I'm looking for a name that works in both French and English and I really like Lydia.
Not sure what 'type' of name it is though (if that makes sense). Does it sound weird/pretentious/old-fashioned etc.

Let me know!

All the Love for Lydias ... that was long ago on telly! My Lydia was once in changing rooms at swimming with a Russian Lydia in her twenties, and a toddler Lydia who was born in China but adopted by a Canadian. It is amazingly international. (Mine would have chosen to be Megan Fiona though, which would be stupid with our surname!) I have only ever heard the Chlamydia thing here!

Trinaluce · 31/03/2011 13:48

I LOVE it but it's one of my colleague's names (not a boss but higher up the ladder than me) and I KNOW I'd never hear the end of it from my equal-ranking colleagues if I used it Grin

cosmicdancer · 31/03/2011 15:15

My DD is Lydia Grace, so of course I am biased. I think it's a very classic name and my DD likes being called it. She sometimes gets called Lydie, Lyd and her MSN name is Lydz which she thinks looks cool. I think it's a very ageless name - if you like it, go for it.

GRW · 31/03/2011 16:34

I love it, and it was on my short list for my DD.

washngo · 31/03/2011 18:52

Oh yes I also have always been Lyds too - only to my school friends which started when I was a teenager.

BendyBob · 31/03/2011 19:38

Lovely. Makes me think of the book Love for Lydia.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 31/03/2011 19:42

Cosmic dancer my lydie is a Lydia Grace too! Have 3 dd's and hers is my absolutely favourite name

BikeRunSki · 31/03/2011 19:50

Does it work in French? Beware of Lydia/Lydie. My French/Eng lives in France Nephew has an English name that is almost the same in French, but everyone uses the French version of anyway. Drives my sister up the wall. His younger sister has a name that is exactly the same in both languages.

Panzee · 31/03/2011 19:53

I love Lydia, and I love Lydia the Tattooed Lady too. Go for it!

breadandhoney · 31/03/2011 19:54

A "different" name - i don't know of any, of any age. But I like it. Sounds beautiful in French too.

EldonAve · 31/03/2011 19:55

love it

UndiscoveredApprentice · 31/03/2011 20:13

Love it (and I love the Dean Friedman song)

stleger · 31/03/2011 21:48

My dd1's middle name is Grace - she is 17 and MIL was horrified as it wasn't used much then, unlike now. So mine got the 'other middle name' - Rose! It wasn't in vogue 14 years ago... I'm still glad we used it.

SolarPanel · 02/04/2011 10:59

I like it :)

catinboots · 02/04/2011 11:06

Associated with Chlamydia.

When our students take chlamydia tests they get a text back saying "ALL CLEAR, LOVE LYDIA"

Often GUM clinics are called The Lydia Clinic

Emelene · 02/04/2011 15:46

I like the name Lydia. It's pretty but not over the top!

belgo · 02/04/2011 15:48

It just sounds like a fancier version of Linda.

MardyBra · 02/04/2011 15:59

Doesn't remind me of Linda at all. And much much nicer imo.

BeanaReena · 10/04/2011 23:42

I love it. It's my favourite girls name at the moment :)

LovelyJudy · 10/04/2011 23:44

For some reason it makes me think of the 70s. i think it's just because my friend's big sister was called that. it's pretty though.

beanlet · 10/04/2011 23:47

Classic and pretty and not at all overused - big thumbs up from me

CocktailQueen · 10/04/2011 23:51

I love it - a childhood friend was called Lydia. pretty name :)

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 11/04/2011 00:24

It's DD's name, so it's a 'we like it' from this house Grin

We picked it because of the Greek connections, and because it was nice girls name that isn't too pretty. It's always felt like a good strong name.

mrsdaz · 11/04/2011 13:30

i know a baby Lydia and shes really sweet and the name suits her, her sister is Lyla

serin · 11/04/2011 22:24

DD has a 14yr old friend who gets the chlamydia thing all the time .

She wishes she was called Kate. Hmm
