Ezra or Loki?!

Both quite unusual names I know. Theory is choosing a name so that he is the only child of that name in his class at school. My 1st son is Jago and it really suits him. What do u think of these 2 names, I also like Phineas but worried it's a mouthful with our 3 sylable surname begining with N. Ideas welcome. Thanks.

Maybe I should change the post to: any name suggestions to go with Jago that aren't in the top 100 at the moment. No opinions nessecary.
You've already all found out I'm a bit of a self centered idiot for wanting a different name so let's hav some 'ordinary' ones.

i like Ezra, but not so keen on Loki

Piran is fab, although then people mihgt think you have a thing about Cornwall.

what about Lucien? Nico? Otto? Josiah?

thisisyesterday · 21/04/2011 22:35

Linus?
Asa?

spidookly · 21/04/2011 22:36

Two Cornish names would be nice, I think.

(Especially if you've been there on holiday once :o)

Or Welsh, or maybe other Celtic names? Gaelic or Irish or Breton?

spidookly · 21/04/2011 22:37

Piran is fab.

i slightly want another baby so i can call it Piran now

WMDinthekitchen · 21/04/2011 22:53

My hiking pole is a Leki - reminded me of Loki. How about Luka - one of the docs in ER (Kovac, played by Goran Visnjic)? Not sure about Ezra, original though.

Rhian82 · 21/04/2011 22:59

DH and I are both Welsh, as are all our families. DS's first and middle names are English. Is that okay?

[tongue very possibly in cheek]

Had a great-uncle called Idris as well?

ravenAK · 21/04/2011 23:17

Actually - on the recruitment/CVs thing:

If I were choosing between two candidates with identical qualifications - & if I were minded to entertain prejudices about background - I'd be jolly tempted to pick Chardonnay, not Charlotte, on the basis that she'd probably had to work harder to acquire those qualifications.

It'd be foolish & presumptive of me, obviously, but it'd make more sense than the other way round.

I think the argument in freakenomics is that people with odd, lower-class, names do worse in life not because of their name but because they have the type of parents that give them that name. He suggests that even if you changed that child's name from, say, jayden to William,it won't change their outcome. They will still have the same disadvantages of class and aptitude.

CoteDAzur · 22/04/2011 08:53

raven - I can assure you that the vast majority of HR directors and recruiters don't think that way.

OkeeDoeKee · 22/04/2011 08:57

Loki makes me think of lochia!! No, No, No, and it sounds made up too.

Not overly keen on Ezra either but at least it's a 'proper' name

SpringFollows · 22/04/2011 09:13

Ezekiel.

Thank you. [bows]

I quite like them both.

FWIW- we named our DS one of the most common old fashioned names ever. (After a beloved GF). A bit like Stephen. Everybody kind of raises their eyebrows as they expected us to go for somethuing unusual. But I am convinced he will be the only one in his class- and for several years as it is WAY out of favour. (Although one family member groaned and said it was 'boring' and calls him by his middle name instead which fucks me right off.)

Other names that might go with Jago

Quinn
Lucian

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 22/04/2011 11:25

Jago & Jared?

libelulle · 22/04/2011 11:46

I really like Ezra. Loki - I agree, sweet on a five year old but a bit odd for an adult.

I know a baby Elijah - in a few years there might be 6 in every class:)

Re cultural heritage etc...We chose two biblical names for our kids despite being non-religious. So shoot us.

Lauralastic · 22/04/2011 12:29

Quinn is cute, but not for a boy. My friend has a 7month old girl of that name. If Loki is a 'trouble/mischief maker name' I'm not really looking to call him Lucian, with connections ofthat name to the devil...
Has anyone any cornish boys names that don't end in N?

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 22/04/2011 12:33

Denzil

candleshoe · 22/04/2011 13:03

Quinn will get called Quim!

Oddly enough we have an Ezra at my PN group. I also know someone with a Loki and they loved it at first but it faded, so he's a Luke now, or Lukey :)

You know what it's like for unusual names, we've had a spate of different boys names [Stanley, Bruno, Gus, Jonah, Rohan], but the girls are all called Scarlett, Lily or Emily [well, apart from mine]. I still have to meet someone with a baby named the same as mine, I know it will happen. My name was unusual when we first moved to this area, the local primary school thought I was a boy until I turned up :) went to secondary school and I was one of 5 girls.

ednurse · 22/04/2011 19:47

Loki is my friends dogs name...
