Do you love your name?

When i was growing up, i hated my name because i was the only child in my family without an english name, i made up names for myself and yearned for one, my dad felt pity on me after much threateningbegging from me that he gave me one when i was 7, i was not impressed[
there were 3 girls i already knew with the same name but it was the best catholic name he could find, i shortened it, it suits me and i love it,used it from that day

As for my traditional name, it happens to be one of the most beautiful unusual names in my country and my father couldn't have done better, and now that i live in europe it is exotic, i thanked my dad last time i saw him,so, if you had to choose your own name, what would you have named yourself?if you are happy with the one you have,fine..

SoH is it the same name as that film a fish called?

That is an excellent name, I love it

Odelay · 18/02/2011 20:11

Ive Bern through peaks and troughs with mine. When I was little in wales I was the only one I knew and a bit ostracised because it was 'posh'. I grew to quite like it in my teens but then it had a popullarity explosion and now I hear all sorts yelling it in tesco

JemimaMop · 18/02/2011 20:30

I didn't like my name (Delyth) when I was growing up, but I think it suits me as an adult.

I have always thought my name is OK. I have been called Mel as a nn since I was a teenager. If I am ever introduced to someone new as Mel they always presume that it is short for Melanie but its actually Melissa. I definately prefer Melissa to Melanie, although half my friends now call me Melanie as a nn (probably just to annoy me)!
I think Melissa became quite popular a few years after I was born but I don't know that many others, except my step-mum - a complete coincedence!

CPtart · 18/02/2011 21:04

I'm Lindsay. Ok for a little girl but for someone fast approaching 40?? Too many connotations on the spelling as well.

BiscuitBob · 18/02/2011 21:16

I never liked my name when I was growing up, cos its too long. Also, people can never pronounce it properly (people call me Alexander), and people never seem to know if I'm a boy or a girl, especially when its shortened.

BiscuitBob · 18/02/2011 21:18

...although now I think it is actually a classy and pretty name :)

BlessedAssurance · 18/02/2011 22:02

tomato you are right, but not a lot of people can pronounce it the right way,

am loving a lot of these names,,

I'm a Kate and love it, would heartily recommend it :o

Blessed - Are you in Norway then? Funny you say that Noah isn't common there, it was number 14 in the Norwegian 2010 baby name statistics and my Norwegian friends both remarked on how common it was there when I named DS Noah in 2009 :)

BlessedAssurance · 18/02/2011 22:11

Really? then i am not using it, its just that amongst my friends and other people i know with kids, no child has it, thanks for letting me know, Noah is out,,Smile

Oh beloved KATE this name is a classic, i don't think its going anywhere anytime soon, unfortunately for me there is a lady who hates my mother and thats her name,,

Near enough Odelay. My nickname in rl is The Fish.

Raahh · 18/02/2011 22:17

I don't like my full name- Joanne- and am known as Jo to most people. It was VERY popular in 1971 when I was named, but that is not why i don't like it. i just dislike the way it sounds. (especially where i live in manchester, must be the accent).

My middle name is Elizabeth, which I LOVE. Is DD1's middle name too ( and the mil's, so that's useful!).

Phoenix · 18/02/2011 22:17

My ds2 is Noah. Ds1 is Lewis. Other boys names i like are Rhys (ds2 middle name), Finlay, Dominic, James (ds1 middle name), Joseph.

Girls - Amy, Morgan.

Phoenix · 18/02/2011 22:18

Oh and i'm Joanne i put that on further down the thread :)

Phoenix · 18/02/2011 22:20

Snap raahh :o

My middle name is Michelle.

washngo · 18/02/2011 22:25

Love my name now. Have done since I was about 14. Before that I wanted to be called Kelly because of Kelly in saved by the bell. But my name is Lydia.

MoonGirl1981 · 18/02/2011 23:11

My name is Titania, I love it.

Do spend a lot of time spelling it though, which gets on my nerves as it really is spelt exactly as it sounds.

I've also never met another one!

boosmummie · 18/02/2011 23:24

I loathe my name, Caitlin, and as there were so many Kates at my school I had to stick with it. Made sure it was Kate ever since then though! Always wanted to be called Emily when I was small and so DD1 got that, followed by Flossie, James and Isabella. Flossie is actually Jessica and we have no idea why she's flossie but has been since since she was 6 weeks old and she's now 16½, so guess that's it now!

I love my name :) But I really don't like to share it and get quite peevy when I come across anyone with the same name as me (I've never met anyone in RL, there are two or three vaguely famous ones and then I found a whole bunch on Facebook).

People struggle to spell and/or pronounce it but it is always commented on favourably.

So thanks for that dear parents!

teobaldo · 19/02/2011 07:45

Yes i do love my name, even if when growing up at some point I would have liked to have a more original one- I had five in my class, now in deciding what to name my daughter I would like to strike the balance finding a classic name, that is well known, easy to prononce and spell but not popular, as people I met with very original names all had problems growing into them... So not an any easy task !

SilveryMoon · 19/02/2011 08:07

I'm a Nicola and really like it. It suits me.
I hate all nicknames for it though and much prefer to be called Nicola.
Although I don't correct people and I will answer to Nic but I would never ever refer to myself by a NN.

I am not a fan of NN in general though, dp was always known by the shortening of his name until we got together, I have never called him by his shortening (his name is Ashley).
My son is Jacob and my dad keeps trying to call him Jake, I won't have that either.
I don't mind short names, my ds2 is a Luke I just don't like shortenings of nice names.

(Have really exposed myself here haven't I by listing my whole family!!)
