Anyone actually managed to pick an unusual name?

I'd really love my DC to have an unusual name and personally wouldn't like it if there ended up being 4 others in his/her class at school etc. I gathered together a list of names I like bit looking on here loads of other people like them too so I've clearly, subconsciously, picked up a penchant for fashionable names. So..I was wondering, did you pick an unusual name for your DC which is actually still unusual now they are at school? How did you do it and have you got any tips for avoiding the latest trends?

DS is Raphael which is fairly underused.

I've never met anybody with my name. It's a Beach Boys song.

Thanks, Lilah has been struck, I love Angus and Gus, it's one of my favourites but DH is now going off it as we called the bump that for ages, thanks for the votes for Peggy and Otto!

Enjoying the Cornish names although I'm also keen to know if Scones's DC is called Grumbla.

Actually there are quite a few Cornish places that would make good names, on top of those (like Lamorna and Sennen and Morvah) that are already used. Gwithian would be quite nice and is similar to some Welsh names.

Thanks wiggles names in NI are very different though, all my friends there have very different names to my friends here (and most of them are not Irish names) Still, I am concerned about Cillian's popularity and Caoimhe is out from the total number of comments here so far about it!

My DD is Xantia. Never heard of anyone with the same name (other than a car!).
Closest name would be Xanthe I guess.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 21:46

Xantia is beautiful but DH works with cars so, no, unfortunately car manufacturers are really in to pretty and unusual girls' names aren't they?

My dd1 is the only Briony in her school.

PeppaPigandGeorge · 05/10/2011 22:05

I know a Briony. But only one and I think it's lovely!!

Tortoise · 05/10/2011 22:07

Carlita I know of a Gaia (she's about 5yrs old I think), had never heard the name before.

ShowOfHands · 05/10/2011 22:10

Nope. Am thoroughly unmoved by it...

AberdeenAngusina · 05/10/2011 22:14

A couple of generations ago, someone in DH's family invented a girls name by adding "inda" to her grandfather's name. Although it's an invented name, it doesn't sound invented because there are lots of genuine "inda" names - Belinda, Lucinda, Melinda, Linda. We used it for DD's middle name; apart from relatives we think it's a virtually unique name. It's not on MN's baby name list, and doing an "advanced search" on MN doesn't produce any hits. According to the gov statistics for Scotland, there have only been 6 of them in the whole of Scotland between 1855- 2010, and those six include DD, her granny and a cousin. It hasn't been in the top 1000 in the USA ever.

Nobody has ever reacted with a Shock or a Hmm or a Confused though, because it doesn't sound invented.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 22:15

showofhands by yours you mean? I like that it's so unusual.
