Do you love your name?

When i was growing up, i hated my name because i was the only child in my family without an english name, i made up names for myself and yearned for one, my dad felt pity on me after much threateningbegging from me that he gave me one when i was 7, i was not impressed[
there were 3 girls i already knew with the same name but it was the best catholic name he could find, i shortened it, it suits me and i love it,used it from that day

As for my traditional name, it happens to be one of the most beautiful unusual names in my country and my father couldn't have done better, and now that i live in europe it is exotic, i thanked my dad last time i saw him,so, if you had to choose your own name, what would you have named yourself?if you are happy with the one you have,fine..

I love Caitlin!
I may have spelled it differently, but has been on my list of girls names. I think it's so pretty.

UrsulaBuffay · 19/02/2011 08:14

I hate mine, I once saw it described as the female equivalent of Darren Hmm

MumInBeds · 19/02/2011 08:16

I'm an Elizabeth but I go by Beth most of the time. I love it, I find Elizabeth to be a bit posh for me and I did get teased about that when I was a child (in an inner-city high poverty, high crime area) but I do like being a Beth.

bilblio · 19/02/2011 08:21

I've always loved my name (Celeste). I do have to spell it all the time, but I love being unusual. I've only ever met one other so it's nice to know if I hear my name it's me being talked about. :)
Most people use my full name. My family and some childhood friends call me Este. My friends and family from Lancashire/Liverpool call me Cel.

I have a very unusual surname too but at work I often get away with just telling people my first name. I'll not get mixed up with anyone else.

teobaldo are you me? There were 5 of us with the same name in primary school and now at work there is less than 50 staff and there are 4 of us.

Don't like my name though. Don't like the way is sounds and don't like the lack of originality.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/02/2011 10:30

Maltesers - my DD1 has two of the names on your list!

I don't mind my name. It's fairly unusual and I always have to spell it. I do prefer the long version, but have never used it, and was only called it when I was naughty by my mother.

My grandmother used to call me Sandra. My great grandmother used to call me Christina. My name is neither of those... Confused

FriggFRIGG · 19/02/2011 12:27

my name is okay,i mean its not awful...its just so dull ....

it's louise.

everyone shortens it to lou.

boosmummie · 19/02/2011 15:37

Why thank you SilveryMoon, I just hated the fact that nobody could ever spell it, pronounce it and that I was the only one anywhere that I knew of (bar Mrs Dylan Thomas). I was amused when my eldest started school 13 years ago to find that there were 4 Caitlins running around and for the first time in my life when the name was called it wasn't for me. There seem to be a lot around now of all sorts of spellings too.

activix · 19/02/2011 16:01

I called my DS Jared. Born early under ECS so I phoned folk to tell them. Got 15 cards with 13 different spellings! Was told by family (semi-joking)to give him a 'sensible' middle name to avoid this. As soon as he went to 2dry he called himself J@zz (spelt like that!). Go figure!

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 19/02/2011 16:15

Mine's been mentioned a couple of times (starts F) and I used to like it but then I moved abroad and noone can say it. Married a Frenchman and it's pronounced the same as the country here so I'm forever saying 'avec un s' and people will keep making jokes about it!

truthisinthewine · 19/02/2011 16:35

My name is Rebecca. I love it.

CharlieBoo · 19/02/2011 19:11

I really like my name now, I wanted something much more exotic when I was growing up, but I am not aged by my name which is great. I could be 75, 31 Grin or 12. It's Lucy by the way.

youngjoly · 19/02/2011 19:23

I hate my full name. Its a 1970s name, and dare I say it, a bit chavvy. I inwardly cringe when people call me by my full name. To add insult to injury my mum was going to use a very nice, similarish sounding classic name, but in the end decided it didn't go so well with my maiden surname. Grr, It would have gone better with my married surname!

Hence, I never use it and now have a shortened version which I always use.

Further, both my daughters have names that can be shortened at least 4 different ways, so if they don't like their names, they have options Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/02/2011 19:25

I love my name. Don't know anyone of my age group with it.

It's Jacqueline. (hate it when people pronounce it Jac-koo-leen though!)

My name suddenly seems to have come back into fashion - although I pronounce it differently from how it is spelt and how most people assume it is pronounced so have spent my entire life correcting people. I knew about two growing up - and now I see it popping up all over the place.

It's Clara.

I LOVE Celeste.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/02/2011 19:37

Ooook then. Is it not past your bedtime little boy?

FriggFRIGG · 19/02/2011 19:38
Confused
