Ezra or Loki?!

Both quite unusual names I know. Theory is choosing a name so that he is the only child of that name in his class at school. My 1st son is Jago and it really suits him. What do u think of these 2 names, I also like Phineas but worried it's a mouthful with our 3 sylable surname begining with N. Ideas welcome. Thanks.

Of your choices, Ezra, by miles.

FlankerMum · 20/04/2011 16:26

Idris is a Welsh name

Lauralastic · 20/04/2011 16:36

Thanks Tammytoby.
Greencaveman if you had gone to school with three other children all called the same name as you and then worked for 4 years with 4 people with the same name as you you would understand. (two at school even had the same middle name as me too!!)
My dh has an unusual name and he was the only one and still is the only one I know with the name.
I also work with children aged 4months to 5years and am hoping not to use any names of children I have looked after, Jago being one of them!
Originally it was a decision between Xander or Ezra, but then I realised how popular Xander was getting and decided I neede to change my mind...
Loki is the god of mischief/troublemaker but that really has no reflection on what a child with the name is going to be like does it? Its how you bring them up that affects them isn't it?? Unless you often get people saying to kids "Oh he has a troublemakers name so he is bound to be mischievous!" what like its an excuse...? Ha ha. Doesn't wash with me.
Yes a name I know how to pronounce CoteDAzur, does it actually matter what cultural heritage a name has?! Most names come from something or are derived from other languages etc does that mean I have to believe in them before I have the right to name a child it? Becasue I'm confused... How about Wolverine... I like comic books...

What's your DH's name? Is that a possibility? (I know opinion's divided on naming children after parents.)

peanutbutterontoast · 20/04/2011 17:38

Ezra is great, Idris is one of my favourite names - I know it as Welsh, but it is also used in Arab countries. Really don't like Loki I'm afraid.

CoteDAzur · 20/04/2011 19:37

Yes, actually, it does matter which cultural heritage a name is from. And it is a good idea to choose a name that is not so alien to you that you don't know how to pronounce it.

Most names are not "from somewhere else", unless you are referring to the Chardonnays and Baileys of late. Or the current trend to use Luca instead of Luke or Matteo instead of Matthew.

Believe me when I say that Italians are much amused by this trend in the UK.

CoteDAzur · 20/04/2011 19:39

Trillian - You might be thinking of Azra (Arabic) or Esra (Turkish), both of which are girls' names.

The Dutch have been nicking everybody else's forenames for years.

Lauralastic · 20/04/2011 21:22

I didn't actually suggest any names that I couldn't pronounce...

I thought Ezra might have been one of the brothers in Joseph, have just looked them up and it's not there but Asher and Gad are if you wanted any other unusual names

sorry, I don't like Loki, it's a chain of backpackers in South America where people who want to buy cocaine every night stay!

What about Ignacio, NN Iggy?

spidookly · 20/04/2011 21:26

"Loki is a cool name, but probably not for a human baby."

:o

Best baby names comment ever :o

Always good to have a few non-human baby names on the list, just in case :o

Ruthie32 · 20/04/2011 21:26

Lol Bluddy! Grin

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 20/04/2011 21:29

Right then ....

How about Enzo

spidookly · 20/04/2011 21:30

Who gives a shit what Italians are amused by?

People who get all uppity about cultural heritage and names give me a pain in my hole.

As long as you know how to pronounce a name, it doesn't matter what your bloodlines are.

And you can find out how to pronounce it by asking someone of that cultural heritage. I have no problem helping non-Irish people pronounce Irish names properly if they want to know. And unless there are sounds I know they'll struggle with I never try to dissuade them from choosing one.

Ezra and Jago sound good together. I don't like Loki.

Donki · 20/04/2011 21:31

Surely the Arabic one is pronounced so that the second 'I' is long - Idrees, not like the Welsh Idris?

Donki · 20/04/2011 21:34

I like Idris (Welsh) version, but really wouldn't call a boy Loki - too many people know the story of the God of mischief. It would make me look twice and think 'poor child' if I saw it in my class register....

But at least you aren't going to call them by the day on which they were born (I kid you not)

ravenAK · 20/04/2011 21:35

I'm going to buck the trend & say that I think Loki is rather cool (it's the name of a friend's ds, but unlikely to ever be mainstream...)

Ezra's nice but a bit...dull. There are so many other OT names that have become trendy in recent years (Jacob, Isaac, etc) that you might find his playgroup in a couple of years has 5 little Ezras.

hester · 20/04/2011 21:36

Ezra is a fine name and definitely for boys.

CoteDAzur · 20/04/2011 21:40

No, it's pronounced Id-riss.

WestYorkshirePudding · 20/04/2011 21:50

I love Idris! Pity I already have two boys and will not be adding to my brood...

What about Kobe? Sounds great with Jago.

Lauralastic · 20/04/2011 21:55

Lol Bluddy!
Well said Spidookly!
Definitely open to other suggestions. Dh is Alexis, known mainly as Lex. His sister is Tanith, which I believe is associated with the film "Devil Rides Out" (She's quite a nice person actually.)
Oric and Casper are possibilities too...

Phineas and Ezra are both really nice. A problem you might have with Loki is that it's one of those cutesy names that is endearing when the child is a mischievous 5 year old who runs riot and causes havoc but is not quite so fitting when Loki is a grown-up scientist or policeman or business owner or whatever and wants to be taken seriously. It sounds more like a nickname. Kind of like celebs that call their children Rocco or Bluebell etc.

If you're into Nordic themes, why not go for a modern-day Nordic name? If you're worried about originality you could go for one of the more unusual ones e.g. Pontus, Viggo, Sigge, Sindri etc.
