Anyone actually managed to pick an unusual name?

I'd really love my DC to have an unusual name and personally wouldn't like it if there ended up being 4 others in his/her class at school etc. I gathered together a list of names I like bit looking on here loads of other people like them too so I've clearly, subconsciously, picked up a penchant for fashionable names. So..I was wondering, did you pick an unusual name for your DC which is actually still unusual now they are at school? How did you do it and have you got any tips for avoiding the latest trends?

Thanks for all the PMs by BTW, it's like being told secrets and I like secrets! Grin

I think there is an unusual concentration on MN of mothers to Astrid... Grin

My 2 have fairly uncommon names- but I don't think they're wacky, and have been used in the UK for a long time now. (St. Magnus from 12th century I believe).

From your list we know an Otto, an Oonagh, 2 Rufuses (Rufi?), never come across an Alvah nor a Tierney (work in education).

What about Lorcan?

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 22:30

Ooh, I LOVE Lorcan, gorgeous! Magnus is on our list actually, just not one of the sample I posted here, DH particularly likes it. They're not wacky, just great names. Tierney is one of my favourite girls' names so glad you haven't met one. People who work in education are so handy for these things!
Rufus has bitten the dust...

I have a Córmac Smile

mopsyflopsy · 05/10/2011 22:35

We have a Quentin, which I think was used only 13 times last year.

Witherhills · 05/10/2011 22:38

My son's middle name is Bede. It's after his grandfather, but it's grown on me a lot

LetThereBeRock · 05/10/2011 22:38

Ruth is beautiful,Emsy. It suits a baby, toddler, child, teen and adult. A perfect choice.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 22:39

I like Córmac but totally incompatible with surname, everyone would think poor child had a stutter when her said his name Smile Quentin is really cool but my neighbour is called Quentin (the only one I've ever met) so it'd be a bit odd!

Nice to see a few of my DC's names on here.

They have very many between them.

I have spotted Asher, Asa and Cassius already Grin

Lennon, Marley, Harley, Coltrane, Rudy, Levi, Ashton, Peter, William, Billie, Billy, Jake, Jordon, Hendrix and Jaidon

FontOfAllEvil · 05/10/2011 22:44

I have a Naia, she is the only one I know, and I think only 9 others in her year of birth. I love Otto, great name.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 22:48

How many children do you have thefirst?! Very cool names! My (girl) dog is Rudy :)
Naia is nice but have niece on the way called Naima!

You have great taste in names,MrsDevere. I've always loved your dc's names, though I think your dd's has to be my favourite. It's such a beautiful, elegant, spunky and strong name for a girl. Perfect for your wonderful dd.

LetThereBeRock · 05/10/2011 22:50

I want to use most of these names.Envy

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 22:51

what is the DD's name?

OP posts:
FontOfAllEvil · 05/10/2011 22:52

How do you pronounce Naima (i'm dreadful at pronouncing names)?

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 22:52

Which ones do you like best letthereberock?

OP posts:
Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 22:53

Nyeema, I assume Naia is Nya?

OP posts:
FontOfAllEvil · 05/10/2011 22:55

Ah, Naima is a pretty name, Naia is indeed, Ny-ah. I do realise the irony in giving dd a name that people can rarely pronounce when I am so rubbish at it myself! Blush

thefirstMrsDeVere · 05/10/2011 23:02

Thank you letthereberock very lovely of you to say so. I suspect your liking for my choice in names is linked to the spirit of your MN name Grin

carlita DD's name is Billie. I named her after Billie Holiday. Smile
Five children btw. Lots of names and them more DCs I had the more names they got. DC 5 has loads Grin

specialknickers · 05/10/2011 23:03

This thread is great. When I was pg with DC1 I had two names picked out: Linus if he was a boy, Astrid if a girl. Quite definite about them, not going to change my mind and then... This precious, tiny, defenseless creature arrived in my arms. It fell to me to protect him from the whole damn world. I suddenly started to worry that the unusual (but if you ask me, achingly cool) names I had for him were just a projection of my own personality. Not about him at all. I called him Luke.

You could have blown me down with a feather, but Luke he was and Luke he will always be. I had Luke when I was living overseas, so I didn't really think too much about whether it was popular or not, it just ticked all my boxes (easy to say, totally international, cool (in a cowboyish kind of way) went with his surname, was anonymous enough for him to make it his own. When we moved back to the UK I expected to be swamped with Lukes and to hear the name everywhere... We haven't. Actually, it's a name that's not fashionable at the moment (despite being in the top 50) and living in a hipster kind of town (Brighton) I hear names like Wilfred being shouted way more often.

Point of the post: pick a name you love, fashions change and yesterday's boring classic is today's conversation stopper. If you want to be really different, pick a name that's one generation back - John, Norman, Gerald etc. They'll be the one's our kids will be choosing most likely, so it's a great way to stay ahead of the curve!

DownyEmerald · 05/10/2011 23:06

Live in England and choose a not-very-popular-even-in-Wales Welsh name - that's how we did it! It is in the top 100 for Wales, but it's 1500ish for England.

But we didn't choose it before she was born - we aren't that clever. It was inspired by one of the midwives.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 23:10

Billie is cool. Good tip downy but you're not playing by the rules!
Right, time for some sleep, thanks everyone my lists are amended and refreshed! Grin

Mine will be, in a few weeks, a Travis or a Meg, depending on the genitals. Both of these are certainly uncommon, if not completeley unusual.

Ondine · 05/10/2011 23:53

I picked Adelaide for DD, was unusual and still is. I'm still happy with it and I don't know any others so far.
