Which perfectly nice names do you really dislike for no reason you can put your finger on?

I don't mean names that you think are:

'posh' (Fenella)
'chavvy' (Kayden)
'princessey' (Annabelle)
'hypheney' (Ellie-Mae)
'illiterate' (Mykal)
'ubiquitous' (Ruby)
'celeby' (Britney)
and so forth.

I mean names which for absolutely no reason you can put your finger on, you really really dislike. They don't come with associations or baggage, you just don't like it.

The test is, if you can say: "I don't like it because...(it reminds me of a horrible kid in primary school/it's really dated/ I know fifteen of them)" then it doesn't count. There has to be absolutely no justifiable (or unjustifiable) reason for your dislike of it.

For me: Hazel.

I just think it's really a horrid name.

don't worry, my ds is named too.
although is calum as hated as callum is or do we get away with it?

Ponders · 03/04/2011 22:14

I don't think spellings affect anybody's loathing of a name as a name, nevergoogle

bad luck Grin

MadBanners · 03/04/2011 22:17

None of them names you really get now.

I am always surprised when i hear someone has named a child something i think of as a typical 80's name....Catherine, Simon, Stephen, Emma etc..

melpomene · 03/04/2011 22:25

I loathe the names Nora, Noreen and Maureen, but like Laura and Lauren which have a similar sound.

drat.

he is a thug btw.

ValiumSoltera · 03/04/2011 22:43

My name, both my children's names (well 1 spelt differently and the other is a long/short version of basically the same name) and my friends' children's names (including my goddaughter's) are all on this thread.

ValiumSoltera · 03/04/2011 22:44

Ponders I disagree. I love Juliet and Vivien, but not Juliette and Vivian/Vivienne. I like Isobel more than Isabel. I like Elizabeth more than Elisabeth. Emer more than Eimear, I could go on but I'd bore you.

Ponders · 03/04/2011 22:47

but if you only heard the name, you wouldn't know how it was spelt, Valium?

Icoulddoitbetter · 03/04/2011 22:48

George, and I know loads of them too.

ValiumSoltera · 03/04/2011 22:50

That's true! but I mean from the perspective of choosing it! Also, people might disbelieve me, but when I meet an Isabel/Isobel/Isabelle I can tell how it's spelt from looking at the mother Grin Wink. It's a nerdy skill I grant you and I can't put it on my cv, but trust me, I know.

Three people suggested Miriam to me when I was pregnant with DC2. One of them fairly insistently ("Oh it's lovely! And you could use Mim as a nickname!") In the end I explained that I would rather call a child Fuckface it really didn't appeal to me.

Honestly though, Miriam? Three people I tell you - not just one random lunatic. So I guess it must just be me Confused
