to work on a list!

I'd just like to point out that my 20 year old is called Oscar. Nice to know I was so ahead of the times.

Finisterre would be really retro, as it no longer exists on the shipping forecast.

CaptainNancy · 14/10/2011 23:04

I take it you all know about Unhappy Hipsters...?

CaptainNancy · 14/10/2011 23:05

btw- I only just 'got' Jermaine Byte!

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 15/10/2011 07:30

Since when has 'hipster' been synonymous with popular/common?

A 45-year old Tory has (fairly) recently called his DD Florence. Surely that name has now lost all 'hip' credentials. Grin

The others, meh, common.

Babble have a list of hipster names. here I have to say, I quite like Holden :) Followed, by the usual debate over what, precisely, constitutes a hipster name...!

HoldTouchEngage · 16/10/2011 08:36

Jude
Saul
Gabriel
Archie
Oscar
Felix
Theo

Susannah
Martha
Matilda
Beatrice

Esme

tammytoby · 16/10/2011 16:50

Archie, Oscar, Esme, Matilda are definatly far too common to be 'hip' imo!

reallacecurtains · 17/10/2011 07:10

HoldTouchEngage, your names are very mainstream.

Real hipsters wouldn't be on mumsnet but would be squatting without leccy off the grid in some Dalston/ other as yet challenging inner city London region or some remote island in the outer Hebrides knitting conceptual art from miscellaneous items salvaged from skips or washed up on banks of local shore/ river bank.

hulabula · 17/10/2011 12:33

Actually the super hip wouldn't ask the mumsnet masses what names THEY consider 'hip'. They're confident enough in their choices without our help Smile.

mellymooks · 17/10/2011 13:07

Thank you baby it's my son's middle name!! I have always loved it, it's cornish so links with my roots too which I like Grin

scottishmummy · 17/10/2011 13:24

most names posted on thread are standard mc
nice enough but solid middle class, like angst about schools and catchments
anyone hipster isnt hanging with da mn crew to get heads up on names...

DiaryofaSleepDeprivedMum · 18/10/2011 10:20

Violet, Ruby (in fact any name that could be a colour), Alfie, Ruben, Evie, Harley, Ashton, Billy, Joel, (Ooh, see what I did there? Billy Joel! Scrap those two - you're looking for hipster names!) Indiana, India, Jenson, Seth. Some of the names above are like comic strip superheroes. Think of the high expectations for a boy christened "Viking". What if he grows up in touch with his feminine side and develops a love of cross stitching?

dearheart · 18/10/2011 14:20

Farrah is a fab name.

NinjaChipmunk · 25/10/2011 22:07

whoever mentioned Great Ganilly - I'd love to name one of my kids that.
