Is it pronounced, 'Loo-is' or 'Loo-e'

Grateful for clarification

Loo-ee

ninah · 07/04/2011 17:23

either. I prefer Lou-ee the French way. but be prepared for Lewis

Fimbo · 07/04/2011 17:24

Either but prefer Lewis

flowery · 07/04/2011 17:25

Loo-ee. If you want Loo-is spell it Lewis.

ninah · 07/04/2011 17:29

if you spell it louis you still get lewis. a lot.

Bunbaker · 07/04/2011 17:29

Having studied French I would automatically assume it was pronounced Loo-ee, as in Louis Armstrong or St Louis.

BetchaByGolly · 07/04/2011 17:31

I prefer Loo-ee, but I know lots of people see it as Lewis.

usualsuspect · 07/04/2011 17:31

TheVisitor · 07/04/2011 17:31

longislandicetea · 07/04/2011 17:32

To me Louis = Loo-ee
Lewis = Loo-iss

CointreauVersial · 07/04/2011 17:35

Either. It's a French name so correctly it is Loo-ee.

But if you want to pronounce it Lewis, why not spell it Lewis? Avoids confusion. I know a "Louis-pronounced-Lewis" and everyone gets it wrong at first, which irritates the hell out of his mum.

MsChanandlerBong · 07/04/2011 17:37

Louis Walsh, Louis Armstrong, Louis Vuitton, Louis Theroux - all make me think that loo-ee is the most commonly accepted pronunciation.

Susiewho · 07/04/2011 17:39

Lou-ee.

ninah · 07/04/2011 17:41

well I thought everyone thought like you lot when I named ds, never occured to me you could pronounce Louis any other way than Lou-ee. But live and learn!

Ivegotmrbitey · 07/04/2011 17:42

I'm very glad to have come across this thread!
I would say Loo-ee, but because this is a name we are thinking about for our baby. I don't want it to be pronounced Lewis so I think I may go with spelling it Louie instead.

Actually, I think that Louie loks a bit odd typed and I am wondering if I may have just made that spelling up! Oh dear!

Anyway, sorry for thread high jack Smile

Bunbaker · 07/04/2011 17:42

usualsuspect I wonder if it is a regional thing that where you live Louis is pronounced Lewis?

MsChanandlerBong · 07/04/2011 17:43

Louie Spence is spelt Louie... not sure if you want to use him as a role model for your preferred name though!

usualsuspect · 07/04/2011 17:46

Bunbaker It might be ...but I have heard it pronounced loo -ie as well ..its just the 3 boys I know of called louis , its pronounced loo-is

Tuggy · 07/04/2011 17:58

It is Loo-ee

Lewis is Loo-iss

ninah · 07/04/2011 18:15

tuggy I agree but I am sick of correcting people, so not everyone else does!
