Ezra or Loki?!

Both quite unusual names I know. Theory is choosing a name so that he is the only child of that name in his class at school. My 1st son is Jago and it really suits him. What do u think of these 2 names, I also like Phineas but worried it's a mouthful with our 3 sylable surname begining with N. Ideas welcome. Thanks.

Isn't Loki a demon or bringer of chaos? I wouldn't go there. Also it sounds like a fish.

I p[refer Phineas to eaither of those, but I'd choose Ezra over Loki.

Loki is a cool name, but probably not for a human baby. Ezra is better.

Ezra is great. I've not heard of Loki before. Both go well with Jago.

I'd avoid Phineas because he will inevitably end up as Finn (of which there are more than enough already imo)

Loki? He was the prince of misrule and chaos in Norse mythology. Serious trouble-maker.

Hmmm....come to think of it it would have been good for DS2. We already call him Mr Entropy.

I much prefer Ezra but, as a word of caution, I know of two under 5. That might be a blip, but I'd watch out in case it starts to become popular, as that's clearly something you want to avoid.

How about Idris? Lovely name and makes me think of Idris Elba. Mmm...

Would that b pronounced I-dris or Id-ris because my husband insists its the latter but i prefer the 1st one?

Loki sounds like locia, as in the bleeding after pregnancy! For that reason it would be a total no-no for me.

I don't agree with him needing to be the only one with a particular name in his class. You can't guarantee it, whatever you choose! There are boys with common names in DS's class - Jack, Josh, Sam, Toby etc and strangely there is only one of each - so you never can tell!

Don't forget that after he leaves school, he will no longer be in a class so it is irrelevant anyway - he will have to live the rest of his life with a bizarre name, which he could find very embarrassing.

You don't have to agree.

But the OP does and we are trying to come up with helpful comments that help her avoid the overly popular names. Yes, you can never know which names become popular in the future, but by avoiding the top 100 names you've got a better chance than choosing a name that is already popular.

No, it is not irrelevant. We've recently had some building works done and I swear every single tradesman seems to be called Steve - very confusing... it can remain a pain in adulthood to have a very popular name.

I like Ezra and think it goes well with Jago. Not heard of Loki before but would happily accept it.

greencaveman, names like Jack, Sam or Toby are very popular and are much more likely to have to share their names in class, sports groups or in adult life, which can indeed be a pain. There are so many lovely names out there, shouldn't we encourage more diversity - how boring life would be if we were all names Jack, Ella or Sam...

Idris is a Muslim name and is pronounced Id-ris.

Ezra is a Jewish name.

Wouldn't it be better to choose a name you know how to pronounce, from your own cultural heritage? Just a suggestion.

i think ezra is becoming more common and may be others in his class, it could go the same way as noah becoming more and more popular, they are similar kind of names afterall
not too keen on loki
i do like idris
phineas is okay but would probably get short to finn (or phin??) which is very popular at the moment

Ezra is without a doubt a boys name! Ezra was a prophet of the Old Testament, a priest who returned to Judah from exile in Babylon.

Ezra = boy's name, as in author Ezra Pound.

Idris is also Welsh isn't it? As in the mountain Cadair Idris, Chair of Idris?

I foresee a workforce of builders, plumbers and carpenters called all call Noah and Ezra in 25 years time!

I know a nearly-2-year-old Stephen - that really is unusual!
