CJ2010 · 07/04/2011 17:22

Is it pronounced, 'Loo-is' or 'Loo-e'

Grateful for clarification

Folicacid · 07/04/2011 23:39

Loo-is to me

greenzebra · 08/04/2011 06:58

its Loo-ee

Loo -is is spelt Lewis my brother has this name, and I prefer it, he gets called the nn loo-ee aswell, so maybe Lewis has more scope for nn.

WiiUnfit · 08/04/2011 21:32

I went to school with a Louie - total shit. Angry

I would say Louis is "Loo-ee" though.

krisskross · 08/04/2011 21:41

its not lewis-its pronounced loo-ee- sorry to rant but why dont people know this? my son gets called lewis all the time Angry ! and often people spell is Louie- is that even a name??

One of my friends was shocked when i told her this and was surprised people didnt know their history.....

Apologies- i seem to have drifted over into an AIBU thread......

Bunbaker · 08/04/2011 22:21

krisskross - lack of education maybe?

usualsuspect · 08/04/2011 22:22

lack off education?

err ok then

natto · 09/04/2011 00:07

Louis is Loo-ee
Lewis is Loo-iss
My friend used the spelling Louie rather than Louis to avoid the pronunciation problem

usualsuspect · 09/04/2011 00:13

My louis is pronounced loo-is

[thicko]

scottishmummy · 09/04/2011 00:19

if you want loo-is call him lewis
louis=loo-ee
and no it isnt either way wasnt king lewis of france.just folk cant get it right

Clary · 09/04/2011 00:26

I would say it Loo-ee (as in the French name).
If I wanted Loo-iss then I would spell it Lewis.

That said, there is a kid at my school called Louis who insists on Loo-iss.

MajesticScallop · 09/04/2011 15:49

Ah but to lots of people "Louis" looks like a typo where someone has missed the "E" off Louise. The Louis I know even got one or two pink congrats cards when he was born because people assumed there was a typo in the birth announcement text.

MajesticScallop · 09/04/2011 15:51

PS that was a response to cat64's comment btw

BertieBasset · 09/04/2011 15:56

I may think Loo-is as my mother's family is from St Louis in Missouri, pronounced Loo-is. Agree though that it should be Loo-ee. So no help at all there from me

EauRouge · 09/04/2011 16:14

I've heard it pronounced as Lewis in N American but in the UK I've only ever heard Loo-ee. Lewis is a totally different name.

MillsAndDoom · 09/04/2011 19:32

What natto said

Bunbaker · 09/04/2011 19:38

"Ah but to lots of people "Louis" looks like a typo where someone has missed the "E" off Louise. The Louis I know even got one or two pink congrats cards when he was born because people assumed there was a typo in the birth announcement text."

Have none of these people never heard of Louis Pasteur, Louis Vuitton, Louis Armstrong, countless kings of France then?

Hatterbox · 10/04/2011 20:33

Loo-ee

Louis being pronounced as Lewis is a bug bear of mine, it shows a lack of knowledge.

KirstyJC · 10/04/2011 20:39

Loo-ee. As in all those kings of France, Louis Theroux, Louis de Bernieres etc....

My DS is called Louis and often gets called Loo-is though. Sad. I've even had people ask me why we misspelled it if you don't pronounce the s....!

EllAEllO · 10/04/2011 20:42

Loo-ee.

Great name. Grin

scottishmummy · 10/04/2011 20:43

if you cant pronounce louis properly i think youre a bit daft, and just because a minority do it doesn't make it any more acceptable

EllAEllO · 10/04/2011 21:12

If it needs to be spelt 'wrong' for people to pronounce it right, I prefer Lewie to Louie.
Not that anyone asked Wink

lozzabeth · 10/04/2011 22:54

Definately loo-ee but then I have a DD called Lois and that has bamboozled many including our Doctor who called her Louis!!!

scottishmummy · 10/04/2011 22:59

as in low-is?nice like it

KingofHighVis · 10/04/2011 23:05

My grandad was louis - pronounced lewis

As with Paris, I would assume that and English child would use the English pronunciation.

scottishmummy · 10/04/2011 23:12

can use wrong pronunciation, doesn't make it big or clever or right

just because a sizeable minority get something wrong doesn't make it right

isnt lewis vuitton, king lewis of france, lewis pasteur
