I need the best Scottish boys name in the world...

...to counteract the likelihood that his middle name will be -eek- Keith!!!

MN is after FIL (who is lovely, but whose name isn't, & who has no middle name!!).

First name needs to be Scottish as a family tradition. So I need the best, coolest, loveliest Scottish boy's name ever to distract from the awful MN!!

Thank you kindly. Really good ones please!!

Cameron or Connor.

pommedechocolat · 30/06/2011 09:03

Finlay? Is that scottish? I also thought Lachlan was Scottish and was going to suggest that.
Dougie as a nn for Douglas so then he's Douglas Keith as a 'proper' name but has a nice nn option?

birdofthenorth · 30/06/2011 09:39

Grin to Cameron Blair Keith :-)

Is Wyatt Scottish? That's a family name on my non-Scots side so could please everyone if I can prove it's Scots credentials!!

More please!

Struan is ace.

Also love Nairn, Fraser and someone I know called their son Elgin, which shouldn't work but kind of does.

birdofthenorth · 30/06/2011 09:51

My family are from Elgin so I think that would draw laughter! Also maiden name is that of a a well known Elgin wool company. Baby Elgin might but a bit like calling my baby Boden Smile

Elgin is in Moray though & I'm still considering Murray!

Kveta · 30/06/2011 10:27

Hamish, Lewis, or Struan - all excellent names!

Lollyheart · 30/06/2011 10:34

InMyPrime · 30/06/2011 11:13

Am pondering this myself at the moment as we're expecting a boy in October too.

Re Lachlan: the origin of the name is Gaelic (both Scottish and Irish Gaelic) because it's just the Gaelic word for Viking or a person from Scandinavia, even today in modern Irish. The Irish word is 'Lochlann' so with a Scottish pronunciation, it's 'Lachlan'. A good name for anyone with family from the far North of Scotland where there is a lot of Viking heritage!

You said you were thinking about Murray, bird? What about Moray, pronounced the same but spelt like the county to make it clear that you're connected to the area? I had a colleague once called Moray, pronounced Murray, who had family from Morayshire but grew up in England. I think it sounds great.

birdofthenorth · 30/06/2011 11:34

I thought about Moray but wondered if English folk would pronounce it to rhyme with Sorry or Hooray! We live South of the border so he might spend his whole life saying "it's Murray"?

I love it though, and all living relatives on that side would be frankly delighted!

Lennox is fab. I think there's a Lennox in the Scottish play.
Has Duncan been mentioned? I saw this mentioned on another thread. Due a revival I think.

IvyAndGold · 30/06/2011 14:45

DP is scottish, and as DD was born up there he vetoed anything that wasn't scottish

DD would have been aidan, but my favourite ever is angus, love that name. have convinced DP that it will be top of the boy's name list if we should have a DS Grin

mungo was mentioned the first time round. and kermit

razzlebathbone · 30/06/2011 15:06

Alban

freerangeeggs · 30/06/2011 16:13

Careful with Cailen prn Kay-len - I think that might be a mistake. I thik it might be a mix-up with Cailean, prn like Callum but with an -n (ka-lan), which is a lovely name actually. I think I've seen it spelled Callan.

I think most of the good ones have been suggested already. Someone mentioned Lennox, which I actually kind of like!

Lots of Scottish names are simply surnames. It's kind of a tradition in places and amongst certain families to pass on the mum's maiden name this way. Here are some ideas:

Baillie
Bowie
Brice
Calder (I love this one but it does sound like 'colder' in Scotland!)
Campbell
Christie (I LOVE this for a boy - know a friend of a friend with one)
Crawford (bit posh maybe!)
Cullen
Dallas (believe it or not this actually originated as a Scottish placename)
Elliott
Fife/Fyfe
Frazer
Glen
Gordon
Graham
Grant
Kelvin
Knox
Kyle
Laurie (love this too)
Lindsay (I know a teenage Lindsay and it really works on him)
Macaulay (a bit too Home Alone maybe)
Malcolm
Maxwell
Mitchell
Morton

I dunno, some of them are hideous but some are nice.

2madboys · 30/06/2011 16:17

Fergus (sings the blues) Wink

miamama09 · 30/06/2011 16:35

Callum, but Callum Keith not good. Also like Fraser.

birdofthenorth · 30/06/2011 17:36

I think Lennox Keith is my favourite by far so far!

Love your list though freerange, I like the family surnames as first names tradition

Fergus, Donald, Logan, Finley, Finbar, Angus, Hamish, Rory, Jamie, and , just to be annoying, Penelope grin
