I'm looking for a name that works in both French and English and I really like Lydia.
Not sure what 'type' of name it is though (if that makes sense). Does it sound weird/pretentious/old-fashioned etc.

Let me know!

I think it's a lovely 'type' of name! Traditional in the sense that it's a Biblical one but not over-used.

FattyArbuckel · 30/03/2011 19:44

love it

franke · 30/03/2011 19:46

I think it's pretty. And not naff Smile

anonacfr · 30/03/2011 19:46

I do like it but I can't think of anyone named Lydia- either in celebs or people I know or people I went to school/university with.
Which is why I find it hard to place.

I basically want something quite timeless and classic (again if that makes sense).

Love it.

posey · 30/03/2011 19:48

Love it. It is well enough known that you won't have people saying "what?" each time you say it, but not overly popular (she won't be in a classfull!)
Just lovely and pretty.

Firawla · 30/03/2011 19:50

I like it, no it doesn't sound weird pretentious or old fashioned its nice

pilates · 30/03/2011 20:17

Really nice name, a name that suits both young and old.

longislandicetea · 30/03/2011 20:20

I know a beautiful and very sweet little girl called Lydia which has made me like the name even more.

PorkChopSter · 30/03/2011 20:22

I love it.

LetThereBeRock · 30/03/2011 20:22

It's horrid.

ThisFeelsWeird · 30/03/2011 20:23

I love it but....

Lydia Chlamydia and Lydia the tattooed lady would bother me slightly.

I wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't specifically said you wanted honest opinions!

Thomcat · 30/03/2011 20:24

Every time I hear it I also hear "Lydia, Lydia, you gave me Chlamydia" in my head.
Sorry!

Thomcat · 30/03/2011 20:25

Opps, I see I'm not the only one who associaties it with that either. Sorry.

said · 30/03/2011 20:28

It's timeless and classic. I do like Lydie as well though - the French version

Vallhala · 30/03/2011 20:28

Lydia the tattooed lady...

I know a Lydia and, lovely as she is, she's a loud, rugby mad 40-something so Lydia isn't a name I associate with sweet little girls.

I'd definitely be put off by the chance of my DD being called Chlamydia as she got older too. :o

SugarSkyHigh · 30/03/2011 20:28

I love it - hadnt heard of the chlamydia rhyme til now!

lottiejenkins · 30/03/2011 20:30

triskaidekaphile · 30/03/2011 20:31

Lydia keeps my toothbrush in her apartment and she never complains.
Well, hardly ever. And then jokingly she says?
Boy, it's been so long since I held you, I nearly gave you up for dead. I nearly gave you up for dead. I nearly gave you up for dead.

Lydia, Lydia how come you understand?
I can offer you nothing at all. This is more than I had planned.
Lydia, Lydia I am at your command, at least until morning comes,
then, I must be off again.

Lydia, you know I always talk about making conscious decisions, about running my own life. Well, maybe I'm fooling myself. It's a role I like to play.
Because more often than not I'm down here on the corner. I'm sorry I woke you. Do you feel like some company? Babe, I need a place to stay.

Lydia, Lydia how come you understand?
I can offer you nothing at all. This is more than I had planned.
Lydia, Lydia I am at your command, at least until morning comes,
then, I must be off again.

I sleep with a woman who thinks I'm a child. Well, maybe I am. No, that wouldn't surprise anyone. I suspect that much is true.
But, Lydia, if you only knew how much I love you. Did you know that I love you? It's the best that I can do.

Lydia, Lydia how come you understand?
I can offer you nothing at all. This is more than I had planned.

Ladies and gentleman - I give you Dean Friedman...

MainlyMaynie · 30/03/2011 20:34

I couldn't purely because Lydia Bennett in Pride and Prejudice is so awful!

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 30/03/2011 20:38

I LOVE it, I have a Lydia so am just a teeny bit biased Grin
