My baby is going to be one soon and I'm still not happy with her name! :( I know I sound crazy but just can't get over it. I worry her name will give other kids a reason to make fun of her or bully her and she'll hate it. The name was chosen as a compromise to please her older brother and dad but thinking back they would've got used to any name if I'd insisted. The whole family esp big bro and sis and her dad are used to it, is it really possible to change? any one been through this? please help with advice and please be kind as I feel so bad and guilty about it already :( Thank you

I think it's pretty, but I guess you are worried about the Meena/Miner pronunciation issues?

I am worried she will be called "mean" nn :( Can't stop thinking about it, didn't cross my mind till too late. She was going to be Hana or Mina but her brother said he really didn't like Hana so I wanted to please him. We also had Yasmin and Amelie on the list till last minute. Wish I went with any of the others as they are more common and would've made her life easier I think.

I know a 15 month old called Mina, I think it's a lovely name, very sweet ironically when I last saw her she only had two teeth, in fang position

And Yasmin... Is that not a form of contraceptive pill?

Mina is better than Hana, and better than Yasmin and Amelie too, IMO.

They'll only call her "mean Mina" if she actually is. They might call her Meen for short but not Mean.

I like Mina too. I know a lovely German one.

Every single name can be teased - silly Tilly, smellie Mellie, Willy, et. etc. but in my opinion children are pretty accepting of different names.

Any name can become a point of teasing. Children are very creative in their name rhyming and mean words. Mina doesn't strike me to be mightly high up on the teasing radar unless your surname is something Peenar.

If children are going to tease they will find something....I think that you are over obsessing about this to be honest.

If you just don't like the name though, that is another matter.

I like the name, but if you do not, then you need to change it before she is one.

Fwiw, I don't think anyone will tease her - it is a very pretty name.

Thank you all for your kind comments, to be honest there is also an element of not liking the name as I thought I did when I put down it as an option. However, whenever I hear her brother and sister call her so lovingly all the time I worry that changing it will be hard for them. I am really obsessing about this. If it was just upto me to get used to a new name I would change it but I think of the others, don't think her dad will be too pleased to change it either :(

Surname not something like Peenar :) It's long and ends with the sound ee

I feel like this about DS1 name and he is 5!

However I think by 1 they are very much their name and it would be quite hard to totally change it.

Could you call her Emmy as in M for Mina or find a long name with the mina sound in it so family could still call her Mina but she would have a different official name for work and school?

I thought about that but didn't find a great choice, did think of Yasmina but not sure if its a better name? I also thought of putting Mina as a second name like Hana Mina or Amelie Mina? I feel like such a loser and a weak person for not sorting this out months ago! I try to please the rest of the family but end up unhappy :(

For what it's worth, I actually think she'll be really pleased with her name when she's older.There are tons of Amelies and quite a few Yasmins, at least she has something original.

A Hannah I was at school with got called "Fanny Hannah" Whatever you call her other children will be able to call her something cruel, that's just the nature of school sadly.

I think you just need to forget your concerns and enjoy your daughter, she has a lovely name, really.

After you've had a baby though it's really hard to feel strong and like you want to stand up for yourself. Don't feel like a loser

I regret giving my DS a foreign name but didn't really get it was a problem until he went to nursery and people thought it was a girls name. So way too late.

Sounds like you are sure you don't like it - Give a new first name, have Mina as middle. Dont push anyone in the family to change but as more and more new people call her the new name then it'll gradually transfer.

I think Mina is lovely. Simple, Elegant, feminine and works well in most languages. Imo it is much nicer than Amelie, which is a little overused these days.

I did not have a nickname at all at school. To the point where they called me 'Teflon - because nicknames just don't stick'

Mina is a lovely pretty name. I really don't think she'll get teased for it. Whilst it's not 'top 10' common I would not say it's unusual either.
