Which perfectly nice names do you really dislike for no reason you can put your finger on?

I don't mean names that you think are:

'posh' (Fenella)
'chavvy' (Kayden)
'princessey' (Annabelle)
'hypheney' (Ellie-Mae)
'illiterate' (Mykal)
'ubiquitous' (Ruby)
'celeby' (Britney)
and so forth.

I mean names which for absolutely no reason you can put your finger on, you really really dislike. They don't come with associations or baggage, you just don't like it.

The test is, if you can say: "I don't like it because...(it reminds me of a horrible kid in primary school/it's really dated/ I know fifteen of them)" then it doesn't count. There has to be absolutely no justifiable (or unjustifiable) reason for your dislike of it.

For me: Hazel.

I just think it's really a horrid name.

Pearl. Truely so awful it makes me want to vomit.

There's a little girl in DS's class who's about 6 called Pearl and everytime I see her I feel so sorry for her being saddled with such an awful name. totally irrational I know.

LiquoriceLila · 03/04/2011 10:33

William George Matthew

Grace Olivia Katie Elizabeth ( think every single person on MN loves it except me )

I've just remembered how much I hate Abigail. Abby is less bad - though still not keen - but Abigail is truly vile.

This will be a long list.

Clementine.I really don't understand why this name is so popular with Mumsnetters. It's awful.

Tabitha. I hate the sound,and it's a cat's name.

Kitty. It makes me think of a burlesque dancer.

Lola.It's a stripper's name.

Pearl. It's just another ugly name, and not one I can imagine on a child.

Ruby.Awful.

Stanley. Why would you call your child this?

Frank.I really despise this name.It has to be one of the ugliest sounds.I actually shudder when I hear it.I can't imagine such an ugly name on a baby or young child.

Archie. Why was this ever popular?

Margaret/Maggie.Again an ugly sound.

Elliot. Wet and just generally terrible.

Barney.It's an annoying purple dinosaur,a dog's name,eand again,very wet.

I've probably alienated half of MN now.

LetThereBeRock · 03/04/2011 11:28

Also.
Ellie
Ava
Prudence. Why the hell do so many people like this name on MN? I can't imagine looking at my newborn, and going,'We'll call her Prudence'. I wouldn't even do that to my cat.
Stephen.Another name that literally makes me shudder.

violethill · 03/04/2011 11:46

Ruby
Molly/Millie
Ellie/Ella
Josh
Alfie

Ugh!

notso · 03/04/2011 11:57

Loads of names just make me think of something horrible for no reason.
Lisa, Doreen, Mark, Grace, Malcom, Neville, Lee, Gemma, Nicole, Cai, Cole, Patrick, Christopher, Ella, Luke, Michael, Henry, Clive, Noel, Nicky, Lindsay, I could easily go on.

DD's name seems to be popular or unpopular so far, and DS1's, DS2, DH and my Dad have all been listed.

missmiss · 03/04/2011 12:55

Cordelia. I don't know why, because I'm generally a massive fan of posh multi-syllabic girls' names (Clementine, Cicely etc) but Cordelia is not nice.

vaginiasmonalogue · 03/04/2011 12:57

Lydia
Noah

I don't like capital Gs, so anything beginning with G.
How's that for irrational?

NotJustKangaskhan · 03/04/2011 13:12

James. No idea why, and I have no issue with Jamie, James just makes my nose twitch.

John/Johnny spelled with the h - but Jon is lovely to me.

Any of the "Mad" names (like Madeline) - I can not see the appeal of names with the work 'mad' or similar words in it.

Wafflenose · 03/04/2011 13:58

This is probably going to make me deeply unpopular because they are very well used names:
Oliver, Olivia, Oscar (maybe it's something about the letter O?), Lydia, Archie - don't know why I don't like them, think they are just a bit hard and spiky!

However, I've found my children's names on this thread and am not insulted in the slightest!

Oh, and anything beginning with 'Sha' like Shanarra, Shanice, Shane, Shania, etc etc

smother · 03/04/2011 14:19

oh yes and also:
Felicity
Celia
Gabriella (nn Gabby)

banjomanjo · 03/04/2011 19:30
