Which perfectly nice names do you really dislike for no reason you can put your finger on?

I don't mean names that you think are:

'posh' (Fenella)
'chavvy' (Kayden)
'princessey' (Annabelle)
'hypheney' (Ellie-Mae)
'illiterate' (Mykal)
'ubiquitous' (Ruby)
'celeby' (Britney)
and so forth.

I mean names which for absolutely no reason you can put your finger on, you really really dislike. They don't come with associations or baggage, you just don't like it.

The test is, if you can say: "I don't like it because...(it reminds me of a horrible kid in primary school/it's really dated/ I know fifteen of them)" then it doesn't count. There has to be absolutely no justifiable (or unjustifiable) reason for your dislike of it.

For me: Hazel.

I just think it's really a horrid name.

OK.. First of all I do have to say, if I loathe the name, I obviously do NOT think it is perfectly good!

That being said, my closest qualifiers are:

Phoebe
Priscilla
Harlow
Lucy
Alice
Mary
Jane
Francesca (I do have a negative association, but I also truly just hate the name... The sound grates on my nine
Evelyn

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 11/04/2011 04:20

Phoebe.

Why is it so popular? It sounds really whiny.

The original question was "which perfectly nice names do you really dislike for no reason you can put your finger on?", but in all honesty, if I dislike a name then I have a reason for it!

So here are my dislike lists:

Chloeused
Amelia
Isabel/Isabelle/Isabella/Isobel
Phoebe
Jessica
Isla
Olivia (yet I love Olive)
Lexie/Lexy/Lexi
Caitlin pronounced as kate-lyn (fine when pronounced one of the proper Irish ways though)
Lily
Poppy
Molly
Scarlett
Freya
Ava
Mia
Ruby
Leah
Victoria
Natalie
Natasha
Ashleigh/Ashley (fine on a boy though)
Bethany (used to love this, but now I keep hearing it pronounced as 'beff-nee' by people unable to use English properly, so now I loathe it)
Samantha
Roxanne
Georgia (love Georgina and Georgiana though)
Alisha/Aleesha
Abbie
Abigail
Lola
Sienna
Ella
Ellie

Alfie
Liam
Archie
Lewis
Callum
Cameron
Ethan
Connor
Shane
Daniel
George
Harvey
Blake
Xavier
Austin
Jenson
Gareth
Gavin
Declan
Kyle

That first one should just say 'Chloe' - I appear to have typed in the wrong placed at one point - oops!

debrs4 · 11/04/2011 11:37

I can't abide Amy, Emily, Amelia, Emelia. All hideously old-fashioned and too soppy for words. But my pet hate is anything too popular. I work in a secondary school and every year when the new year sevens arrive there will be a name that at least ten of the (admittedly extremely chavvy) local parents have used. For your interest/nausea: Year 11 Amy, Year 10 Skye, Year 9 Chloe, Year 8 Courtney, Year 7 Daniel. Hideous every one (as are most of the kids themselves)

hugs calum to chest. don't listen to them son.

zozzle · 12/04/2011 13:55

I dislike most names if I'm honest.

However, I love Ruth and Miriam - IMO nothing ugly about them - both beautiful ancient names - much better than the "granny revival" names that are popular at the moment, many of which don't date back much further than the victorian era.

As you can see I like names that have lots of history to them.

And you teach why?

qumquat · 12/04/2011 17:04

Kitty
Maisie
Poppy
Millie

But I guess there is a 'cutesy' pattern to those.

Louise
Michelle
