Anyone actually managed to pick an unusual name?

I'd really love my DC to have an unusual name and personally wouldn't like it if there ended up being 4 others in his/her class at school etc. I gathered together a list of names I like bit looking on here loads of other people like them too so I've clearly, subconsciously, picked up a penchant for fashionable names. So..I was wondering, did you pick an unusual name for your DC which is actually still unusual now they are at school? How did you do it and have you got any tips for avoiding the latest trends?

DD is called Ruth, which falls into the 'everyone's heard it but nobody uses it' category. Hope people don't think it's ugly. It was the only name DH and I could agree on. I know a few Ruths of my age but not met any baby Ruths so far.

Really wanted to call her Cressida but clashes with our surname unfortunately.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 20:47

My DH loves Finn but yes, i was one I feared was getting too popular, thanks for the confirmation on that. I'm not going to be totally reliant on the stats, I just think they are helpful for getting some names off the list, it's a start!

my son is called Lowen, its cornish for happy. don't know any others.

ditavonteesed · 05/10/2011 20:49

basking my puppy is called eric, tis a good name.
my dd's are unusual, tabitha and genevieve, problem is dd2 still wont write her full name and most adults spell it wrong, she was on the standard setters letter and they even spelt it wrong on that. my bad.

Please can someone call their baby boy Rowen. I love it, and don't think it is hugely over used is it....?

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2011 20:50

agree that Astrid is a lovely name! had it on my girl list for ds2 and ds3 but alas it was not to be

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 20:51

I like Eric - reminds me of bananaman! Rowen is good too, adding both to list!

emsyj, I know someone called Cressida and she's never forgiven her parents Grin

FWIW, I like it.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 20:52

I think Ruth is very pretty BTW

I'm a Ruth emsyj definitely not met any babies with my name although a few have as a middle name after elderly relatives.

emsyj · 05/10/2011 20:54

I think Cressida is lovely, but I guess you can't please everyone and lots of people have that icky feeling about their names - I hate mine!

Thank you Carlita Smile - I think she really suits it.

Shinyshoes1 · 05/10/2011 20:55

My daughter is called Autumn, I've only ever heard that once. A royal I think

baskingseals · 05/10/2011 20:58

always liked the idea of twin girls called Astrid and Stella.

never going to happen now. my children's names are not unusual enough to mention, thanks to dh.

oh that great god compromise

booyhoo · 05/10/2011 20:58

i dont like my name. it isn't unusual, not so common now for babies and younger children but i know lots of people my age and older with it.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 20:59

I love Autumn, it's beautiful, but, I have a bit of a thing that I would onlty call my daughter Autumn if she was born in, well, Autumn and the baby is due in Spring - doesn't quite have the same ring does it?

she was born in Winter Grin

I suggested Santa for a boy, scandinavian I think

Hulababy · 05/10/2011 21:00

PPT - I know a little boy called Rohan which is quite similar.

nomorethefool - I teach a little girl called Lowen.

I do think a lot of it is luck and where you are. DD has a pretty popular name in terms of the stats sites. However she is still the only one in her school and none in my school either, and none amongst our family and friends. So you can never tell.

Xavielli · 05/10/2011 21:00

When are you due carlita? April is a lovely name!

LittleWhiteWolf · 05/10/2011 21:02

I love the name Astrid--its high up on our shortlist should this baby turn out to be DD2. I grew up in Germany and knew a few there, but have yet to meet another since coming back to the UK.

My name is pretty classic and has been used for centuries. Its lovely, but I was one of about 6 in my year. There were 2 in my form even. I got pretty sick of being called by my full name or given nicknames by my peers based on pretty random stuff. I had a green coat one winter and was forever afterwards called "Green Name". It is something I took into consideration when naming DD. Although I do know I can't guarantee that she won't end up as one of 6 in her year at school.

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 21:03

Late March. April is on my list but DH will only accept it as a middle name. His mum is called May and hates it. I

little yes, exactly what I'm trying to avoid, I realise there are no guarantees but one can try!

I know a Linus and several Autumns.

I have a Brennan - the only one in his school, and never heard of anyone else with his name. I also have a Brogan - again the only one with her name, but have heard of two boys with the same name. And i have a Tate. He was unique until Emma bloody Bunton copied me.

toddlerama · 05/10/2011 21:06

My DD1s name is rare. There are only 30 in the country TOTAL. None registered her year of birth. DD2 is Ruby Grin

Carlitawantsababy · 05/10/2011 21:08

So, those of you who worjk in schools and have DCs in school, let me try a few of my names out on you, tell me if they are actually really common, boys: Cillian, Gus, Otto, Finch, Rufus, Nate, Stanley, Oisin, Seth, Angus, Alvah, Felix
