I'm looking for a name that works in both French and English and I really like Lydia.
Not sure what 'type' of name it is though (if that makes sense). Does it sound weird/pretentious/old-fashioned etc.

Let me know!

See, Dean Friedman, although owner of a vile beard, did write a beautiful song there. Always consider if there is a decent song around with future child's name in it.

Personally I think it's ghastly. To me it's a very drippy name. But each to their own, you'll never get everyone agreeing

vaginiasmonalogue · 30/03/2011 20:44

It's a bit prissy for my liking...

takewhatyoucan · 30/03/2011 20:48

I never thought of lydia chlamidya, but lydia does make me think of a goats name!

thinkingkindly · 30/03/2011 20:54

I love it, and it was on my list for DD2.

My name is Lydia and I love it. Never ever has anyone said anything about chlamydia rhyming with my name! Always felt really happy to tell people my name - never embarrassed in the slightest. I actually would use it if it wasn't my name as that would be a little odd!

ValiumSoltera · 30/03/2011 21:23

I love it! I like that it's been in the top 100 but hasn't risen sharply at all. It's kind of steady in its position. (if popularity is an issue for you). My dd was almost a Lydia.

ValiumSoltera · 30/03/2011 21:24

As for what 'type' of name it is, I'd say it's the same type of name as Imogen Grin. Does that help at all!?

weimy · 30/03/2011 21:28

I think of Lydia languish from 'The Rivals' , lovely name x

GwendolineMaryLacey · 30/03/2011 21:36

I love it. It was our reserve name for DD and it will definitely be the name of the next dd if there is one.

mrmistoffelees · 30/03/2011 21:45

I like it, it's my neices name. She's a dinky, blond haired, blue eyed 2 year old and it really suits her.

stleger · 30/03/2011 21:48

My Lydia is named after HE Bates book Love for Lydia. I love the Dean Friedman song, good old Dean!

washngo · 30/03/2011 21:59

Ooh yes the HE Bates book gave my mum the idea too!

COCKadoodledooo · 30/03/2011 22:01

I know one and she's a lovely girl.

When I hear it though I always think 'teapot' because way back in the 80s my wind-up merchant Dad told me that was the surname of the dance teacher in Fame..

I love it. My favourite teenager is called Lydia.

bibbitybobbityhat · 30/03/2011 22:13

Fab name. Great choice.

Achneinmeinbein · 30/03/2011 22:38

I am a Lydia! I've been told it's a nice name all my life and the only thing I don't like about it is people misreading it as Lynda. I quite like the tattoed lady association and noone's ever made much of chlamydia rhyme. I did used to have a humanities teacher who sang Lydia oh Lydia the encyclopydia at me a lot though...
I get called Lyds a lot if that wld annoy you as a nn

cory · 30/03/2011 22:47

At least one Lydia in dd's year and nobody seems to think it at all a strange name; in fact, dd may well know several Lydias (dd is 14).

triskaidekaphile · 30/03/2011 22:51

:) Trumpton. I know (of) an extremely fab teenager called Lydia too.

muminthemiddle · 30/03/2011 23:01

Stleger I have loved the name ever since the tv programme "Love for Lydia."
It is my dd'smiddle name and I love it.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 31/03/2011 12:04

I love Lydia, I really wanted it for DD but DH said it was too posh and too thin. How a name can be too thin is beyond me.
I still wish I'd called her that, although when I've mentioned it to her she said she doesn't like it.
