Miriam or Alice

We have a short list of Miriam (Mitzy for short ) or Alice. Thoughts welcome please.

I like Miriam but not the nn Mitzy so for that reason I prefer Alice.

I love Alice. Would have called either of my dds it but dh really doesn't like it for some reason.

Miriam but not Mitzy as a nn. Sounds like a cat.

How about Mim, Mimi or Miri as nn?

I love the name Miriam, for a good reason!

Miriam. We just gave our dd an arabic version, Maryam, as her middle name.

We could ditch the Mitzy nn and just see what she gets called. Would not like the nn Ally if we call her Alice, anyone know of this happening?

I love the name Alice, classic, timeless, feminine but strong - fab. Never known an Alice called Ally so think it should be easy to avoid.

I don't like Miriam much, think it's to do with a girl at school - sorry!

The only Ally/Alis I know are Alisons, not Alices

DD is Miriam, and I wanted to call her Mim. She ends up being called Miri if shorted.

I felt too uncomfortable with Mim in the end. Don't know why.

I love Alice, but I know 3 of them under 5, it seems to have become very popular. On that basis I'd go for Miriam.

Miriam, but, as others have said, not Mitzy. Miri or even Merry would be a nice nickname.

Both are nice names, I do like Alice too, but Miriam is, IMO, the better of the two.

I have an Alice, it is a lovely name. She doesn't get called any nn, except for Ali-Bongo from bingo-land by DH

Hate Mitzy for Miriam too twee and a bit daft sounding, much prefer Miri or merry.

Miriam is gorgeous. Would definitely use it for a girl except I have a SIL Merieme. Just please please don't force a NN. I find it too twee and vommitous when parents do this. Wait il she's born and a NN develops naturally, if at all.

Oh and Mitzy is shit. Why ruin a gorgeous name by calling her mitzy?

I really like both actually but Miriam has the edge. My vote is for Miriam then.

I'm with Spidookly - love Alice but dislike Miriam. I quite like Mitzy though but prefer Mimi.

Alice ..don't like Miriam at all

I loooove Miriam. It is pretty and unusual and biblical but everyone knows it and can say it. There are loads of good nicknames.

Alice is ok but sadly I knew two Alice's who both have learning difficultes so it is a name with associations now.
